There really was a monkey called Kafeero. He was a childhood pet adored by the entire family. It was my father, a real animal lover who introduced the little monkey to our home. There he joined a number of other animals. However, in his efforts to fit in, he indulged in behaviour that was unacceptable to some of the other adults. And one Sunday morning the family awoke to find that he was no more. Kafeero left a void in the hearts of many people, and I wrote this story to keep his memory alive. The creation of a conscious self, possessing a degree of autonomy and free will, is a pre-requisite for life to grow and evolve, as no life can exist without a centre of consciousness. One’s conscious self, within the confines of the allotted degree of autonomy, free will and endowed attributes, creates a sense of self within the physical body, enabling it to achieve its maximum potential according to its innate nature, ever-changing world view and its interactions with the empirical world. This is at the heart of the evolutionary process which created diversity from unity and the simplest to the most complex forms of life, with human beings, as they are now, at the pinnacle of this process. However, an individual’s conscious self, innate nature, and world view (ego-consciousness) remain divergent from that of the creator (God-consciousness). The goal of human beings is, therefore, to realise and perceive God-consciousness in action in the universe and to align and harmonise perfectly with it in one’s lifetime. This what Gurū Nānak, the founder of the Sikh religion, expresses in the first stanza of ‘Jap(u)’ in the Srī Gurū Graṅth Sāhib - the ‘living Gurū’ and the holy Sikh scripture. I have always been fascinated and amused by the way words sound and came to realise that puzzles could be created using pairs of words to make another word or phrase. For example “Goat” and “Appeases” is like “Go to pieces”; “Hissed” and “Oracle” is like “Historical”; “Totally” and “Clips” is like “Total eclipse” Each puzzle in this book has twenty clues. To answer them you have to pair up words from the 41 given words marked “All the answers”. One of these words is a rogue word and doesn’t figure in any of the answers to the clues. Each puzzle also has an example at the start whose “answer” words are from the word list but are not used together in answering the clues below it. As you will discover some of the answers are diabolical pairings and may well cause you to groan on realising the pun. That is all part of the enjoyment which I hope you will experience from solving the clues. Tick or cross off the words in the list as you use them but remember you might have used them incorrectly.
