ACC Art Books Yaozhou Wares From Museums and Art Institutes Around the World: Including Yaozhou Tribute Wares
Yaozhou ware is one of the finest Chinese celadons, made in north China over a period of 700 years, from the 7th to the 14th centuries. Their style developed and changed over time. In the Tang dynasty (618-906) black, brown, lead glazed and black-on-white painted ceramics were made. During the Five Dynasties period (907-960) a technical peak was achieved, and white-bodied wares with beautiful blue-green glazes appeared. During the Northern Song and Jin dynasties (906-1279) more olive-toned celadon glazes became the norm, their intricate decoration and lustrous surfaces supplying a unique aesthetic. At the end of the Jin dynasty the kilns declined and started to manufacture folk ware. Yaozhou Wares from Museums and Art Institutes Around the World gathers illustrations and descriptions of some of the finest Yaozhou wares in private and public collections around the globe. The account considers ceramics in sections, according to their form and decoration, and includes the finest-quality 'official wares' requisitioned for imperial use. Copious illustrations are augmented by a scholarly essay. Highlighting over 400 pieces of Yaozhou ware, the book contains 711 colour and 3 black-and-white illustrations from 56 major museums and art institutes, and will inspire collectors, students and anyone with a love for Chinese ceramics.

HarperCollins Publishers The Towers of Trebizond
"'Take my camel, dear," said my Aunt Dot, as she climbed down from this animal on her return to High Mass.' Thus starts, with one of the most famous opening lines in modern English literature, Rose Macaulay's classic novel, The Towers of Trebizond. As wise, civilised and wholly entertaining as it was when first published in 1956, the novel tells the beautifully absurd story of the inimitable Aunt Dot, her niece Laurie and Father Chantry-Pigg – and of their expedition together to Turkey to explore the possibility of establishing a High Anglican mission there. Each member of the party has an additional extra-curricular motivation for making the trip: Father Chantry-Pigg wishes to meet the fanatics in residence at the top of Mount Ararat; Aunt Dot is set on the emancipation of Turkish women through wider use of the bathing hat; Laurie's object ispure pleasure …

Pen & Sword Books Ltd The Real Coco Chanel
Coco Chanel lived her life as a romantic heroine. Fuelled by nineteenth century literature, she built a life that was part myth, part fact. She was the fashion designer everyone admired. The business woman whose fortunes were impossible to track. She was a performer and the lover of many high profile intellectuals. She was also believed, by many, to have been a Nazi spy. Her life was impacted heavily by history; the Second World War left an indelible trace. She was also greatly influenced by symbolism and literature, both huge sources of inspiration. This biography explores the course of her life, from her troubled and poverty stricken upbringing to the opening of her first hat shop. We discover Coco's passions and secrets, uncovering the myths and the facts of her life and examining how they match up, if at all. There are chapters focussing on the Chanel Maison and the creation of her iconic trademark, as well as her 'little black dress' and 'Chanel No 5'. Three exclusive interviews with individuals who have known Coco and researched her life also feature. Finally, the biography ends with a reflection on how the myth and legacy of Coco Chanel is represented today in pop culture.

Pen & Sword Books Ltd The Real Leonardo Da Vinci
Leonardo Da Vinci was left-handed. That's probably why he wrote backwards from right to left to avoid smudging ink on his hand as he made notes on his latest works and visionary discoveries. Words could only be read with the help of a mirror making it taxing for anyone but himself to quickly decode his handwriting. There are many theories exploring the reason why he kept using "mirror writing" in all his manuscripts. Some historians say that he was trying to make it more challenging for people to steal his ideas while others claim that it was a clever attempt to hide scientific findings from the intolerant Roman Catholic Church of the Renaissance. Whatever the logic behind this, the constant association with mirror writing and studies on the human body anatomy, made him one of the most enigmatic figures of his and then of our century. This biography investigates Leonardo and his different roles from anatomist to inventor, architect, painter, rumoured to be templar and scientific pioneer. Despite leaving several of his works incomplete, Leonardo managed to influence generations of artists and still today remains a highly regarded figure in both the artistic and scientific sector.
