Direct na de ontdekking van de fotografie door Louis Daguerre in 1839 stelde Francois Arago aan de Franse Akademie van Wetenschappen de 'faraonische beschaving' voor als een geknipt toepassingsgebied. De keuze van Egypte als eerste toepassingsgebied van de fotografie lag voor de hand: er was de uitdaging van het licht en de schoonheid van de gebouwen die halfverzonken in een uitheems landschap lagen. In vergelijking met de teken-, schilder- en graveerkunst was fotografie onvoorstelbaar precies en gedetailleerd. Eindelijk kon de Europese burgerij de oosterse monumenten in hun werkelijke staat bekijken, zonder subjectieve inbreng van de tekenaar. Weliswaar waren de procedes nog verre van volmaakt en stonden de fotografen machteloos tegenover technische incoherentie in hun reportages, maar dat bracht tegelijk met zich mee dat menige angstvallige opname onbedoeld een fascinerend en buitengewoon artistiek plaatje opleverde. Rond 1870 deed zich in de egyptefotografie een kentering voor: fotografen van Zuideuropese komaf vestigden zich ter plaatse om hun waar aan de westerse toeristen aan te prijzen. Dit had zijn weerslag op de onderwerpkeuze. De foto's gaven door hun gekunstelde mise-en-scene geen authentieke visie op land en bevolking maar waren afgestemd op toeristen die er hun eigen beeld van de Orient op nahielden. Deze foto's tekenen de relatie tussen de negentiende-eeuwse fotograaf en de inheemse bevolking: alles duidt op de onderwerping van de Egyptenaar.

"Encomiastica from the Pierpont Morgan Library" continues a collaborative effort to make available in edition and translation what remains unpublished of the Coptic literary manuscripts at the Pierpont Morgan Library. A first volume appeared under the title Homiletica from the Pierpont Morgan Library (CSCO 524 and 525). The introduction to the text volume includes sections on the texts, the manuscripts, and the language, as well as some addenda to Homiletica and to the Catalogue of Coptic Manuscripts in the Pierpont Morgan Library (Peeters 1993). In the introduction to the translation volume, S. Harvey discusses the cultural and historical setting of the five texts. The texts are attributed to Anastasius of Euchaita, Epiphanius of Salamis, Isaac of Antinoe, Severian of Gabala, and Theopempus of Antioch, but these attributions are probably spurious. The works may have been composed as late as the seventh or eight century AD in Coptic, with the thematic features being derived from earlier sources, possibly including Greek church fathers, and in certain instances perhaps even the authors to which they are attributed; but this matter awaits further investigation.

Amda-Seyons "chronicle" is in fact a detailed report of a year's (1332 AD) campaign of the king against a coalition of Muslim petty kingdoms in Ethiopia's southeast. It was most probably written by an eye witness of the events who furthermore disposed of some document material. Because of its pure language and elegant style as well as its masterly compostion as a true Christian hero's drama it must be ranged among the best products of Ge'ez medieval literature. Published for the first time more than hundred years ago it proved even in its deficient edition and rather tentative translation to be a principal source for the history of Ethiopia in the 14th century. Other sources for the same period are extremely rare, the historical tradition deriving from the Muslim counterpart included. The new critical edition made of all available mss. provides the long needed sound textual base for further research. The slightly commented translation, as well as the introduction, sums up the results of scholarly discussion so far; comparison is made to fragments of Muslim chronicles in Arabic and a few, partially unpublished documents in Ethiopic texts. The documentary value of the long list of Muslim contingents and territories in the coalition has been established: a real gazetteer of that region. The second - important from the historical and literary point of view - is that this text stands in a long tradition of Ethiopic historiography, near to hagiography (in the style of Lalibala's the Zagwe king's vita) where the manierated search for authentic and pure Ge'ez expression covers almost the Amharic reality of the time.

The homily "On the Succession of the Kings and the End of Times" attributed to bishop Methodius of Patara (died ca. 311) is one of the most influential non-biblical apocalyptic texts both in Eastern and in Western Christianity. Written about 692 in Iraq by a Syriac-speaking Christian, it was soon translated into Greek and Latin, and subsequently into many other languages in East and West. The present edition offers the first critical text based on all extant Syriac textual witnesses, including references to the forthcoming new edition of the oldest Greek and Latin recensions by W.J. Aerts and G.A.A. Kortekaas in the Subsidia of CSCO. The present volume also includes the facsimile edition of the text (difficult of access) in the Oriental manuscripts Mardin Orth. 368 and Mardin Orth. 891. The German translation is provided with a comprehensive apparatus of explanatory notes and preceded by and introductory essay discussing the historical, religious and literary aspects of this important text, which may be considered as one of the earliest Christian responses to the rise of Islam.

Methodologically, Gillis suggests that Christian thology be constructed not only with an awareness of, but also using the data of, other religions. Theologically, he defends the position of pluralism and investigates the implications of this for soteriology, christology and ethics. As practical theology, he offers suggestions for the conduct of interreligious dialogue on the local level. Chester Gillis is assistant professor theology at Georgetown University. He holds a Licentiate degree in Philosophy and the M.A. in Religious Studies from the Catholic University of Leuven. His Ph. D. in Theology is from the Divinity School of the University of Chicago. De Brieven van de Oisterwijkse begijn Maria van Hout zijn uniek in de Middelnederlandse letterkunde omdat we niet alleen verschillende van haar adressanten, maar ook haar relatie tot de Keulse kartuizerprior Kalckbrenner, die haar werk vertaalde en uitgaf, kennen. De kartuizers bewonderden haar apostolische en mystieke geschriften zozeer, dat ze haar met enige medezusters naar Keulen uitnodigden, opdat ze daar hun goede invloed konden doen gelden. Mede dankzij haar aandrang verzocht deze prior zijn confraters van andere kartuizerkloosters de jezuieten, die zich juist in Duitsland wilden vestigen, te steunen. De H. Canisius noemt haar niet voor niets "onze Moeder Maria"!

Dit boek bevat de vertaling van een dagboek, dat de Nederlandse schilder De Famars Testas (1834-1896) heeft bijgehouden tijdens een reis in 1868 door Egypte, Palestina en andere delen van de "Orient". De beschrijvingen geven ons een levendig beeld van het gebied. Het sluit aan bij een eerder dagboek van dezelfde schilder van een reis naar Egypte: Reisschetsen uit Egypte 1858-1860. Beide zijn uitstekend bewerkt door de conservator van de Egyptische afdeling van het Rijksmuseum voor Oudheden te Leiden, Dr. Raven. De illustraties, reprodukties van schilderijen van De Famars Testas en zijn reisgenoten, versterken het beeld dat door het reisverslag wordt opgeroepen. Ook voor hedendaagse toeristen is de informatie boeiend, omdat een vergelijking gemaakt kan worden met de huidige toestand in de bezochte landen.

Louis Janssens is Professor Emeritus of Moral Theology at the Catholic University of Leuven, Louvain (Belgium). He is known for the development of the personalistic approach to moral judgment, which permeated the documents of Vatican Council II. He made a vital contribution to the understanding of sexuality and marriage within the Christian-Catholic context. "Adaquately considered" is a major study of Janssens' moral methodolgy. Dolores L. Christie is a member of the Department of Religious Studies at Baldwin-Wallace College, Cleveland, Ohio (U.S.A.). She completed her doctoral studies at Duquesne University, where her study of Louis Janssens' contribution to the renewal of Roman Catholic Moral Theology began in earnest.
