Institute of Economic Affairs A Plea to Economists Who Favour Liberty: Assist the Everyman
Should economists remain as detached scholars, pursuing their research to the satisfaction of themselves and fellow academics? Or should they try to educate their fellow men and women in economic ideas, hoping to have an impact on economic policy? In this Occasional Paper, Professor Daniel B. Klein addresses these issues, concluding that if economists want to be influential in policy-making, they must be willing to communicate with the 'Everyman'. Scholasticism is valuable in encouraging high research standards, but it has been carried too far in the economics profession, to the detriment of research and teaching which are relevant to policy. Five well-known economists - John Flemming, Charles Goodhart, Israel Kirzner, Deirdre McCloskey and Gordon Tullock - then comment on Klein's paper.

Free Association Books Public and Professional Speaking: A Confident Approach for Women
Many women are afraid of speaking in public or professional situations. This book examines the reasons for this fear and the various forms it can take, and gives an account of the factors, often social, which dissuade so many women from speaking, such as the fear of being the centre of attention and of saying the wrong things. There is analysis and discussion of women's fear of public speaking, and the book suggests practical methods for combatting such fears. It gives advice as to how arguments and everyday communication can be handled more confidently and effectively, and suggests more effective means of everyday conversation and communication.

Monthly Review Press,U.S. Rising from the Ashes?: Labor in the Age of Global Capitalism
Big changes in the global economy and world politics have put new questions on the table for labour movements around the world. Can workers regain the initiative against the tidal wave of corporate downsizing and government cutbacks? Is labour rising from the ashes? Focusing upon recent developments in the United States, this volume sets these decisive questions about labour against a global backdrop, connecting and contrasting the new American scene to recent developments abroad - from Mexico to Asia, from Canada to Eastern Europe. It provides analysis of the key issues being debated by labour scholars and activists: the changing composition of the international working class; patterns of work under contemporary capitalism; the relationship of race and gender to class; the promise and limitations of recent eruptions of labour militancy; and the strategic options available to the labour movement in today's conditions.
