Perseguido y encarcelado por su militancia política de izquierda, pasó varios años exiliado en Cuba, Guatemala, Checoslovaquia y México. Vinculada con las propuestas del coloquialismo que durante los años sesenta surgieron en varios países latinoamericanos, su obra poética está atravesada por una constante experimentación, a menudo a partir de los recursos típicos de la narrativa, el periodismo y los discursos tradicionalmente considerados no poéticos. Usualmente cargados de humor e ironía y muchas veces sarcásticos, sus poemas reflexionan sobre la sociedad y asume un definido mensaje político. En 1956, 1958 y 1959 recibió el Premio Centroamericano de Poesía. En 1969, con Tabernas y otros lugares, ganó el premio Casa de las Américas. Murió asesinado cuando contaba cuarenta años.
