Tracing the progression of images of women's bodies through nearly two centuries of literature, Fasick analyzes selected novels from Samuel Richardson to D. H. Lawrence to construct a historical overview of class and gender relations as reflected and refracted in the pages of the English novel. Though recent discussion and women's roles in literature and culture has centered on women's sexuality as the defining factor in the female character, Fasick focuses instead on ways that writers have depicted women as possessing nurturing qualities that distinguish them from men. Rigid adherence to this idealization of femininity constructs a standard difficult for women to achieve. Held to the ideal, Fasick asserts, women appear grossly culpable rather than simply human. Fasick begins with an analysis of Samuel Richardson's novels that examines three linked themes: sensibility, maternity, and anorexia. She continues with a discussion of Frances Burney's treatment of the expressive female body. She then analyzes novels by Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Charlotte Bronte in light of Victorian attitudes toward women and food and toward female invalidism. In conclusion, she returns to Richardson, pairing his novel Pamela with Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover for an examination of cross-class romance and the resulting implications for class and gender. Throughout, references to conduct books and periodical literature of the time provide contexts that illuminate the primary texts. Fasick's insights will interest students of the novel, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century fiction, women's studies and gender studies, and class relations in literature.

Two predominant critical assumptions about Samuel Richardson—that he is a feminist and that his novels aim to exert a straightforward didactic influence on readers—are challenged by this comparative study of female exemplarity in Clarissa, Sir Charles Grandison, Evelina, and Les Liaisons dangereuses in a theoretically and historically informed context, in order to investigate the ideologically charged terraine of models and modeling in eighteenth-century epistolary fiction. The possibility of the coherent and imitable model, both of female virtue and of stable communication, is negated by the persistence of "parasites" within the narrative exchanges that attempt to create these ideals. The female subjectivity transacted by Clarissa's text-reader relation is imagined as a site not of ethical transformation but of crippling shame and self-reproach. Koehler's readings produce a trajectory in which Burney and Laclose, writing within thirty-five years of Clarissa's publication, reject Richardson's use of female exemplarity as a weapon.

Jehan Creton accompanied Richard II on his expedition to Ireland in 1399 and witnessed his capture by Henry Lancaster, who usurped the throne to reign as Henry IV. Creton's account is of crucial importance for historians of the period, as he contradicts the official version of events in the Parliamentary Roll. Until now, historians have had to rely on a 200-year-old edition by an antiquarian with no specialist knowledge of Middle French: the Rev. Webb's edition of 1824 has all the disadvantages of a publication of that era. Creton's other known writings – the two epistles and four ballades – are edited here and his debt to Valerius Maximus in the epistle to the duke of Burgundy is identified for the first time. A complete translation has been added, plus quality reproductions of the original miniatures which Creton specified as an integral part of his work.
