HENI Publishing Picabia Inside Out
In the 1950s, American painter Philip Pearlstein completed his MA thesis, ‘The Paintings of Francis Picabia 1908–1930’. When his research coincided with Picabia’s death in 1953, Pearlstein became the authority on the work of Picabia and his influence in European modernism that set the stage for modern art in America. Of course, it is impossible to discuss Picabia without also considering the work of Marcel Duchamp. At different intervals in his career, Pearlstein wrote three subsequent essays on Picabia for major arts journals: ‘The Symbolic Language of Francis Picabia’ for Arts magazine, 1956; ‘Hello & Goodbye, Francis Picabia’ for Art News, 1970, and ‘When the Dada Daddies Got Real; Or, How I Turned Picabia Inside Out’ for Brooklyn Rail, 2017. Pearlstein’s articles present a fascinating comparison between Picabia, Duchamp and Pearlstein himself. Picabia Inside Out brings together Pearlstein’s articles in full, published in an illustrated paperback book with a facsimile of the 1955 MA thesis presented as an historical document showing all the nuances of his typewriter. A foreword by Robert Storr highlights the broader art historical context and Pearlstein’s importance as a precursor to what became known as postmodernism.

Rowman & Littlefield To the People, Food Is Heaven: Stories Of Food And Life In A Changing China
In China, the world's next superpower, life is comfortable for the fortunate few. For others, it's a hand-to-mouth struggle for a full stomach, a place to live, wages for work done, and freedom to speak openly. In a place where few things are more important than food, "Have you eaten yet?" is another way of saying hello. After traversing the country and meeting its people, Ang shares her delicious experiences with us. You'll have lunch with some of the country's most enduring activists, savor meals with earthquake survivors, and get to know a house cleaner who makes the best fried chicken in all of Beijing. Ang bites into the gaping divide between rich and poor, urban and rural reform, intolerance for dissent, and the growing dissatisfaction with those in power. Workman Publishing The Book of Nice: A Nice Book About Nice Things for Nice People
Nice is the secret ingredient to a better life. It makes us happy. It may even be what makes us civilized—when we say thank you, shake hands, send flowers, we’re doing the nice things that bring people together.?A compulsive and chunky book for lovers of trivia, popular history, customs, and culture—and a perfect gift to say “you’re nice”—The Book of Nice is an entertaining, quirky compendium of those signs, traditions, and expressions that we so often take for granted, yet turn out to be quite fascinating. It’s about why we cover a yawn (originally to prevent evil spirits from entering our bodies, now to hide the impression that something’s boring us). About holiday traditions—it’s thanks to Guy Lombardo’s December 31 broadcast in 1929 that we now sing “Auld Lang Syne” on New Year’s Eve. About customary offerings—the wedding cake evolved out of the Roman use of wheat as a symbol of fertility (and it’s much tastier than bits of grain). And about those simple yet essential niceties—how Thomas Edison championed an obscure term, “hello” (if Alexander Graham Bell had gotten his way, we’d all be saying “ahoy”). Why not put a little nice in your day?

Troubador Publishing The Magazine Girls 1960s - 1980s
The Magazine Girls captures a flash-bulb moment in counter-culture in a time of raw excitement, great creativity, opportunity and sheer magical zeitgeist. This unique multi-narrative memoir presents a rare perspective on publishing just as the media youth market was set to boom. Through seven personal stories, it charts, from the 1960s and into the 1990s, the lives and times of young women who, as teenage school leavers, found themselves working on the top teen magazines of the day: Rave, Mirabelle, Valentine, Loving, Petticoat, and 19. Opportunities abounded in the 1960s and the girls were soon writing about and mixing with a new kind of aristocracy - the bands, the fashion designers, photographers, make-up artists and models. Famous names they interviewed included David Bowie, David Cassidy, Marc Bolan, Elton John, the Who and Bob Marley, amongst others. They were to mature into high-profile fashion and beauty editors, PRs, stylists, features and showbusiness writers, working on best-selling women’s magazines such as Woman’s Own, Woman, and Good Housekeeping, Hello! and national newspapers. The Magazine Girls strikes a chord, not only with those who lived through those extraordinary decades but also with younger generations of today who wish they’d been there.

The Experiment LLC Responsive Feeding: The Essential Handbook A Flexible, Stress-Free Approach to Nourishing Babies and Toddlers
Parents are tired of struggling with their child at mealtimes. It's a familiar scene: Parent offers a spoon, loaded with nutritious food; Baby turns their head away and starts crying. Enter responsive feeding. Recommended by the US Dept of Health and Human Services and UNICEF, responsive feeding is learning how to read your baby's communication cues and your toddler's often-very-strong preferences (hello two-year-olds!) rather than feeding them a predetermined amount.Think of responsive feeding as a dance. Because the parent is in-tune and present in the moment, they will connect and flow, making for a joyful experience!Using evidence-based strategies, feeding therapist Melanie Potock explains how to read your child's cues to ensure happy mealtimes with happy kids. This book is designed to answer the most common questions about feeding babies and toddlers up to age three. Now in Hymnswitch, Blythe takes up the themes of identity and the body once again, this time casting an eye backwards and forwards, visiting places of recovery and wrestling with the transition into one's own skin. Readers will find themselves holding their breath at the risk and beauty and difficulty of the balance Blythe strikes in the midst of ineffable complexity.Combining a stark, tensile precision with musicality that lulls and surprises, Blythe, a surreal engineer of language, has once again created an unusually memorable collection. Little, Brown & Company Confessions of a Happily Married Man: Finding God in the Messiness of Marriage
Confessions of a Happily Married Man is a husband's painfully honest account of his first ten years of marriage. It offers a window into the perspective of a man who went from "hello" to "I do" in nine months and then figured out how hard marriage could be. When Joshua Rogers thought back on the marriage books he had read of sermons about marriage he had heard, it occurred to him that he could only remember one thing about them: the stories. That's why this book is anchored by stories that other couples will relate to and can easily learn from. The stories are cringe-worthy, humorous, inspiring, heart-breaking and full of wisdom - but the author isn't telling the reader what to do with that wisdom. He's letting the reader learn along with him as he's gradually becoming more aware of his shortcomings and more grateful for his wife. Confessions of a Happily Married Man is full of hope, humour and grace, showing couples that they are not alone in the frequent fight to keep their marriages together. After reading, wives will sigh and husbands will smile at the author and his wife and conclude, "Someone else has been through the same challenges we have. If they can make it, we can too!"

Lexington Books Singing, Soldiering, and Sheet Music in America during the First World War
An advertisement in the sheet music of the song “Goodbye Broadway, Hello France” (1917) announces: “Music will help win the war!” This ad hits upon an American sentiment expressed not just in advertising, but heard from other sectors of society during the American engagement in the First World War. It was an idea both imagined and practiced, from military culture to sheet music writers, about the power of music to help create a strong military and national community in the face of the conflict; it appears straightforward. Nevertheless, the published sheet music, in addition to discourse about gender, soldiering and music, evince a more complex picture of society. This book presents a study of sheet music and military singing practices in America during the First World War that critically situates them in the social discourses, including issues of segregation and suffrage, and the historical context of the war. The transfer of musical styles between the civilian and military realm was fluid because so many men were enlisted from homes with the sheet music while they were also singing songs in their military training. Close musical analysis brings the meaningful musical and lyrical expressions of this time period to the forefront of our understanding of soldier and civilian music making at this time.

- - is a blank city. There’s a sick glow to the clouds, and it always seems to be raining here even when it isn’t. Only sad and wounded people live here anymore. They are homeless in their apartments. They are unemployed at their jobs. They are widows in their marriage beds and celibates in amours and loners with many friends because - - is a sad city, full of sad and lonely people. I can’t say very much about myself now, only that we have known each other before and for a very short, very slight while. We had a class together and I grew up down the block and our mothers say hello still from time to time in the aisles of a grocery store somewhere north of Tampa. Somewhere deep in Maryland. Somewhere down in Solano County. Somewhere out where the winds never seem to change and the days tick by like cars on a beltway. Things have not worked out for me in life as they may have for you. I have seen your visions of this world flickering on the outsides of my eyelids for a very long time and now and for many other reasons, I cannot stand to see them anymore.
