The decision to implement environmental protection options is a political one. These, and other political and social decisions affect the balance of the ecosystem and how the point of equilibrium desired is to be reached. This book develops a stochastic, temporal model of how political processes influence and are influenced by ecosystem processes and looks at how to find the most politically feasible plan for managing an at-risk ecosystem. Finding such a plan is accomplished by first fitting a mechanistic political and ecological model to a data set composed of observations on both political actions that impact an ecosystem and variables that describe the ecosystem. The parameters of this fitted model are perturbed just enough to cause human behaviour to change so that desired ecosystem states occur. This perturbed model gives the ecosystem management plan needed to reach desired ecosystem states. To construct such a set of interacting models, topics from political science, ecology, probability, and statistics are developed and explored. Pinchas Rutenberg was the man who electrified Palestine in more ways than one. A Russian revolutionary and an assassin who plotted the murder of Lenin and Trotsky, he escaped the Bolsheviks, finishing up at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. There he persuaded British leaders to grant him the concession to set up a hydro-electric plant on the Jordan River in Palestine. Described as a mixture of a whirl-wind and a steam-roller, he blustered his way past determined opposition in the British Parliament and the Zionists. His power plants were successful in providing electricity for virtually the whole of Palestine during the 1920s and ‘30s. It was this, more than much else, that allowed the agricultural and industrial development of a land that had been sorely neglected for generations. He went on to initiate Palestine Airways, the forerunner of EL Al, and was elected leader of the Jewish population of Palestine. In this position he was heavily involved in negotiations with the British Government and its Mandatory administration and spent much effort in trying to forge a peace deal with Arab leaders including King Abdullah of Jordan. He died in 1942, stipulating in his will that no fuss should be made of him after his death. He was to be buried amongst the workers, no eulogies were to be given and no streets, villages or towns were to be named after him. Perhaps it was this that led to the paucity of literature about him in English. This biography is an attempt to rectify this neglect of a remarkable historic figure.

The Holocaust as history ended seventy-five years ago, about the span of a full human life; the Holocaust as culture is very much of the present, its meanings and lessons still actively in formation. For twenty-five years, Jason Francisco has wrestled with the afterlife of the genocide, creating a large number of photoworks and essays, including extensive work with the Galicia Jewish Museum in Kraków, Poland. At the center of his work work has been his long-term project Alive and Destroyed: A Meditation on the Holocaust in Time, begun in 2010. With a large format camera and antique lenses, Jason Francisco has undertaken a series of deep journeys extending from Berlin in the west to Kharkov in the east, Riga in the north to Bucharest in the south—for the sake of images that might carry the complications of remembering and forgetting in the places where the events we collectively call the Holocaust occurred. His destinations included the notorious sites of the genocide, such as Auschwitz and the ghettos of Warsaw and Łódź, which often are taken to stand for the whole. And has made his way to hundreds of small, often remote concentrationary sites in Poland, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, Hungary and Slovakia—massacre sites in forests, fields, riverbanks and cemeteries, deportation routes, subcamps, labor camps, transit camps, short-term ghettoes, escape routes, hiding places, not to mention countless sites of erstwhile Jewish life and civilization, some intact, more in ruins, vastly more in states of nothingness. Walter Hilton (ca. 1343-1395) ist in England seit Jahrhunderten ein vielgelesener geistlicher Autor. Mit der Studie liegt erstmals eine deutschsprachige Monographie vor, die die Lëcken der ëberwiegend aus der Anglistik des angelsächsischen Sprachraums stammenden Hilton-Forschung aus theologischer Perspektive fëllt. Dazu wird nach einem ausfëhrlichen Forschungsëberblick Hiltons Leben und Werk umfassend vorgestellt und in den historischen Kontext eingeordnet. Der Hauptteil der Arbeit bietet eine Untersuchung der Theologie Hiltons. Die Studie wählt einen primär traditionsgeschichtlichen Ansatz, der ergänzt wird um mentalitäts-, kultur- und sozialgeschichtliche Perspektiven. Anhand einer Untersuchung des fër Hilton zentralen Begriffs der "Liebe (Gottesliebe, Nächstenliebe, Selbstliebe)" und der bei ihm damit eng verflochtenen Vorstellung von der Gottebenbildlichkeit/-ähnlichkeit des Menschen wird gezeigt, dass Hilton in der augustinisch-zisterziensischen Traditionslinie (Bernhard von Clairvaux, Wilhelm von St. Thierry, Richard von St. Viktor) steht. The United States is Israel's closest ally in the world. The fact is undeniable, and undeniably controversial, not least because it so often inspires conspiracy theorizing among those who refuse to believe that the special relationship serves America's strategic interests or places the United States on the side of Israel's enduring conflict with the Palestinians. Some point to the nefarious influence of a powerful "Israel lobby" within the halls of Congress. Others detect the hand of evangelical Protestants who fervently support Israel for their own theological reasons. The underlying assumption of all such accounts is that America's support for Israel must flow from a mixture of collusion, manipulation, and ideologically driven foolishness. The political culture of the United States, he argues, has been marked from the very beginning by a Christian theology that views the American nation as deeply implicated in the historical fate of biblical Israel. God's Country is the first book to tell the complete story of Christian Zionism in American political and religious thought from the Puritans to 9/11. It identifies three sources of American Christian support for a Jewish state: covenant, or the idea of an ongoing relationship between God and the Jewish people; prophecy, or biblical predictions of return to The Promised Land; and cultural affinity, based on shared values and similar institutions. Combining original research with insights from the work of historians of American religion, Goldman crafts a provocative narrative that chronicles Americans' attachment to the State of Israel.
