University of California Press 1910: The Emancipation of Dissonance
The year 1910 marks an astonishing, and largely unrecognized, juncture in Western history. In this perceptive interdisciplinary analysis, Thomas Harrison addresses the extraordinary intellectual achievement of the time. Focusing on the cultural climate of Middle Europe and paying particular attention to the life and work of Carlo Michelstaedter, he deftly portrays the reciprocal implications of different discourses - philosophy, literature, sociology, music, and painting. His beautifully balanced and deeply informed study provides a new, wider, and more ambitious definition of expressionism and shows the significance of this movement in shaping the artistic and intellectual mood of the age. "1910" probes the recurrent themes and obsessions in the work of intellectuals as diverse as Egon Schiele, Georg Trakl, Vasily Kandinsky, Georg Lukacs, Georg Simmel, Dino Campana, and Arnold Schoenberg. Together with Michelstaedter, who committed suicide in 1910 at the age of 23, these thinkers shared the essential concerns of expressionism: a sense of irresolvable conflict in human existence, the philosophical status of death, and a quest for the nature of human subjectivity. Expressionism, Harrison argues provocatively, was a last, desperate attempt by the intelligentsia to defend some of the most venerable assumptions of European culture. This ideological desperation, he claims, was more than a spiritual prelude to World War I: it was an unheeded, prophetic critique.

Kennedy in 1963 to the election of Donald Trump in 2017. Victor Arginzoniz has achieved world fame as a grill genius with his restaurant Etxebarri, located in the farming community of Axpe, a tiny village nestled beneath mountains an hour's drive southeast of Bilbao. When he bought the restaurant building in the centre of the village more than twenty-five years ago, he and his family rebuilt it entirely themselves. He is self-taught and has only ever worked in one kitchen - his own - where he designed and built his famous adjustable-height grills. With no other reference than the oldest culinary technique in the world - fire - he grills using utensils designed by himself, uses specific woods and has an obsessive search for the best product, Arginzoniz has revolutionized the way people roast meat, fish or vegetables. He cooks everything over a grill - even dessert - so everything has a unique taste to it. Michelin awarded Asador Etxebarri a Michelin star in 2010, describing the food as `an unadulterated pleasure for lovers of simply grilled and roasted dishes...' and he is ranked number 6 in the San Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants 2017. He rarely leaves the restaurant except to tend to his farm animals, which supply many of the raw ingredients for his tasting menu. This book describes the man, his kitchen and his recipes in words and stunning photography.

Anthony Mortimer, acclaimed for his versions of Petrarch and Michelangelo, provides a new verse translation complete with notes, critical comment and biographical material: following in the footsteps of Rossetti and Pound, he presents a Cavalcanti who speaks for his own time and to ours.

Quercus Publishing Valse Triste
When Michelangelo, a young autistic child, goes missing, Commissario Sergio Striggio is put in charge of the investigation. Searches turn up nothing, but there is an interesting connection with the mother's past: when she was a child, her twin brother also went missing, never to be found. However, Striggio is finding it difficult to concentrate on the case. He is waiting for his father, Pietro, to come and stay. The idea of the visit is torturing him. He fears having to reveal that he is gay - most of all he fears that his partner, Leo, will reveal his sexuality to his father. Pietro, however, has other matters on his mind: he has news of a devastating diagnosis to share with his son.And when his life with Leo unexpectedly collides with his investigation into Michelangelo's disappearance, it seems that in the complicated web of the small town of Bolzano, the truth behind the mystery cannot hide for long.Valse Triste is one of those rare novels in which the quality of the writing is matched by the pace of the narrative. Fois' language is precise and poetic, and the reader is kept guessing by twist after twist.Translated from the Italian by Richard DixonRichard Dixon is a former barrister, and a literary translator from Italian. His previous translations include works by Umberto Eco and Giacomo Leopardi, and poetry by Franco Buffoni and Eugenio De Signoribus. With the support of the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union
