C N Yang is a towering figure of science who has significantly extended human understanding of nature, headed one of the foremost research institutes in physics for three decades, and made great contributions to the advances of Chinese physics. This Festschrift in honor of Professor Yang on his centenary birthday consists of two volumes: Volume A consists of general essays concerning Professor Yang the person, as well as the authors' impressions and reminiscences of him, which are mainly (but not exclusively) in Chinese. While he was pretty good at science, he was very good at math. He went on to receive his BA in chemical engineering from Cornell University and his Doctorate of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As a graduate student at MIT, he was involved in teaching underprivileged high school dropouts, his goal: to make math and science interesting.Langer's research laboratory at MIT is the largest biomedical engineering lab in the world. He has authored more than 1300 papers and holds more than 1080 patents. His patents have been licensed or sublicensed to more than 250 companies. A selection of 53 key papers and 50 patents are included in this book.Langer has pioneered many new technologies, including controlled release system and is regarded as the founder of tissue engineering in the field of regenerative medicine. However, his success did not come easily. He struggled in the late 1970s and early 1980s because scientists, especially established scientists, did not believe in his research. To obtain his first patent, Langer scoured existing literature and found a paper published by five famous chemists and chemical engineers that said his results were surprising and went against conventional thinking. He managed to get the patent after the five researchers confirmed that they really wrote the paper.The introductory chapter of the book gives an account of Langer's struggles as well as triumphs as he pursued research in biotechnology and tissue engineering in an effort to 'make the world a better place and transform human healthcare.' He was one of the pioneers in the field. The volume contains 21 papers, from the highly influential 1985 paper on the Hopfield model (published together with Hanoch Gutfreund and Haim Sompolinsky), to his last (unpublished) manuscript. Volume IV continues the author's odyssey on l-D cellular automata as chronicled in Volumes I, II and III, by uncovering a novel quasi-ergodicity phenomenon involving orbits meandering among omega-limit orbits of complex (group 5) and hyper (group 6) Bernoulli rules. This discovery is embellished with analytical formulas characterizing the fractal properties of characteristic functions, as well as explicit formulas for generating colorful and pedagogically revealing isomorphic basin tree diagrams. Many new results were derived and proved by uncovering subtle symmetries endowed by various subsets of the 256 Boolean cubes. For the first time, rigorous analyses were used to identify 67, out off 256, local rules whose asymptotic behaviors consist of robust period-l orbits. The highlight of this continuing odyssey is the discovery of an isolated period-3240 Isle of Eden hidden among the dense omega-limit orbits of Wolfram's remarkable “random number generating” rule 30. This is the largest gem known to-date and readers are challenged to uncover even larger ones.
