In The Perfect Bath, Barbara Sallick who with her now-legendary company Waterworks brought the American bathroom out of the dark ages and reinvented it as a stylish, nurturing environment suited to a modern way of life showed her readers, step by step, how to transform a once-utilitarian afterthought of a room into the most personal, indeed special, space in the home. Rizzoli International Publications Emilio Ambasz: Curating a New Nature
Famously labelled the father, poet, and prophet of green architecture and a vocal proponent of the idea that any project in architecture or design must present new or better ways of living or be deemed immoral, Emilio Ambasz is an award-winning architect, industrial designer, and protean maker of forms. He has invented highly efficient engines, modular furniture, streetlamps, flexible pens, expandable suitcases, ergonomic door handles, wrist-computers, dental hygiene systems, and 3D posters. He created the Vertebra chair, the first ever automatic, ergonomic chair in the world, now part of the permanent collections at MoMA and The Met in New York. In architecture he has long been a pioneer, and has retained a belief in the environment, or rather the larger ecology, as fundamental in viewing the world: as Professor Bergdoll notes of Ambasz in his introduction, his philosophy of green over gray may often have fallen on deaf ears at the height of Postmodernism, but it today seems profoundly relevant. And it is in the context of today that the book considers the work of Emilio Ambasz and its three main areas of concentration architecture, industrial design, curating with an aim of shining a light on the interdisciplinary nature of the work as a whole. Featuring built and manufactured designs that have achieved iconic fame and challenged others to approach new ways of reconciling architecture and nature notably the Prefectural Hall at Fukuoka, Japan, and the conservatory buildings of the San Antonio Botanical Garden, in addition to his own unique house outside Seville in Spain the book also considers Ambasz s work as curator at MoMA and his ongoing influence and legacy.

Rizzoli International Publications Hebru Brantley
Straddling the worlds of fine art, street art and hip-hop, name-dropped on many a rap song, and collected by the likes of Jay-Z and LeBron James, Hebru is a painter, sculptor and designer. He first gained attention as a graffiti artist, tagging walls with colourful depictions of Flyboy a child donning aviator goggles all over the Windy City. Fast-forward to 2021 and his creations, profoundly influenced by Disney and Japanese Super-Flat, are now in museums, as well as in branded goods for A Bathing Ape, Billionaire Boys Club, Adidas Originals, KITH, Neighborhood and a host of other sought-after labels. At the heart of Hebru s work is restoring innocence to the depiction of black youth, often forced into adulthood before their time in the eyes of the law and popular media. Upbeat and life-affirming, Brantley s work not only attempts to normalize images of black children at play, but in his creation of black superheroes, even suggests an entirely new mythology in a cultural landscape often devoid of positive examples. This book will feature the breadth of Hebru s work so far, and is the first monograph on his work. Set out in two parts, this work will examine both the fine art and applied art nature of his work, with both his paintings and his streetwear collaborations receiving pride of place in the design of the book by prominent graphic designer Oliver Munday, currently the art director of The Atlantic Monthly.

Rizzoli International Publications David Reed
Since the outset of his career, David Reed s central preoccupation has been to challenge and reinvent how to make a painting. Consistently, his paintings present a compelling tension between the gestural and the impersonal; in recent times this has been characterized by fluid, torquing, extended marks that reveal the viscosity of paint and the speed of colour and light in a flattened manner that looks photographic or filmic. David Reed documents the artist s 2020 exhibition of new work at Gagosian in New York, presenting 15 outsize paintings that, in many cases, were over a decade in the making. The plates are punctuated by striking details of several works. The artist s working drawings, which he has long made to document the many stages of a painting s creation, are illustrated throughout the plate section, offering insights into his varied sources and complex processes. A new essay by art historian Richard Shiff examines the emotional tenor of Reed s paintings.

Rizzoli International Publications Richard Hambleton : Godfather of Street Art
Richard Hambleton (1954 2017) was a Canadian artist known for his pioneering street art. He was a surviving member of a group that emerged from the New York City art scene during the booming art market of the 1980s, which also included his close friends Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. As a conceptual artist, Hambleton s early work instal-lations titled Image Mass Murder from 1976 1979 were secretly placed onto streets in over 15 cities, depicting chalk-body outlines and blood-splattered crime scenes of what appeared to be victims. This theme of a prevailing violence, fear, and morbid curiosity elicited surprise and anxiety from its unsuspecting viewers. In the early 1980s, Hambleton created his most iconic Shadow Man works artfully splattered ominous shadowy figures on unexpected street corners, walls, and alleys that startled viewers into a visceral awareness that the city was still a dangerous place. This book features over 200 images including his early Shadow Man canvas paintings, as well as photographs of his in situ street work, a selection of his Marlboro rodeo horse silhouettes, and his Beautiful Paintings series of landscapes and seascapes, alongside other works on paper; behind-the-scenes studio shots; personal, unseen photographs of the artist; and inspirational imagery. Rizzoli International Publications François Berthoud: Fashion, Fetish and Fantasies
Francois Berthoud is known for his painstakingly produced and meticulously arranged linocuts and his expressive drip paintings and elegant computer graphics have graced the face of countless magazines and advertising campaigns for the world s most discerning and sought-after fashion brands including Yves-St-Laurent, Bulgari, Chanel, Givenchy, Sonia Rykiel, and Prada. His work presents the conceptual aspect of fashion, maintaining a strict line between the edge of eroticism which he claims to be all important. Emerging as a leading fashion illustrator and art director in the 80s, Berthoud s distinct style was championed by the legendary Anna Piaggi early on in her avant-garde publication Vanity that was published by Conde Nast. She hailed him by saying that while Francois illustrates fashion in an apparently formal and decorative way, in reality he analyses his subject in depth and with an elegant sense of detachment before recreating it in his atelier-laboratory . He experiences fashion with a sharp sense of irony and a visual culture rooted in conceptual art. But his style is totally now! Berthoud has a reputation for romantic fashion illustration and for erotica (he was the illustrator for Betony Vernon s The Boudoir Bible) and where the two often overlap. Featuring essays by Chris Dercon and Daniele Barbieri, the book concludes with a conversation with Franc?ois Berthoud transcribed by Christian Ka?mmerling.

Rizzoli International Publications The Well-Loved House: Creating Homes with Color, Comfort, and Drama
Ashley Whittaker s work is distinctively classic and sophisticated, but also inviting and warm. Dubbed a neo-traditionalist, she fearlessly marries adventurous colours and patterns in rooms yet still manages to retain a sense of elegance and restraint. Rizzoli International Publications Sawyer / Berson: Houses and Landscapes
The first book from Sawyer | Berson illustrates the award-winning firm s quintessential pairings of modernism and classicism in seaside houses, metropolitan residences, and spectacular garden retreats. Treating architecture, landscape, and interior design as complementary endeavors, Brian Sawyer and John Berson have been ahead of their time and influential in the world of design since the founding of their eponymous partnership in 1999. Sawyer|Berson s prodigious use of traditional and modern vocabularies has gained the firm widespread recognition and many notable clients. Meticulous attention to detail and versatility combine to create a wide variety of projects. In the Hamptons, a modernist house of stone and glass lets in the sun and sea views while secluded by the dunes and drifts of native grasses. Another residence is built according to the pinwheel floor plans of early twentieth-century houses by Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright to accommodate four master suites around a central common area with plenty of space for entertaining and individual relaxation. Yet another project, equally arresting, is a Colonial Revival cedar-shingled house and seaside landscape built for multiple generations. Whether restoring a historic Georgian Revival town house in Manhattan, designing a modernist residence in the country, or planning a garden by the ocean, the practice embraces traditional and contemporary styles with equal distinction.

Rizzoli International Publications A Soldier on the Southern Front: The Classic Italian Memoir of World War 1
Taking its place alongside works by Ernst Junger, Robert Graves, and Erich Maria Remarque, Emilio Lussu's memoir is one of the most affecting accounts to come out of the First World War. A classic in Italy but virtually unknown in the English-speaking world, it reveals, in spare and detached prose, the almost farcical side of the war as seen by a Sardinian officer fighting the Austrian army on the Asiago plateau in northeastern Italy, the front so poignantly evoked by Ernest Hemingway in A Farewell to Arms. For Lussu, June 1916 to July 1917 was a year of continuous assaults on impregnable trenches, absurd missions concocted by commanders full of patriotic rhetoric and vanity but lacking in tactical skill, and episodes often tragic and sometimes grotesque, where the incompetence of his own side was as dangerous as the attacked waged by the enemy. A rare firsthand account of the Italian front, Lussu's memoir succeeds in staging a fierce indictment of the futility of war in a dry, often ironic style that sets his tale wholly apart from the Western Front of Remarque, and adds an astonishingly modern voice to the literature of the Great War.

Rizzoli International Publications Knole: A Private View of One of Britain's Great Houses
Sumptuous photographs by designer Ashley Hicks (who recently photographed the interiors of Buckingham Palace) capture the smouldering spirit of the place: from the state rooms, which house possibly the finest collection of royal Stuart furniture in the world, to the private apartments and gardens, to the behind-the-scenes labyrinth of cellars and attics. Knole provides a window onto English history. The characters who people the pages of the book the grave Elizabethan statesman, the good-for-nothing gadabout at the seedy Court of King James I, the dashing Cavalier, the Restoration rake, the 3rd Duke, that magnificent and melancholy representative of the ancien regime, the whiskery and dark-hearted Mortimer who caused three nights of rioting in 1884 by closing the park to visitors are all representative of their age (members of a family described by Vita Sackville-West as a race too prodigal, too amorous, too weak, too indolent, and too melancholy : in short, a rotten lot, and nearly all stark staring mad. Of course, Vita s torn legacy with the property prompted her dear friend Virginia Woolf to pen Orlando, furthering the place s fame and glamorous lustre. Similarly, the architectural and decorative features of the house, so splendidly revealed by Ashley s photographs, illustrate the different tastes of successive ages, from Thomas Sackville s seventeenth-century makeover of a ramshackle medieval mansion to an early twentieth-century suite of rooms designed in the Bohemian style. Knole has never been illuminated in this way before.

Rizzoli International Publications Heated Words: Searching for a Mysterious Typeface
As more than 300 richly layered illustrations in the book reveal, this particular typeface bold, neo-Gothic, and imposing decorates the fabric of the most influential music and fashion subcultures of the last half-century. Having evolved from embellished military flight jackets and sports uniform lettering in the early part of the twentieth century, the typeface appears on the denim vests of street gangs, the t-shirts of B-Boys in the 1970s, and the lo-fi DIY outfits of punk kids through the 1980s. Since its heyday as the Helvetica of the hip-hop generation, the font is once again an inescapable element of referential contemporary street style. Creatively designed with images on top of images to reference the layering process of cultural appropriation, and with contributions from insightful voices in the fields of music, fashion, and typography including Andy Cruz and Jonathan Hoefler this book is a celebration of the ingenuity and irreverence of street style. A must-have reference for designers and students of fashion and typography.
