Moreover, media attention has rapidly increased in recent years, which reinforces the effect of temporary use even more. Then it is very easy for me, and I can write very, very fast. It is almost like copying. But of course sometimes I push myself; I read myself into a frenzy of poetry, reading Chinese poets of the eighth and ninth century, reading old Icelandic poetry, reading some of the finest German poets like Hölderlin. All of this has absolutely nothing to do with the idea of my film, but I work myself up into this kind of frenzy of high-caliber language and concepts and beauty.And then sometimes I push myself by playing music, for example, a piano concerto by Beethoven, and I play it and write furiously. Alternativenergien, das ist ein Begriff und wohl auch ein Schlagwort unserer Zeit. In der Tat: Die Zukunft der Menschheit hängt davon ab, ob und wie frühzeitig sie sich um die damit zusammenhängenden Fragen kümmert, wenn sie nicht einen Kollaps unserer hochkomplizierten Welt riskieren will. Gerade die rege­ nerativen Energieträger, wie Sonnen-, Meeres- und Windenergie sowie Biomasse­ nutzung, könnten das vermeiden helfen. Das vorliegende Buch versteht sich als Beitrag zu einer solchen Energie­ diskussion. Es ist aus einer gründlichen Überarbeitung eines Seminars an der Univer­ sität Tübingen über das Thema der Alternativenergien hervorgegangen. W. Kremers hat sich dieser umfangreichen Arbeit unterzogen, wobei er aus der Fülle der Ideen und Realsierungen diejenigen Energieformen auswählte, denen man eine gewisse Zukunft vorhersagen darf. Neben den physikalisch-technischen Projekten kommt den Verfahren, aus Biomasse Energie zu gewinnen, immer mehr Bedeutung zu. Eine abgerundete Darstellung zu diesem Thema stammt von J. Thiele. Die Konzeption des Buches wurde so aufgefaßt, daß es sich in der Mitte zwischen den zahlreichen und ausführlichen Einzeldarstellungen zu bestimmten Themen und den undifferenzierten Gesamtdarstellungen bewegt. Es soll insbeson­ dere den Studenten der Naturwissenschaften einen Überblick über den gegenwär­ tigen Stand der Energiediskussion ermöglichen, aber auch Lehrern und interessier­ ten Nichtfachleuten einen Einblick in die vielfältigen Möglichkeiten gewähren. Dementsprechend wurden jedem Kapitel eine kleine Einführung in die Grundlagen vorangestellt und danach die technischen Realisierungen besprochen. Minima Philologica brings together two essays by Werner Hamacher that are meant to revitalize philology as a practice beyond its restriction to the restoration of linguistic data and their meanings. In these two texts, “95 Theses on Philology” and “For—Philology,” Hamacher propounds a notion of generalized philology that is equivalent to the real production of linguistic utterances, and indeed utterances not limited to predicative or even discursive statements. Philology, in speaking for language where no clear and distinct language is given, exhibits and exposes the structure of language in general. The first text, “95 Theses on Philology,” challenges academic philology as well as other disciplines across the humanities and sciences that “use” language, assuming it to be a given entity and not an event. The theses develop what Hamacher calls the “idea of philology” by describing the constitution of its objects, its relation to knowledge, its suspension of consciousness, and its freedom for what remains always still to be said. In “For—Philology,” both speaking and writing, Hamacher argues, follow, discursively and non-discursively, the desire for language. Desire—philía—is the insatiable affect that drives the movement between utterances toward the next and the one after that. Desiring language—logos—means to respond to an alien utterance that precedes you, ignorant about where the path will lead, accepting loss and uncertainty, thinking in and through language and the lack of it, exceeding, returning, responding to others, cutting into and off what is to be said. In arguing this, Hamacher responds, directly or obliquely, to other philological thinkers such as Plato and Schlegel, Nietzsche, Benjamin, and Heidegger, as well as to poets such as Rene Char, Francis Ponge, Paul Celan, and Friedrich Holderlin. Taken together, the essays of Minima Philologica constitute a manifesto for a new understanding of linguistic existence that breaks new ways of attending to language and those who live by it.

Some of the leading scientists in the field of hypertension accepted an invi- tation to actively participate in an international symposium on primary hypertension. Scientists from 13 countries - from western, southern, and eastern Europe, Australia, and the United States - were present. The meeting was held in Cologne in March 1985. After previous meetings and workshops at Titisee in the Black Forest and several symposia on the renin- angiotensin-aldosterone system here in Cologne, this symposium on prima- ry hypertension was organized in order to induce and to stimulate critical discussion on the basic pathogenetic mechanisms involved and the recently established therapeutic implications. Numerous studies have been based on the concept that the elevation in blood pressure is mediated by several vasopressor substances. For this reason the renin-angiotensin system has been considered to be the essential endocrine mechanism involved in developing and sustaining arterial hyper- tension. Other vasopressor factors, such as catecholamines, vasopressin, and serotonin, have been studied extensively and were assumed to play additional parts in blood pressure regulation. However, several other ap- proaches have been initiated in recent years.

When Prince-Bishop Johann Konrad von Gemmingen (1593/95–1612) undertook a radical renovation of the Willibaldsburg Castle, overlooking the Altmühl River in Eichstätt, Bavaria, he also created a surrounding palatial pleasure garden of magnificence and grandeur. To preserve the garden for future generations – and provide an ‘evergreen’ record of its contents, compiling plants from all four seasons and presenting them in that order – he commissioned the garden’s director, Nuremberg apothecary Basilius Besler (1561–1629), and a team of engravers to immortalize its treasures in print.The resulting Hortus Eystettensis, published in Nuremberg in 1613 and containing 367 hand-colored plates and detailed descriptions, was a work of meticulous execution and spectacular diversity, and remarkably expensive for its time. As the garden contained a variety of plants imported from exotic locales, the three volumes exhibited a remarkable range, covering a total of 90 families and 340 genera. Due to the decorative, stylized execution of these illustrations, which began to see plants in aesthetic, rather than merely practical or medicinal terms, the book is seen as a milestone in the art of botanical illustration. While published before a time of standardized classification systems, it was nonetheless later described by Carl Linnaeus as an “incomparable work”.Besler’s catalog long outlived the gardens, which were destroyed in 1634 by invading Swedish troops during the Thirty Years’ War. However, a lengthy redevelopment project at the historic site has culminated in the opening of the modern Bastion Garden in 1998, containing many of the plants shown in the Hortus Eystettensis.Offering high-quality reproductions of these arresting illustrations, based on the copy of the Hortus Eystettensis at the University Library of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, this facsimile edition is accompanied by detailed plate descriptions of each plant’s botanical, pharmaceutical, and symbolic significance and an appendix of further essays which place the garden and the book in their historical contexts.This edition presents a valuable piece of botanical literature which, on the rare occasions where a copy appears on the market, can fetch prices of over $1,000,000 at auction.
