TFM Publishing Ltd 50 Years of the Historic Sports Car Club
This is the story of the Historic Sports Car Club. Over a period of 50 years, the Club grew from the germ of an idea to become Britain's leading race organising Club for cars from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. The Club's strapline is 'pure historic racing'. This unique book, illustrated with over 500 photographs, tells the story of half a century of growth for historic racing in Great Britain. It is a story of ups and downs, of triumph and tragedy. From humble beginnings, the early years were faltering before the Club moved into race organisation in the early 1980s. There were times of financial trauma and upheaval and the Club came close to bankruptcy. However, the last two decades have been spectacularly successful. The race programme has grown, the membership has hit record levels and the portfolio of championships has doubled. Allied to that success, the Club's finances have improved beyond all recognition and its standing in British motor sport has scaled new heights. This is the story of those 50 years: but it is also the story of the people behind the Club, people who cared enough about historic motor racing to play a role in building the Historic Sports Car Club.

TFM Publishing Ltd Schein's Common Sense Prevention and Management of Surgical Complications: For surgeons, residents, lawyers, and even those who never have any complications
The enthusiastic feedback received from readers of the international best-seller "Schein's Common Sense Emergency Abdominal Surgery" inspired the editors to do a similar book dedicated to surgical complications: practical, non-formal, internationally relevant (in all types of practice and levels of hospitals) -- and definitely not politically correct: what is considered taboo by others is not taboo for us; here we discuss everything! As in the editors' previous book, the use of references is restricted to the absolute minimum, and citing figures and percentages is avoided as much as possible. The chapters in this book are the opinion of experts -- each contributor has a vast personal knowledge and clinical experience in the field he is writing about. This book will help all surgeons (and their patients), avoid the misery of complications, and will provide advice on the management of those that are unavoidable. Complications and death are an integral component of surgery. Surgeons have to look death in the eyes, try to prevent it and vanquish it -- this is what this book is all about.

TFM Publishing Ltd Evidence-based Management of Diabetes
The clinical management of patients with diabetes is rapidly evolving. This book provides a succinct summary of a range of topics, including areas where there is already well developed evidence for a particular treatment, but also those areas where the evidence is perhaps doubtful or there is some associated controversy or ambiguity. Where possible throughout the book treatment recommendations are given based on the available evidence and practice guidelines. The book also highlights the gaps in evidence where further research is needed. In the practice of diabetes care, there are many issues influencing practitioners currently. This book addresses many of the most pertinent issues concerning delivery of diabetes care such as: Is diabetes preventable in high-risk individuals? Once diabetes has developed what are the goals of treatment and how aggressive should treatment be whilst avoiding adverse effects? What is the role of treating glycaemia in reducing macrovascular disease? Who to screen, how to screen and who to treat for coronary artery disease? Who and how to treat hyperglycaemia in acute coronary syndromes? Has there been any progress in the management of gestational diabetes? Is there an evidence base for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes with oral hypoglycaemic agents? The authors are internationally renowned experts in the field of diabetes care who successfully and succinctly present state-of-the-art reviews based on the medical evidence designed to help the clinician be as best informed as possible in the care of patients with diabetes.

TFM Publishing Ltd Evidence for Neurosurgery
Neurosurgery represents one of the most specialised arenas in modern medicine. Today, more than ever, patients with neurological disorders seek opinions from a variety of specialists and are often treated by teams of physicians. While consensus is often reached within institutions, regional variation is found between institutions. The lack of high quality clinical evidence contributes to this problem. This textbook aims to examine some of the most controversial areas of neurological surgery by applying the current evidence to illuminate our understanding of the pathophysiology of each disease and the outcomes from surgical and non-surgical treatments. Today's neurosurgeon must be able to apply current evidence in the clinic to determine, for example: Which aneurysm should be treated with endovascular or open vascular techniques? Which degenerative lumbar spine should be fused, decompressed, or both and which spine's deformity should be corrected and to what extent? Whether an acoustic neuroma should be treated, followed, removed, or irradiated? This is a textbook that will challenge current dogmas in many instances, provide an organised framework for understanding where current evidence can be applied clinically, and illustrate where gaps in the evidence exist and how these deficiencies may be filled in the future. In the first chapter, "Clinical Evidence", the reader will gain an understanding of the levels of clinical evidence and will learn what types of study designs are appropriate and in which situations. The textbook is then divided into six sections: Spine, Vascular, Tumour, Paediatrics, Functional, and Trauma. Each section's editors have provided a brief synopsis of the specific challenges within each field followed by chapters that provide the current evidence in areas where clinical uncertainty lies.

TFM Publishing Ltd Evidence-based Management of Hypertension
The treatment of hypertension is now evolving into a decision-making process of ever greater complexity. Not only has the range of drugs available increased but so too has our knowledge of the diversity of individual patients' responsiveness to therapy, and the need to tailor their treatment with reference to a wide variety of additional factors. In order to provide effective patient care, the clinician needs to be aware of all the options available, but also of the evidence supporting their use and the extent to which that evidence justifies the choices made. In this volume, leading authorities in their fields draw on the available evidence to provide answers to a series of key clinical questions facing the clinician treating hypertension. These include questions of definition; who do we treat, and when? Should we treat pre-hypertension? How does the choice of therapy change in the presence of comorbidities such as obesity, ischemic heart disease, left ventricular hypertrophy, diabetes or cerebrovascular disease? What is the optimal treatment of women in pregnancy? The book provides answers to these and many other questions, as the authors present an expert analysis of the available evidence and offer authoritative recommendations for treatment planning. In each chapter, tables highlight evidence from a variety of sources, and every chapter concludes with a series of key practice points that present a summary of evidence-based recommendations for best practice, graded according to the quality of that evidence. For any clinician concerned with the care of the hypertensive patient, this volume will be a valuable aid to treatment planning and long term management.

TFM Publishing Ltd Epilepsy Simplified
Simplicity is an under-rated virtue; where information is vital, it should be possible to put it across in a way that is easy to understand and remember. Epilepsy is a common condition which has been recognised since the beginning of history, and as the opportunities for diagnosis and effective treatment have increased, it becomes more important that health professionals have a working knowledge of how epilepsy interacts with their own area of expertise. The interactions between all aspects of medicine and epilepsy should motivate all to do their best to learn about management of all stages the disease, from first seizure through to status epilepticus. This is recognition that providing a diagnosis of epilepsy has more than medical implications, and in fact it is safe to say that there are few aspects of modern life that will remain untouched by such a diagnosis and consequent treatment. At some point, discussions will be required around the issues of fertility, job prospects, driving issues, family safety, childcare, travel, life insurance, diet, and sports participation. This book, has been produced by Dr Becky O'Dwyer and Dr John Paul Leach, recognised experts in epilepsy from opposite sides of the Atlantic. They have tried to make the key concepts of epilepsy's cause, prognosis and treatment accessible to all in this compact format, providing information for clinicians and permitting informed choice for patients and their families.

TFM Publishing Ltd Clinical Surgery Made Easy: A companion to problem-based learning
Creating a differential diagnosis and rationalising a treatment plan is a challenging task for medical students and young doctors at the early stage of their training. This process will also expose deficiencies in core knowledge and problems in applying certain components of their knowledge to varied clinical situations. Guided by experienced teachers, students and doctors in training best learn these skills at the bedside. Patients do not always present with classic textbook descriptions and clinical scenarios can often be varied. During the limited period of clinical training allocated in the surgical curriculum, students may not receive sufficient exposure to an evidence-based approach and decision making in clinical surgery. There is evidence that problem-based learning (PBL) stimulates critical thinking; frequent patient encounters, focused reading, commitment and enthusiasm to acquire the essential core knowledge are all necessary prerequisites in achieving the best outcome from problem-based learning. This book addresses the essentials; common clinical encounters, a clinical decision-making approach, care pathways, the essential core knowledge of clinical anatomy, pathophysiology pertinent to the topic and a concise discussion of management pathways based on the most up-to-date guidelines (e.g. NICE, SIGN, BASO, BSG) are presented in a student friendly style which makes it easier to retain facts. Frequently asked questions at examinations are emphasised during the discussion. This approach will guide and stimulate the reader to recognise, recall and apply the relevant facts to given clinical situations. Also included are self-assessment questions: EMQs (Extended Matching Questions), SBAs (Single Best Answers) and True/False types with relevant explanatory notes. The questions are created to reinforce the concepts and to try to inspire the student's thirst for knowledge. The book is primarily aimed at undergraduates and junior doctors.

TFM Publishing Ltd Evidence for Vascular Surgery: 2nd Edition
The first edition published in 1999, was described as a "longed for addition to the literature", and as a text that "cannot be compared with any other book on vascular surgery" (Lancet 2000; 355: 1918). At the time it was different; a book to help busy clinicians sift through surgical research and use it to make sensible decisions for their clinical practice. The challenge for this second edition is to produce something better still. The new edition is larger and more comprehensive, thanks to valuable suggestions from colleagues and reviewers. The text is as accessible as possible, with short chapters, recommendations for management, comprehensive referencing and full colour illustration. It belongs on the shelf, or in the briefcase of everyone who has to treat patients with vascular disease.

TFM Publishing Ltd Dead Medics’ Society
David Gray is a disillusioned surgeon approaching retirement. One night, on the way home from an emergency aneurysm repair, he has a car crash and meets the spirit of the patient he's just operated on -- a man called Alf Angel. Alf, a simple and straightforward character, becomes Gray's guardian and travelling companion on a fantastic journey through time. They visit scenes from Gray's formative years as a young medic, before moving further back in time to learn something of the early trials and tribulations of scientific surgery. Through it all, Gray earnestly seeks the worth of his calling as a doctor and surgeon and ultimately, the nature and meaning of life itself. This is a short novella told in a tongue-in-cheek style using a mixture of amusing whimsy and, at times, profound insight into the minds of men who wield scalpels for a living. Although this short tale is clearly fiction, the historical figures and operations depicted are real, though the characterisation is down to poetic license. Read it and wonder.

The Royal College of Anaesthetists has introduced Constructed Response Questions (CRQs) as an innovative way of testing trainees, in the fields of anaesthesia and intensive care medicine, in their final FRCA examinations from September 2019. This book will appeal to all doctors, including those rotating through surgical and emergency medicine specialities, and those clinicians approaching professional examinations worldwide. Dr. Moshe Schein has previously compiled two books of surgical aphorisms and quotations the first book Aphorisms & Quotations for the Surgeon, with its 1500 quotations, and the slimmer A Companion to Aphorisms & Quotations for the Surgeon. Surgeons use the books to decorate their lectures or manuscripts with relevant smart or entertaining entries; some like to quote from the books during teaching rounds or conferences; many simply enjoy them for their collective and eternal surgical wisdom and wit. Now, as Moshe is drifting towards retirement, here is the last in the trilogy of this international bestselling series The Little Book of Aphorisms & Quotations for the Surgeon. The quotes collected within this little book have been gathered since the publication of the last two books in the series. As before, these aphorisms and quotations are retrieved from multiple sources: journals, books, lectures and, more and more, gathered from surgical friends around the world. The decision to include any entry is based on personal taste. Some would question the wisdom or accuracy of individual entries; others may not get the humor or may object to political incorrectness.

TFM Publishing Ltd A Guide to Cancer Genetics in Clinical Practice
Intensive research over the last fifteen years has yielded a vast expansion in our understanding of the role of inheritance and genetics in a variety of cancers. Several inherited conditions have been identified which result in a high risk of various cancers; some of these were previously recognised, but the genetic basis underlying them has now been elucidated. This knowledge is now entering the sphere of routine clinical care. Once the preserve of researchers and highly specialised units, genetic testing for cancer predisposition is now accessible to most clinicians via regional genetics units; in the USA patients can access commercial genetic testing facilities. There is a growing evidence base to guide family screening and clinical management of affected individuals. Surgeons, gastroenterologists, gynaecologists, oncologists, endocrinologists and many others need an awareness of these disorders, an understanding of genetic testing and when it is indicated, and how to manage patients with inherited cancer predisposition and their families. Testing for these conditions has potential legal, ethical and financial implications different from those which most clinicians regularly encounter, and continuing scientific and clinical advance means that patients and their doctors will face regular changes in management. This book covers the basic concepts of cancer genetics. The common inherited cancer syndromes are each dealt with in greater depth, with the current management outlined. This book is aimed at all clinicians who may encounter these conditions in their practice. It aims to facilitate identification of high-risk individuals and families, to inform interaction with geneticists and other sub-specialists, to provide a basis for patient management and to stimulate interest in these fascinating conditions.

TFM Publishing Ltd Cut to the Chase: 100 Matrix Pearls for Doctors
Matrix pearls are the glue that holds medicine together. They are the valuable kernels of wisdom and experience that guide physicians through the complexities of modern medical practice. This book takes the grand oral traditions of medicine and records them as valuable lessons. Most of these pearls arise from heated discussions at the morbidity and mortality (audit) conference, on hospital rounds, in hallway discussions or in the physicians' lounge. Many arise in the privacy of the consultation room or from family discussions. These lessons are usually lost. They are seldom recorded and have never been catalogued. Dr Leo Gordon, distils a thirty-year career in medicine into one hundred witty, poignant and eminently readable essays. Students, nurses, administrators and physicians of all specialities will find in this book a delicious view of the ups and downs of life in medicine. Patients will get a rare look into the thoughts of medical practitioners. This is an indispensable guide through the world of today's medicine.

TFM Publishing Ltd The Evidence for Orthopaedic Surgery & Trauma
The rate of publication of new materials and research exceeds the capacity of any individual to keep fully abreast. So how are we to keep up-to-date and sufficiently informed to practice evidence-based medicine? One way is to rely on authoritative yet unbiased reviews of important questions written by authors dedicated to education of the reader; that is the purpose of this book. It has been a formidable challenge, therefore, for our internationally-based contributors to wade through the sea of evidence and pick out significant advances that represent a true step forward in our knowledge. Whether the reader is an established practitioner wishing to update their knowledge or a trainee wanting to brush up on current opinion before exams, this book should fit the bill. The size of the task would be prohibitive if every aspect of trauma and orthopaedics was to be considered. For this reason we have selected key areas where rapid expansion in knowledge is occurring or where there is topical interest. We hope, therefore, that we have summarised a sufficiently broad range of topics to make this essential reading for orthopaedic surgeons of all grades.

TFM Publishing Ltd Law of Internet & Mobile Communications: The US & EU Contrasted
The internet and the equipment through which it is delivered has revolutionised the way business offers its services and consumers access information. The constantly evolving technology will continue to become mobile both in terms of the apparatus used to get online, such as mobile phones, and also the wireless capability which will become widespread. Commercial use of the technology presents huge legal issues and has led to the introduction of significant new laws to govern online trade. However, the approach taken by the EU in regulating the internet differs markedly from that of the United States. Given the degree of trade between the two continents and in particular between the USA and the UK, it is vital that businesses on both sides of the Atlantic understand the diverse legal regimes, whether they operate in European or North American markets. This book provides an overview of the English law treatment of the internet, which is heavily influenced by the EU, and contrasts it where appropriate to American legal governance. The book examines issues including online contractual formation, privacy law across geographical borders, electronic signatures, online marketing and consumer sales over the internet. The book is essential reading for businesses in both lands.

TFM Publishing Ltd Schein's Common Sense Emergency Abdominal Surgery
Since Mondors times in the forties of the last century there was no other book in surgery to be written so easy and witty Boris D. Savchuk, World Journal of Surgery This, the fifth edition of Scheins Common Sense Emergency Abdominal Surgery, builds on the reputation of the four previous editions. Already a worldwide benchmark, translated into half a dozen languages, this book guides surgeons logically through the minefields of assessment and management of acute surgical abdominal conditions. Tyro and experienced surgeons alike will benefit from the distilled wisdom contained in these pages. The direct, no-nonsense style gives clear guidance while at the same time providing amusing (or saddening) insights into our collective surgical psyche. Old chapters were revised or rewritten and new chapters have been added, including a completely new colorectal section with its new co-editor. Finally, in an attempt to rejuvenate the book, Danny took over the helm while the aging Moshe was pushed down the line Selected reviews and comments from readers of the previous edition What to say, perhaps the most appropriate medical book ever written. This is written with short punchy chapters making it a very difficult book to put down. By the end I was a total enthusiast this is a text like no other I read Unreservedly recommended to old and young alike. A Must Have Book. I am about to end my chief year in general surgery residency my copy of the first edition shows the wear of half a dozen total read throughs and probably hundreds of referencings... Simply perfect. The best choice in surgery for trainees! It makes the more difficult surgery areas very easy to understand. I recommend it to all surgeons. One of the best books I have read in my life! Must read for all docs out there. But the moral of the book is that if scientific rigorousness (protocols, guidelines, evidence-based) and common sense are at odds, follow common sense.
