Figure 1 Publishing Rise Up: The 6 Habits of Resilient Leaders
Organizational resilience and adaptability have never been more important; however, few leaders are truly prepared to lead through crisis. Rise Up: Leadership Habits for Turbulent Times is a call to action for leaders to accept that many of their habits diminish the resilience of their organizations and to commit to a plan that will reposition them as twenty-first-century leaders. In this engaging and thought-provoking guide, authors Ali Grovue and Mike Watson present six distinct yet deeply interconnected habits that all leaders must adopt: Trust, Inquisitiveness, Humility, Optimism, Courage, and Discipline. Embracing these habits will help create a high-functioning culture where employees feel enabled to be the best versions of themselves in pursuit of a common, noble goal. The habits are also foundational to a transformative and enduring strategy, one that is developed and owned not by the leader, but by everyone within the organization. Brought to life through real-life examples taken from Grovue and Watson’s work as strategic leadership advisers in business and sport, and combined with intelligence from academic and psychological research, Rise Up provides leaders with a clear, insightful, and actionable path to building organizations that can adapt—and even thrive—despite hard times.

Figure 1 Publishing Vikky Alexander: Extreme Beauty
Shortly after graduating from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Vikky Alexander made her 1983 entry into the international art world while living in New York by participating in photo historian Abigail Solomon Godeau’s exhibition The Stolen Image and its Uses. For over a decade she was active in a circle of New York artists that merged the critical ideas of Minimalism and Conceptual Art with photography, and came to be known as the Pictures Generation. Since then she has continued to explore the appropriated image through her own photography, especially in relation to iconic representations of nature as well as the spaces of consumerism—two subjects that remain significant in today’s cultural discourses. This book, which accompanies an exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery, is a beautifully illustrated retrospective of nearly four decades of Alexander’s work. Since the 1980s, Alexander has made numerous series of photographs, montages, sculptures, collages and installations, all working to hone a vision that captures the spectacle and inherent falseness of certain public and private spaces. From the exaggerated architecture of Versailles, Disneyland and the West Edmonton Mall, to the use of idyllic “natural” settings and the skin-deep beauty of fashion models, she unravels the mechanisms of display that shape meaning and desire in our culture.

Figure 1 Publishing Whitehorse: An Illustrated History
Whitehorse traces the storied past of Yukon's capital city, from its origins in ancient aboriginal camps through the epic changes of the Klondike Gold Rush, the building of the Alaska Highway, and the settlement of First Nations land claims. Set amidst rolling mountains on the edge of the Yukon River's swift green waters, the city today blends aboriginal traditions with the tastes, music, and cultures of people from around the world. Yukon authors Helene Dobrowolsky and Linda Johnson headed up a talented team of writers and researchers to create this portrait of a legendary place. From its early days, Whitehorse was Yukon's transportation hub, linking the Pacific with trails, then rails, then the elegant sternwheelers that steamed downriver to Dawson City until highways and air travel took their place. The town hosted a dazzling parade of people over the centuries, many of whom appear in these pages: hunters, traders, gold-seekers, soldiers, miners, ships' captains, entrepreneurs, dog-mushers, storytellers, sports icons, politicians, community builders, adventurers, and artists. Filled with lively writing, colorful anecdotes, and an impressive array of contemporary and archival photos, Whitehorse celebrates the history of a very special place.

Figure 1 Publishing Lhù’ààn Mân Keyi Dań Kwanje Nààtsat: Kluane Lake Country People Speak Strong
In this poignant display of the resilience of language, culture, and community in the face of the profound changes brought by settlers, Kluane First Nation Elders share stories from their lives, knowledge of their traditional territory (Á sì Keyi, “my grandfather’s country”), and insights on the building of their self-governing First Nation. With generosity, diligence and deep commitment to their community, Elders from Lhù’ààn Mân Keyi (Kluane First Nation) recorded oral histories about their lives in the southwest Yukon. They shared wisdom, stories and songs passed down from grandparents, aunties and uncles, in Dań kʼe (Southern Tutchone, Kluane dialect) and English. This years-long project arose from the Elders’ desire for their children and future generations to know the foundations of language, culture, skills and beliefs that will keep them proud, healthy and strong. The Elders speak of life before the Alaska Highway, when their grandparents drew on thousands of years of traditional knowledge to live on the land through seasonal rounds of hunting and gathering; the dark years after the building of the Alaska Highway, when children were taken away to residential schools and hunting grounds were removed to form the Kluane Game Preserve and National Park; and the decades since, when the community worked through the Yukon land claims process to establish today’s self-governing First Nation.Inclusivity is a key community value. The Elders’ stories are accompanied by the voices of youth and citizens of all ages, along with a history of the Kluane region. The book is beautifully illustrated with Elders’ photographs, historical images and art work, and photos showing breathtaking views of Kluane mountains, lakes, sites, trails, and activities in the community today. With passionate and deeply informed voices, this is a stirring portrait created by a community that has shown resilience through massive changes and remains dedicated to preserving their culture, language and lands for the generations to come.

Figure 1 Publishing Gathie Falk: Variations
Gathie Falk: Revelations, published on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition curated by Sarah Milroy, investigates the career of a legendary Canadian artist. Now in her nineties, Gathie Falk was born in 1928 in Brandon, Manitoba, settling finally in Vancouver, where she established herself as one of Canada’s most visionary and experimental artists. Flying horses, rows of potted conifers festooned with blossoms and ribbons, floating cabbages, piles of glossy apples, gentlemen’s brogues presented in reliquary style, expanses of water, or burgeoning flower beds exploding with color—these have been the manifestations of Falk’s rampant imagination as she has explored the disciplines of painting, ceramic, performance art and installation over the span of a half century. In all her works, effulgence and order are held in a dynamic tension as she works through her generative themes and variations.A trailblazer on all fronts, she has brought a rich sensibility to bear on her observations of the everyday, perceptions often tinged with the surreal and the uncanny. From her fruit piles to the landmark performances of her early career, to her extended pursuit of themes with variations in her painting practice —expanses of water dazzling with light, riotous flower borders set against cement sidewalks, night skies pierced by starlight or obscured by clouds—she finds the wondrous in the routine world around her, pursuing her work with a modesty and diligence that reflects her Russian Mennonite heritage. The publication includes an introduction by McMichael Chief Curator Sarah Milroy, lead essay by Vancouver curator and writer Daina Augaitis (who examines her performance and installation works in a national and international context), and a host of other artists and writers, rising to the occasion of this career-spanning survey. This catalogue summarizes an extraordinary career, with full page images of her artworks and rarely seen archival photos of the artist’s studio, performance works, and Falk herself. For more than sixty years, Falk has generated work of extraordinary thematic integrity and material invention. This publication will illuminate those connections across disciplines, while also tracing the artist’s journey from youth to old age—from the lushness of the fruit piles, with their sensuous surfaces and dazzling colors, to the sepulchral hush of the night skies.

Figure 1 Publishing Future Luxe: What's Ahead for the Business of Luxury
In Future Luxe: What’s Ahead for the Business of Luxury, Erwan Rambourg identifies the major forces and emerging trends that are set to reshape luxury over the next decade. The expansion of Chinese consumption and the boost in women’s spending power around the world will fuel continued growth in the industry—but even more importantly, fundamental changes are on the horizon. The younger generation is entering the luxury market, bringing new values and demands that will redefine the very meaning of luxury. The sector should expand in the realms of travel, health, leisure, even cannabis. For brands to resonate with these younger consumers they will have to develop substance beyond a high-quality product or a desirable logo. Greenwashing won’t cut it—brands will need to take seriously issues like diversity, sustainability, and ethical production. To ensure his portrait of the industry has the depth and nuance of real-world experience, Rambourg interviews several CEOs from the largest groups and brands, including Kering, Cartier, Puma, and Moncler, in addition to drawing on his own observations from over two decades in luxury. Future Luxe is engaging, wise, and deeply informed, a vital read for those new to the industry as well as veterans planning for continued success.

Figure 1 Publishing The Larder of the Wise: The Story of Vancouver’s James Inglis Reid Ltd.
The Larder of the Wise: The Story of Vancouver’s James Inglis Reid Ltd. traces the history of the iconic store whose traditional Scottish fare and well-remembered hallmarks of “We hae meat that ye can eat” and “Value always” earned the following of devoted customers from inside and outside of the city for almost eighty years. Founded in 1908 and situated for most of its history at 559 Granville Street, Reid’s was a fixture in Vancouver’s downtown shopping district. Customers were drawn by the store’s cured and smoked hams and bacons, expertly prepared sausages and haggis, freshly baked meat pies and scones, and many other favorite items—almost all made on premises using recipes and artisanal techniques passed down for decades. When it closed in 1986 to make way for the Pacific Centre development, many thought an important part of Vancouver heritage was forever lost. But thanks to a treasure-trove of business records, letters, photos and objects preserved from the store, and drawing on her own personal memories and knowledge of the business as the granddaughter of company founder James Reid and the daughter of Gordon Wyness, who succeeded Reid as manager, author M. Anne Wyness brings this special store alive once again. Richly illustrated and engagingly told, this story of a unique family business is also a story of Vancouver itself. Through economic booms and declines, two world wars, shifts in consumer habits, the rise of the suburbs and the changing fortunes of the downtown Granville Street area, Reid’s enjoyed prosperity and endured challenges in step with a changing city.

Figure 1 Publishing Leading Meaningful Change: Capturing the Hearts, Minds, and Souls of the People You Lead, Work With, and Serve
“Straightforward and practical, this book is a must-read for any leader or change practitioner.”―Mark Porter, Executive Vice President People & Culture, WestJet Airlines Leading Meaningful Change is an essential guide for executives, leaders, managers, consultants, and other professionals who need to go beyond applying tactics in a change plan to truly capture the hearts, minds, and souls of the people they lead. Based on her research and 30 years of experience helping people lead and manage meaningful change, Beverley Patwell offers a new framework to guide and enhance the change journey. This approach is humanizing, engaging, and results in the belief in a higher purpose that permeates throughout the organization while at the same time achieves outcomes that are far greater than one person’s single contribution. Patwell’s framework is effective in: • creating a shared vision that compels people to be engaged and involved in the change journey; • developing internal leaders and strong, cohesive and aligned teams to lead, manage and support the changes; and • developing strategies to effectively lead, manage and evaluate the human side of change. At the core of the framework are the Use-of-Self principles applied to the change process as seen through interviews with 24 multi-generational emerging, current and long-service leaders who explain why Use-of-Self remains a key element in successfully leading and managing change. The book also includes practical tools to help leaders and managers across the globe address change leadership challenges. Of special note is a two-year case study of the Senior Leadership Team in the City of Ottawa who led a significant city-wide culture shift using the framework.

Figure 1 Publishing Early Snow: Michael Snow 1947–1962
Michael Snow (1928–2023) was one of Canada’s greatest living artists, and one of the most significant figures in twentieth-century Canadian art. Despite his longstanding international acclaim, the nascent stages of Snow’s career are comparatively underexamined. Early Snow focuses on the creative heights Snow had already reached by the age of thirty-three: wide-ranging achievements in painting, drawing, sculpture, foldage, cinema, and photography. Even as a young man, Snow’s catholic interests in art and literature contributed to an uncanny ability to create profoundly original works of art.In Early Snow, James King (Michael Snow: Lives and Works, 2019) delves into Snow’s formative years and provides close readings of dozens of the artist’s works, placing them in the context of influences that include modern European art (Paul Klee, Ben Nicholson, Alberto Giacometti) and contemporary American art (Willem de Kooning, Conrad Marca-Relli, Donald Judd, Marcel Duchamp). The artworks featured here can be seen as a blueprint for Snow’s later career, but ultimately, King argues, the work created during this era is about transformation.

Figure 1 Publishing The Subscription Boom: Why an Old Business Model is the Future of Commerce
In this clear and informed guide to the business model that’s set to dominate twenty-first-century commerce, Adam Levinter makes a compelling case that the phenomenal success of companies like Amazon, Netflix, Spotify, and Salesforce wouldn’t be possible without the foundation they all have in common: subscription. A surge of subscription boxes in 2012 earned buzz for offering everything from razors to meal kits to underwear; since then the model has proven to be adaptable, profitable, and resilient, even as many traditional retailers struggle to stay relevant in the digital economy. Levinter takes a close look at the leaders of the subscription-based economy to pinpoint the essential elements of the model, and prove that while the basic concept may be as old as magazines, the ubiquity of the internet is enabling a new way for businesses to scale and succeed. The Subscription Boom shows that the appeal to both customers and businesses makes subscription a smart play for virtually any business.

Figure 1 Publishing Divine Threads: The Visual and Material Culture of Cantonese Opera
For more than 100 years, Vancouver has been home to a vibrant and thriving Cantonese opera scene. As a performance art carried out by transient troupes, it is an ephemeral medium that rarely leaves a trace in the historic records. However, an extraordinary treasure trove of early 20th-century Cantonese opera costumes, props, and stage dressings made its way to the Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver, BC. In the first book-length study of this little known collection, April Liu retraces the arduous journeys of early Cantonese opera troupes who began arriving along the west coast of North America during the mid-19th century. A close examination of the costumes and props reveal the moving songs, stories, performances, and ritual practices of early Chinese migrant communities who struggled to make a home in a foreign and often hostile land.

Each chapter takes a different approach to the invitation to reflect upon their institution: some narrate a history of the institution, some focus on particular pieces in the collection, and some consider the significance of the work currently being done for the present and future. They do more than fill in the gaps and background of an already existing discussion. They show that these are places and moments in a much longer story, still ongoing, with many characters—individuals, institutions, communities, artworks, treasures—on different, although often parallel or intersecting, journeys.

Figure 1 Publishing Hazel Wilson: Glory and Exile
Glory and Exile: Haida History Robes of Jut-ke-Nay Hazel Wilson marks the first time this monumental cycle of ceremonial robes by the Haida artist Jut-Ke-Nay (The One People Speak Of)—also known as Hazel Anna Wilson—is viewable in its entirety. On 51 large blankets, Wilson uses painted and appliquéd imagery to combine traditional stories, autobiography, and commentary on events such as smallpox epidemics and environmental destruction into a grand narrative that celebrates the resistance and survival of the Haida people, while challenging the colonial histories of the Northwest Coast.Of the countless robes Wilson created over fifty-plus years, she is perhaps best known for The Story of K’iid K’iyaas, a series about the revered tree made famous by John Vaillant’s 2005 book The Golden Spruce. But her largest and most important work is the untitled series of blankets featured here. Wilson always saw these works as public art, to be widely seen and, importantly, understood. In addition to essays by Robert Kardosh and Robin Laurence, the volume features texts about each robe by Wilson herself; her words amplify the power of her striking imagery by offering historical and personal context for the people, characters, and places that live within her colossal work. Glory and Exile, which also features personal recollections by Wilson’s daughter Kūn Jaad Dana Simeon, her brother Allan Wilson, and Haida curator and artist Nika Collison, is a fitting tribute to the breathtaking achievements of an artist whose vision will help Haida knowledge persist for many generations to come.

Figure 1 Publishing The Emotionally Strong Leader: An Inside-Out Journey to Transformational Leadership
Axiom Business Book Award 2023 Bronze Co-Medalist, Leadership CategoryBronze award recipient for the 2022 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year – Career (Adult Nonfiction) The Emotionally Strong Leader offers those leading our workplaces, organizations, and institutions an opportunity to transform their leadership and their lives by learning to harness the power contained in recognizing and understanding their feelings. For leaders, managing their emotions and leading with a strong mind and a kind heart while using a set of clear, simple, and tested skills and strategies will enable them to connect more authentically and communicate more effectively with their colleagues and teams. This kind of connection and communication creates an environment of trust and belonging that will spur engagement, spike curiosity, and engender fraternity in the workplace. How does one get there? By leading with emotional intelligence.Unfortunately, too many leaders choose another path; one that eschews their emotions and those of their employees as bothersome and unimportant to the task at hand. This limited and damaging viewpoint tends to make people feel as though they are simply task-managing machines and not the terrific and complex individuals full of energy, passion, and unlimited potential that they are. What we need are leaders who understand themselves from the inside out, who know why they do what they do, and who use the information their feelings provide to help them make informed, rational decisions—especially when the stakes are high. We need leaders who express humility, engage in genuine and caring conversations with the people they lead, and who aren’t afraid to admit when they make a mistake. We need executives who are both emotional and strong.Author Carolyn Stern’s six-step self-coaching model—adapted from emotional intelligence courses she’s developed for major universities and corporations across North America—is backed by decades of field experience and top science on emotions and behavior. Stern’s model is the tool leaders need to uncover their barriers to growth and change, set personal goals, and tap into their motivation. It will give them the means and drive to manage the hurdles life throws at them, dramatically impacting their performance, results, and happiness.Simply put, The Emotionally Strong Leader will turn the way readers think about leading on its head.

Figure 1 Publishing Apples, etc.: An Artist's Memoir
Gathie Falk is one of Canada’s most heralded visual artists: she has won the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts, the Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts, and the Gershon Iskowitz Prize; she has been honoured with the Order of British Columbia and the Order of Canada; and her work is featured in major galleries across the country. From performance works involving eggs and bird feathers, to paintings of flower beds and night skies, to celebrated sculptures of fruit, men’s shoes, and dresses, Falk’s chronicles of the everyday span more than four decades and a variety of media. Apples etc. is Gathie Falk’s memoir, a lively, personal, and yet unsentimental reflection on nearly ninety years of art and life. Falk tells of growing up in small Mennonite communities in the 1930s and ’40s. These were hard years, as her Russian immigrant father died just ten months after she was born. While the family struggled financially, Falk recalls cabbage rolls made by hand, a backyard skating rink, and music lessons paid for by an anonymous donor. Her apprenticeship, she says, was a long one. After working a series of menial jobs, she trained as a public school teacher, which led her back to the art classes she’d given up as a child. It has now been fifty years since Falk’s art career was launched, and her “veneration of the ordinary” has sustained her through the deaths of beloved friends and relatives, a short-lived marriage, broken bones, and debilitating pain. Interweaving stories about her community, her family, and her daily rituals with anecdotes about her major artworks, Falk paints a portrait of a life well lived.
