The relics of medieval knights' manors still shape the landscape of Poland today. The anonymous hills contain the remnants of wooden buildings, sometimes ones of stone or brick, as well as numerous tiny artifacts, the trace of the households of the past. Called "grodziska stozkowate" (motte), unlike the region's castles they are not so often visited, but more often destroyed. This book depicts the architecture and daily life of a medieval knight's manor based on the findings of archaeological excavations carried on for half a century, supplemented by written sources. It describes buildings, household items, and the tools used by the people of the past, allowing for a clearer understanding of the lives of medieval knights and their family.

The work offers a detailed analysis of Anglo-Turkiccultural and linguistic relations as reflected in Englishvocabulary between the 16th and early 20th centuries.Words attested in historical English texts forwhich a Turkic language acted as an etymologicallink have not yet received a monograph treatmentand the information to be found in etymological dictionariesof English is usually hardly adequate. Theaim of the current book is to rectify this situation.The main part of the study is an etymological dictionaryof 106 lexical items related to material culturethat were adopted from Turkic or via Turkic, whetherdirectly or not. For each entry a chronological list oforthographic variants is provided, followed by a summaryof information on the word's etymology to befound in selected etymological dictionaries of English.A critical survey of these is the point of departure forthe author's own commentary. Through careful analysisof contexts in which the new lexical items cameto be used in English as well as a thorough scrutinyof their formal features the author reconstructs thetransmission routes along which the vocabulary inquestion was transmitted into English.

The contemporary Chinese engagement in Africa dates back to the 1950's, and it has gained momentum in the last two decades. The Chinese presence in African countries has been getting more and more visible; not only the number of Chinese investments in the area and international agreements has been increasing, but also the size of the Chinese diaspora in the region has grown. China has been looking for new sources of natural resources and markets on which the 'made in China' goods would be welcomed, therefore it spares no efforts to establish and maintain possibly good relationships with Africa, especially with political elites of African countries. At first, the Chinese expansion was supported by the country's image of an older brother, a co-victim of the Western domination, and a example to be followed on the the path leading to development. This image, however, has started to be covered with some spots and shadows, caused by various Chinese activities. In this book we aimed to sketch the image of China and the Chinese in Zambia and Angola, presented by textual media and citizens of these countries, and to trace the most important factors influencing it. Moreover, we brought up some possible consequences of the prevalence of a particular – positive or negative – image for the future development of the Chinese expansion in the region.To obtain the possibly detailed image, we decided to combine quantitative and qualitative analysis of media content with results of our field work conducted in Africa.

Lifelong Learning Today is the result of cooperation between the scientists of the University of Ljubljana and the Jagiellonian University in Cracow. The aim of the authors and editors was not to create a compendium of knowledge about the current state of the development of education in the field of lifelong learning. The creation of a publication that would present a comprehensive, "photographic" image of the state of research and practices in the field of lifelong learning would be so laborious and long-term that it would not keep up with the constant changes which appear in reality. The authors decided to present a compilation of examples illustrating areas worth considering, contexts and practices, as well as certain problems and dilemmas.The image of the reality outlined in this book is very selective, but "spatial" to such an extent that it enables for the grasping of its size and dynamism of development. It encompasses not only significant issues from the standpoint of economy in the scope of key competences, but also concepts related to the social, cultural, scientific, artistic and common schooling, leading to more comprehensive personal development and to raising the quality of life.

This book is about reading. Throughout the book, the author explains the complexity of the dual-language involvement of FL/L2 reading by showing how L1 and FL/L2 factors interplay in FL/L2 reading. The main aim of the book is to explore reading in English in the foreign/second language context as a cross-linguistic phenomenon and to present the results of a think-aloud study which investigated reading in Polish as the L1 and English as the FL of Polish learners of English. The project consisted of six stages, each focussing on a different aspect of reading. Thus, the following was explored: reading strategies, problems and solutions, the way the subjects constructed their representations of the texts, the students' individual patterns of developing comprehension and effectiveness in identifying the main ideas. The findings revealed both differences and similarities between the subjects' reading in Polish and their reading in English. The book offers implications for further research and elucidates the usefulness of think-aloud protocols in foreign language instruction.

The essays collected in the present volume are the result of a long-term project. An international group of scholars addressed questions connected with the relation of the changing concepts of history and the status of history in Shakespearean plays in reading and in actual representation on the stage. Especially interesting aspects of the research deal with the transposition of the time and place of Shakespeare's plays to the time and place of their reception within the context of historical awareness; equally fascinating are the studies which up the perspectives of the medieval and Renaissance contexts. Memory and how in operates (or how we operate it) turns out to be an indispensable complement to the research on the literary and dramatic representation of history. The variety of problems and aspects tackled here opens up interesting insights into the diversity of experience of and reflection on history and representation of history in Shakespeare's plays.

?This book looks at the development of language skills in Swedish as a second language in young adults, beginning from the first months of their second language instruction and ending after three years of intensive language courses. The focus is on three proficiency dimensions: complexity, accuracy, and fluency, and their interplay at group level and in individual students.At the beginning of the second language learning process, accuracy, complexity, and fluency are not integrated in the learner's mind and they tend to act in an arbitrary fashion. During second language development, integration of all dimensions proceeds steadily and after three years of learning the discrepancy between different aspects of proficiency is very low. The study traces the mutual impact of each dimension on particular aspects in order to identify four distinct learner profiles. The goal of this book is to provide a platform for further discussion of the dynamics of second language development and the interconnectedness of the systems involved in this development. Iwona Kowal calls for an individual approach to be taken with every learner and for development to be treated as a constant interplay between many factors.

The analysis of a selection of Emily Dickinson's texts confirms the notion that suffering occupies the principal position in the poet's work. Her poetry constitutes an example of a painful literary quest for subjectivity as well as an act of self-transcendence, which means that through her writing the poet obtained conscious control over her personal anguish. By using pain as a poetic strategy she transformed her private biography into a literary text. In this way she became a model for coping with suffering and using it for self-examination and self-development. In Emily Dickinson's poems suffering creates a new language and a new outlook on the self and the world. During the investigation of her poetic texts three dimensions of suffering as a poetic strategy have been distinguished: suffering as a theme, suffering as a subversive force affecting the language, and suffering as a form of poetic expression. The critical tool used for this analysis was the theory of Julia Kristeva, who emphasises these elements as crucial in the interpretation of literary texts. The healing power of Emily Dickinson's poetry lies in her presenting that suffering also has the positive, empowering side. By displaying an astounding autonomy and showing an alternative way of existence the poet demonstrated that fulfilment can be understood in a very broad sense. Her poetry constitutes evidence that the creative processes can be used as psychotherapy for both the creator and the recipient.

The European Union as an area of freedom, security, and justice has created a community which adheres to unified laws. In matters regulated by labour law (individual and collective) as well as social security law, the above aim may be met by introducing unified regulations, allowing for identical ways of resolving conflicts of labour law that arise in work relations where there is a cross national element present. In order to ensure legal stability within work relations, national regulations concerning international private labour law had to be replaced by unified conflicts of law norms. These norms are to be applied by both employees and employers of EU member states as well as applied in work relations situations where third parties are involved. EU private international law is a collection of international private labour law regulations issued by EU institutions, which unanimously and in a unifying fashion describe the legal situations of the parties to a work relationship, where there is a foreign element present, allowing for the application of foreign laws based on citizenship, residency, where the headquarters of one of the parties is located, where the work is carried out or where the action has taken place.

A successful health care unit means meeting patients' expectations, taking advantage of the latest organizational and technological solutions and, at the same time, providing financial balance. To achieve such a success the units have to put stress on modern methods of management, taking into account the cost analysis, its structure, controlling and caring about income. It is surprising why it has been so difficult for the hospitals to implement changes in their organization or management in favorable conditions for innovations. Is there any opposition to the innovations, successfully implemented in other companies and enterprises, which makes it impossible to introduce them in Polish hospitals? Transposing organizational solutions from other fields of economy to medical units is the task not only for the scientists, but also for the managers of health care who are responsible for hospitals' existence and finding a common ground for cooperation with the representatives from the world of medicine. However, the latter must join and support the system of management as all its parts are equally important so, if one single element of the system, seemingly unimportant, is inefficient, the system collapses.

How are the numerous member states of the European Union today to reach proper consensus on an eventual common EU social model? In this meditative and reflective philosophical, literary, and social inquiry, first presented as invited lectures at the Institute for European Studies of the Jagiellonian University, Peter McCormick highlights the still largely overlooked conceptual and linguistic resources of the distinctive European high modernist poetry of suffering for freshly rearticulating some of the most basic moral and ethical values at the historical roots of European civilization. Against contrasted readings of modernity in the works of both analytic and hermeneutic philosophers, successive studies investigate the figures of moral discourse, moral perception, and both moral motivation and ethical emancipation in the poetry of the Nobel Laureats, T.S. Eliot, Paul Valery, and Eugenio Montale. The result is the renewed availability of richly resourceful formulations of fundamental European values for stimulating the ongoing work of achieving appropriate political consensus for a future harmonized European Union social policy.

The present study focuses on the way that Jews were portrayed in various scholarly journals and lay gazettes published in French in the United Provinces of the Netherlands, mostly by Huguenot refuges. Many of these sources have previously escaped scholarly attention, and as such are valuable sources for exploration. The scholarly journals are mostly focused on discussion of historical and theological aspects of Jewish people and Judaism, the origins of their language and its influence on others, and their customs and nuances related to worship. The lay gazettes discuss gossip and contemporary events, portraying the Jews as their editors see them. Jews were depicted in these sources in several unique ways which are identified in this study. Particular attention is given to the dimension of privacy, which provides an additional tool of analysis aimed at better understating of how these constructs were created. The final part of this book is focusing on instances of how Muslims in general and Turks in particular, as well as the Siamese, were portrayed in the same sources, in order to investigate whether they were treated differently than the Jews.

In addition to the issues constituting the basis of microbial biotechnology, such as microorganisms culturing or their use in industry and environmental protection, the book includes modern analytical techniques known as "omics", as well as digital techniques used to record adverse changes in the environment those resulting from the harmful activity of bacteria and fungi. A color atlas (Chapter 8) with photos of the fungi discussed in each chapter was also included. The book was prepared with the use of many years of scientific and didactic experience of the authors who conduct classes in various fields and specializations of natural sciences. This resulted in the interdisciplinary nature of the publication. It shows results of the research linked to their scholarly and didactic interests.It is a collection of six papers dealing with selected issues in the field of Arabic language and literature, focused on phenomena and processes taking place in contemporary Arab world.Teaching Arabic as a foreign language faces many methodological challenges connected with the specificity and complexity of the sociolinguistic situation in the Arabic world. They mostly concern the necessity for considering different types (registers) of the language, distinguishing, understanding and using which makes it possible for learners to achieve full communication skills.The end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century brought above all a new look at the didactic process, forcing revision of the traditional grammar–translation method in teaching foreign languages. Higher education schools must cope with new problems connected with their functioning on the broad market of formal and informal education, which is determined by the term "success on the job market". Needs and expectations of learners change. Which direction will development of Arabic Studies take then? How to bring together the mission of higher education institutions and pragmatic needs of the market, or current needs of "consumers" and guidelines of central curricula. Romantic writers often asserted their individuality, but this assertion tended to take the form of positioning themselves in relation to other authors and literary texts. Thus they implicitly acknowledged the rich network of broadly understood poetic dialogue as an important and potent source for their own creativity. When in 1816 John Keats wrote "Great spirits now on earth are sojourning," he celebrated the originality of his contemporaries and the historical significance of his times, pointing to deep interest in "the hum of mighty works" in all the fields of human activity, to which "the nations" ought to listen. Keats's sonnet suggests not only stimulating exchanges between poets, artists and social thinkers in the same language, but also the idea of transnational appreciation and dialogue.The volume takes up this idea and explores the dialogues of Romantic authors within the wide scope of European and American cultures. The main topic of the book is how to argue for formal epistemic norms of credence. The author advocates formal justificational pluralism, suggesting that it is reasonable to use various formal tools, e.g. different “scoring rules,” in arguments for synchronic and diachronic norms. Leszek Wroński first examines various occasions on which modern formal epistemology fails to live up to its “formal” label. Among the topics considered next are: the Dutch Book Theorem and Arguments (which fails according to the author), a novel version of the Principal Principle, and a constructive approach to higher order probabilities. The author argues then that the best method for dealing with various belief update problems is that of minimizing inverse relative entropy, and defends the claim that for evaluating an agent’s credal state at a single moment the Brier Score seems to be the way to go.

This book contributes to the emerging research on the growth process of firms, with a focus on the expansion of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). A comprehensive approach to the issue of small firm growth draws upon empirical findings of the characteristics and economic importance of high-growth enterprises and the extant base of theoretical approaches to the growth of firms, with an emphasis on the literature of firm boundaries (scope and size). Consequently, this research adopts a deductive approach to building the conceptual framework of SME growth by integrating the resource-based view of the firm and transaction cost theory. This integrative theoretical framework was tested by using the multi-case study method to conclude with a proposal of the model of the growth process of SMEs. The model explains the choices of high-growth entrepreneurs regarding contractual arrangements, portfolio development, sources of new products, and associated governance in the expansion process. Consistent with the heterogeneity of SME expansion, the research reveals three equifinal patterns of these choices instead of only one path. This book is valuable for bridging separate and divergent streams of the literature on firms’ growth, namely, entrepreneurship, microeconomics, and strategic management literature related to firm boundary decisions.

This book is an extensive monographic study of Elizabeth Jennings (1926-2001), one of the most remarkable poetic voices in England in the second half of the twentieth century. Briefly linked with the poets of "The Movement" in the 1950s, Jennings soon gained her poetic independence and high esteem on the English literary scene. Primarily a prolific lyricist and religious poet, she also published critical prose bespeaking her fascination with the potential of poetry and its capacity to reach out toward transcendence. The monograph takes into consideration a substantial body of Jennings’s poems in the attempt to relate them to the poet’s Christian beliefs and her profound spiritual experience. It shows how in Jennings’s life and creative output the credo of her faith is interwoven with the ars poetica of her craft. The analysis calls attention to Jennings’s emphasis on the intrinsic link between poetry and mysticism and her deep-seated conviction of the unique power of poetic language. The book discusses religious inspiration in Jennings’s poems and explores her perception of the words of poetry as inextricably linked with the divine word and viewed in the perspective of the Roman Catholic notion of sacrament. Sacramental awareness is not only seen as a conspicuous property of Elizabeth Jennings’s religious profile and an attribute of her thinking, but it is also adopted as the principal and indispensable frame of reference for the analytical and critical discourse presented in the book.

The volume attempts to diagnose the communicative dimension of the public sphere in terms of its operation as a space of deliberation, with particular consideration for mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion of social actors, topics, and arguments.The individual chapters result from research dating from the 1980s through 2014. They demonstrate the dynamic of changes based on consistent tracking of the fields of nuclear and wind energy and shale gas. This collection of essays is a unique contribution to understanding the issues confronting law schools in Central and Eastern Europe and countries of the former Soviet Union as they seek to ensure that their programs meet the needs of 21st century lawyers. The book is unusual in two ways. First, most of the authors are faculty members at universities in the region. Despite a plethora of initiatives to reform legal education in Central and Eastern Europe and countries of the former Soviet Union, there has been little literature on the topic coming from the region itself. Second, the essays address structural issues as well as pedagogical ones (e.g., the disincentives for academics to invest time in developing new teaching methodologies and the problems posed by rigid government standards for higher education). It is particularly useful to have these essays collected in one book, so that readers can see both problems and some suggested solutions in a cross-cultural context.

This book addresses the issues of memory (a more suitable word would be Marianne Hirsh's term of postmemory) of the Holocaust among young Poles, the attitudes towards Jews and the Holocaust in the comparative context of educational developments in other countries. The term Jews is, as rightly noted Joanna Tokarska-Bakir (2010) a decontextualized term used here in the meaning of Antoni Sulek (2010) as a collective symbolic entity. The focus was on education (transmitting values), attitudinal changes and actions undertaken to preserve (or counteract) the memory of Jews and their culture in contemporary Poland. The study to which the book primarly refers was conducted in 2008 and was a second study on a national representative sample of Polish adolescents after the first one undertaken in 1998. This volume was planned as an academic and methodological exchange of views between historians and other scholars dealing with the social history of World War I in East-Central Europe. Its main aim is an attempt to answer the question of how the conflict affected intellectuals in certain clearly defined aspects (family, education, religion, gender, sexuality). Their wartime experi­ences were shaped by their whereabouts, everyday life, standard of living, and, in the case of soldiers, the type of military service.It also takes a closer look at members of the intelligentsia who fought in the trenches, those who worked in propaganda, or those who held civil service posts in the belligerent countries. It remains an important question whether the cooperation of intellectuals and scholars with the war apparatus was conscious, voluntary, whether it was a form of social mission carried out for the state or nation, or an attempt by the governments and rulers to use the “naive clerks” ­instrumentally. The book also offers a reflection on the intellectuals’ stance towards militarism and the outbreak of war: their reactions, thoughts, predictions, and the way they interpreted the war events for society. It seeks to find out how the war was conceptualized by intellectuals, how it was commented upon, and how the postwar reality was conceived.
