Architecture and the architectural discourse have be - come ever more important for the creative hub of Berlin. Whether new constructions or building redevelopments, interior design, landscape architecture or urban planning, projects related the German capital stands for sophis - ticated concepts and high quality. As it does every year BUILDING BERLIN presents the most important and interesting projects from the past year in Berlin as well as works outside Berlin by Berlin based architects. The presentation of the approximately 70 projects in eight chapters is accompanied by essays on exemplary aspects. Especially noteworthy is an analysis of the different strategies for hospital and health facilities in underdevel - oped regions of the world. Alaskans were introduced to the airplane as early as 1913, when town officials in Fairbanks invited stunt flyers James and Lilly Martin to fly over the local baseball park on July 4. Because many areas are only accessible by air, this enormous state is still defined today by aviation so that aviation and Alaska have formed a very special symbiosis that is unique both in the world of geography and flying. This publication celebrates the 100th anniversary of this remarkable relationship. It looks at aviation through artifacts of flight, popular culture and other ephemera; objects that are unique to flying in Alaska and that impressively convey stories of the pioneering spirit, engineering and the North. The greening of façades with plants gives a piece of nature back to the city. But a green façade is much more than a charming view: Thanks to its insulating effect, it evens out extreme swings in temperature, protects against UV radiation and improves sound insulation. In that regard one does not have to always rely on the usual ivy. Other evergreen or fruit bearing plants and even exotic flowers can be used as façade decoration. In that way varied and creative greening can be created which lend a colorful aesthetic tone to the cityscape. The 50 projects presented here give an overview of this current trend in landscape architecture.

The focus of the presentation is on the individual manuscripts of the architects and designers. For some time now, many architects and designer are returning to manually drawn depictions of their designs – despite the fact that the latest computer-aided visualization techniques allow the creation of almost perfect illusions of planned build-ings. However, they often lack in conveying life and atmosphere to the building resulting in a feeling of coldness and distance from the observer. Beyond the pure conveying of information through a mechanical drawing, the various techniques of manual drawing can convey individual sentiments and impressions. The result is a larger degree of authenticity coupled with an emphasis of the human dimension of architecture.
