Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Environmental Co-operation and Institutional Change: Theories and Policies for European Agriculture
Although the history of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is dominated by a process of centralisation, growing pressures to integrate agri-environmental problems into the CAP have revealed the need to embrace decentralised approaches in an efficient federal structure. Indeed, in recent years it has become increasingly evident that the agricultural sector must undergo fundamental changes in order to enter an era of sustainable development. The authors do not believe that this will be an easy process, not only because agricultural policies in Europe are dominated by specific interest groups, but primarily because integrating environmental aspects into the CAP requires difficult institutional change at different levels. Centralised decision making at the EU level has characterised recent agricultural policy and the authors argue that centralised and hierarchical governance structures may fail to produce adequate solutions if they are not linked to regional and more diverse institutional arrangements. They demonstrate how these new institutional arrangements should be designed and how this change can be organised. In particular, they highlight the need for cooperation, and the participation of farmers, as a strategy to cope with agri-environmental issues and resource management problems. Addressing the value of co-operative strategies to achieve sustainable development and cope with agri-environmental problems, this book will be of great interest to agricultural economists and those with an interest in ecological reforms of agricultural policies. It will also be particularly relevant to policymakers within EU nations, as well as policymakers within the countries of Eastern and Central Europe who will be amongst the first to be admitted to the EU in the next wave of expansion.

Birkhauser Relational Theories of Urban Form: An Anthology
This commentated anthology contains essential passages from eight important architecture and urban design theory texts from the 1960s to the 2010s. With these excerpts, the editors discursively outline the concept of form as a relational field of tension between man and material. The relational element is treated not only as a topos, but above all the interpretational perspective of architectural theory. The texts are arranged under the guiding themes of Type, Process, Place, and Things. The texts themselves were written by authors including Christopher Alexander, Oswald Mathias Ungers, Fumihiko Maki, Alison and Peter Smithson, Lucius Burckhardt, Bruno Latour, and Manuel de Solà-Morales. They offer a paradigmatic foundation that encourages further research and the continued view through the "relational lens."

Edinburgh University Press Contemporary Morphological Theories: A User's Guide
In spite of the central position that the concept word has among the basic units of language structure, there is no consensus as to the definition of this concept (or network of related concepts). Many perspectives are needed in order to gain even a schematic idea of what words are, how words may be composed, and what relationships there might be between words. Many linguists have put forward frameworks for describing the domain of morphology, each framework proceeding from its author’s assumptions, prioritizing distinct formal and functional dimensions, and therefore entering into de facto competition. This book addresses the needs of the language scholar/student who finds her/himself engaged in morphological analysis and theorizing. It offers a guide to existing approaches, revealing how they can either complement or compete with each other.

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Rethinking Trade and Commercial Policy Theories: Development Perspectives
Mainstream trade and commercial policy theories with lineage traced back to Smith, Ricardo, Torrens, and Mill have often trivialised the process of development as static resource allocation. Peter Sai-wing Ho re-interprets the works of these classical economists and those of the so-called 'protectionists' Hamilton, List, Manoïlesco, Prebisch, Myrdal, and Singer to offer an alternative framework that considers the role of trade, foreign investment, and technology in engendering uneven development. The author reveals that these protectionists actually offered sophisticated prescriptions involving non-trade instruments, interweaving import-substitution with export-promotion, and emphasising indigenous technological-capability cultivation. This controversial book offers a unique approach to rethinking the trade and development literature and will therefore strongly appeal to researchers, academics, and students of trade and development as well as those involved in the history of economic thought.

Edinburgh University Press Religion: The Classical Theories
What is Religion?' This is the first text to review in a single volume the theories of religion which have been put forward by both believers and non-believers. 'Why theories of religion?' After raising and answering this question the author begins his examination of theories of religion by first looking at the explanations given by religious believers (Revelation and Religious Experience). He then considers the views of thinkers who have sought to transform religion into philosophy (Plato, Kant and Hegel), before reviewing the theories of those who have seen religion as arising out of errors in primitive thinking (Tylor, Frazer and Levy-Bruhl) and those 'masters of suspicion', as Paul Ricoeur has called them (Feuerbach, Nietzsche, Marx and Freud) who offered what they believed to be exhaustive psychological and sociological theories of the origin and nature of religion. In the course of his discussion the author also engages with many contemporary thinkers whose discussions of religion have been based on these classical accounts. In a brief conclusion the author tries to assess the future of the religions of the world in light of the increasingly close inter-religious encounters that are becoming a feature of the 'global village' of thetwenty-first century. Key Features * Comprehensive survey of the field * Theories will be considered against the phenomenon of religion world-wide * Theories offered in a way that lets the student make up his or her own mind

Open University Press Theorizing Sexuality
This book surveys and evaluates the sociological contribution to the study of sexuality. It not only maps major theoretical shifts and debates, but also offers a unique examination of the topic that emphasises the sociality of sexuality. In particular, it considers the institutional, biographical and interactional contexts of our sexual lives as well as the cultural significance and everyday practice of sexuality. The authors contest not only popular understandings of sexuality as natural, but also psychoanalytic explanations and forms of analysis that privilege the cultural construction of sexuality over its everyday social accomplishment. In particular, they challenge the 'specialness' of sexuality within contemporary culture, arguing that sexuality is better understood as a routine part of everyday social life. The book confronts the anxieties associated with sexuality in the late modern, western world and engages with wider debates on social transformations in late modernity. As such, it provides both an overview of the field of sexuality as well as setting an agenda. Theorizing Sexuality is key reading for students, researchers and academics interested in theories of sexuality, gender and intimacy and anyone concerned with the social conditions that inform our sexual identities.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Fieldnotes in the Critical Study of Religion: Revisiting Classical Theorists
This book introduces students to the so-called classics of the field from the 19th and 20th centuries, whilst challenging readers to apply a critical lens. Instead of representing scholars and their works as virtually timeless, each contributor provides sufficient background on the classic work in question so that readers not only understand its novelty and place in its own time, but are able to arrive at a critical understanding of whether its approach to studying religion continues to be useful to them today. Scholars discussed include Muller, Durkheim, Freud and Eliade. Fieldnotes in the Critical Study of Religion: Revisiting Classical Theorists therefore offers a novel way into writing both a history and ethnography of the discipline, helping readers to see how it has changed and inviting them to consider what—if anything—endures and thereby unites these diverse authors into a common field.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Rethinking Old Age: Theorising the Fourth Age
With the aspiration for a long life now achievable for many individuals, the status of old age as a distinct social position has become problematic. In this radical re-examination of the nature of old age, Paul Higgs and Chris Gilleard reveal the emergence of a 'fourth age' that embodies the most feared and marginalised aspects of old age, conceptually linked to and yet distinct from traditional models of old age. Inspired by the authors' ground-breaking work on the third and fourth age and supported by extensive sociological, medical and historical research, Rethinking Old Age offers a unique and timely analysis of the fourth age as a 'social imaginary' that is shaped and maintained by the social, cultural and political discourses and practices that divide later life. It stands as a significant resource for students, academics and practitioners of sociology, ageing studies, gerontology, social policy, health studies, social work and nursing.

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Performance: Theories and Evidence about Organizational Responsibility
Does it pay for businesses to act morally? This book attempts to answer this question. Taking a positive approach, it demonstrates that, under certain conditions, organizations can act responsibly and profitably at the same time. It elaborates on these conditions and provides evidence for the assumed positive relation between responsibility and profitability. The author uses analysis of the acceptance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) policies across Europe, the consequences of CSR on motivation, commitment and absenteeism, and organizational responsibility and the bottom of the pyramid as evidence that organizations can be profitable and responsible at the same time. Uniquely taking an organizational perspective on CSR, scholars and students of business ethics will find this impressive book to be an invaluable resource. Business professionals will also find plenty of important information in this admirable compendium.

Emerald Publishing Limited The History of Entrepreneurship in Mexico: Contextualizing Theory, Theorizing Context
Entrepreneurs develop based on their surroundings. It is easy to understand US entrepreneurs, with the wealth of information available about their development, but how does working in Mexico influence entrepreneurship, and emerging entrepreneurs? Exploring the history of Mexico's entrepreneurs, expert authors Araceli Almaraz Alvarado and Oscar Javier Montiel Méndez delve into the empirical and theoretical opportunities that emerge from this historical analysis. Current literature on Mexican entrepreneurship points out the importance of contextualising entrepreneurial lives, and asks us to look across agents, sectors and regions, to reach a better understanding of the trajectories of entrepreneurship in Mexico. Including chapters across different businesses in Mexico, the editors and contributors seek to expose the convergence between theory and practice. For students of business and international development, this is an unmissable text containing the most current research on Mexican entrepreneurship.

The University of Chicago Press Theorizing Myth: Narrative, Ideology, and Scholarship
In "Theorizing Myth", Bruce Lincoln traces the way scholars and others have used the category of "myth" to fetishize or deride certain kinds of stories, usually those told by others. He begins by showing that "mythos" yielded to "logos" not as part of a (mythic) "Greek miracle", but as part of struggles over political, linguistic, and epistemological authority occasioned by expanded use of writing and the practice of Athenian democracy. Lincoln then turns his attention to the period when myth was recuperated as a privileged type of narrative, a process he locates in the political and cultural ferment of the 18th and 19th centuries. Here, he connects renewed enthusiasm for myth to the nexus of Romanticism, nationalism and Aryan triumphalism, particularly the quest for a language and set of stories on which nation-states could be founded. In the final section of this book, Lincoln advocates a fresh approach to the study of myth, providing varied case studies to support his view of myth - and scholarship on myth - as ideology in narrative form.

ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon On the Idea of Humanitarian Intervention – A New Compartmentalization of IR Theories
This study launches a systematic inquiry into the nature of the concept of humanitarian intervention, focusing on its primary function of the protection of the endangered civilian populations who find themselves at the grave risk of genocide. This is strengthened by a recollection of selected historical examples of similar events and the responses to them by the international community, empowered by our modern understanding of the principle of state sovereignty, human rights, and anti-genocide legislation. Applying the in-statu-nascendi ontology that accounts for the latest hybridized compartmentalisation of various IR-related theories, the author provides a deep ontological inquiry into the nature, origin, and genesis of the idea of humanitarian intervention and opens up a broader debate on the limits of the principle of state sovereignty as well as on the international community's ignorance of some of the most severe cases of human rights abuses around the world.

DOM Publishers Theorising Architecture in Sub-Saharan Africa: Perspectives, Questions, and Concepts
Considering the immense diversity of sub-Saharan Africa's architecture and built realities, does it make sense to speak of an African architecture? How does this differ from architecture in Africa? What does the term architecture actually mean in the African context? And how could these questions be conceptualised while leaving behind pre-existing theoretical moulds and biases? Searching for new ways to theorise sub-Saharan African architecture, this collection of 49 essays broadens and develops the discourse around the architecture of a very rapidly changing continent. Its authors – practising architects and renowned scholars – put forward an array of heterogeneous perspectives, question old tropes and emerging narratives, and challenge popular concepts whilst proposing new ones. All with the aim of critically examining and advancing theoretical reflection on African architectures, both on the continent and globally.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Darwin Studies: A Theorist and his Theories in their Contexts
This is the second of a pair of volumes by Jonathan Hodge, collecting all his most innovative, revisionist and influential papers on Charles Darwin and on the longer run of theories about origins and species from ancient times to the present. The focus here is on Darwin himself and the development of his theories. Darwin is now such an iconic hero in our histories and such a commanding authority in our sciences that it has become a serious challenge to study him as just another disaffected medical student - or would-be vicar, aspiring zoology professor or gentleman of independent means -- thinking about sexual reproduction in animals and plants, about coral islands or about rock strata and fossils in post-Napoleonic Edinburgh, Cambridge, South America and London. But the challenge is one well worth taking up, as the papers here demonstrate, for such studies require us integrate the precise details of his inquiries with those larger scientific, metaphysical, religious and political issues of the day that a young, ambitious 'philosopher' and 'naturalist' was then expected to engage. This contextual understanding can then allow us to reinterpret his relations to such longer- run legacies as Christian Platonism, Enlightenment materialism and British capitalism. Together with the companion volume devoted to those and other long run legacies, this volume offers throughout reinterpretations of both the theorist and his theories.

Cambridge University Press Introduction to Quantum Field Theory: Classical Mechanics to Gauge Field Theories
This textbook offers a detailed and uniquely self-contained presentation of quantum and gauge field theories. Writing from a modern perspective, the author begins with a discussion of advanced dynamics and special relativity before guiding students steadily through the fundamental principles of relativistic quantum mechanics and classical field theory. This foundation is then used to develop the full theoretical framework of quantum and gauge field theories. Wits University Press Psychodynamic Psychotherapy in South Africa: Contexts, theories and applications
This book takes the reader on a journey through the sensitive and often painful realities of contemporary South African life. Offering a fresh and innovative perspective on psychodynamic psychotherapy, it captures the possibilities of using psychodynamic theory in service of progressive and socially relevant application. Psychoanalysis as a long term modality is inaccessible to the average South African. In this book the authors describe how psychoanalytically orientated or psychodynamic psychotherapy can be practiced as a short-term endeavour and applied to contemporary issues facing the country. Psychodynamic work is currently undertaken by clinical psychologists, therapists, clinicians, trainers, teachers, clinical supervisors, consultants and researchers working in university settings, state hospitals, community projects, private practice and research. The debates, clinical issues, therapeutic practice and nature of research covered in the book are widely representative of the work being done in the country. The need for shorter term therapy models and evidence-based interventions is as acute in global practice as it is locally. The lessons learned in South Africa have broader implications for international practitioners, and the authors stress the potential inherent in psychoanalytic theory and technique to tackle the complex problems faced in all places and settings characterised by increasing globalisation and dislocation. The book is structured in three main sections. The first introduces contemporary issues about race, identity, disavowal and otherness viewed within an intersubejctive theoretical frame. The second section deals broadly with psychodynamic perspectives in trauma, the impact of violence on attachment, family function and individual survival, and the psychotherapeutic dilemmas these conditions raise for psychodynamically orientated therapists. The third section deals with a range of highly relevant social issues, including the complex relationship between psychoanalysis and traditional healing, the politics and psychodynamics of gendered violence, the challenge of running psychodynamic group therapy community projects with South African AIDS orphans, the intergenerational and psychodynamic processes in the proliferation of serial murder in post-apartheid South Africa and the psychodynamic potential for reparative therapy in contemporary South Africa. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy in South Africa is aimed at local and international practitioners and students, while non-specialist readers will find the text informative and accessible.

John Wiley & Sons Inc Beneath the Mask: An Introduction to Theories of Personality
Beneath the Mask presents classic theories of human nature, much as each theorist might if the theorist were to teach his or her ideas to people encountering them for the first time. Through a theorist-by-theorist approach, this Eighth Edition continues to explore the ideas of personality theorists developmentally, incorporating the personal origins of ideas to illuminate links between the psychology of each theorist and that theorist's own psychology of persons. Beneath the Mask presents the "sequence of thinking" for more than 20 theorists and demonstrates how the thinking that led to major theories is nested in the life experience of the theorists within the context of the surrounding culture. The authors emphasize each theorist's life history as the basis for the ideas that constitute his or her theories, making them easier to understand as "pictures of human nature." John P. Wilson has revised the text in a manner that preserves and improves upon the best features of the late Robert N. Sollod and Christopher Monte's work.

Springer International Publishing AG Bioethics and Biopolitics: Theories, Applications and Connections
This volume links three different theoretical approaches that have a common focus on the relationship between biopolitics and bioethics. This collection of papers can be categorized into different domains that are representative of the contemporary usage of biopolitics as a concept. On the one hand, several chapters develop a clear and up-to-date understanding of the primary sources of the concept and related theories of Agamben, Negri or Foucault and approach the question of relevance within the field of bioethics. Another group of papers apply the philosophical concepts and theories of biopolitics (biopower, Homo Sacer, biocitizenship) on very specific currently debated bioethical issues. Some scholars rely on the more mundane understanding of (bio)politics and investigate how its relationship with bioethics could be philosophically conceptualized. Additionally, this work also contains papers that follow a more legally oriented analysis on the effects of contemporary biopolitics on human rights and European law. The authors are philosophers, legal scholars or bioethicists. The major strength of this volume is to provide the reader with major insights and orientation in these different contemporary usages of the concept and theories of biopolitics, within the context of its various ethically relevant applications.

Intellect Books T-Squared: Theories and Tactics in Architecture and Design
An interdisciplinary collection with its origins in the 2018 National Conference on the Beginning Design Student, hosted by the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning at the University of Cincinnati, the overarching focus of which was on 'TIME'. The book includes contributions from some scholars who were not involved in the conference but whose voices are important to the conversation. T-Squared: Theories and Tactics in Architecture and Design has three primary aims. First, it reveals and illuminates the extensive and explicit relationship between the research that shapes art, architecture and design practices, and the studio prompts and assignments that are developed by faculty for students engaging the creative disciplines. Second, it demonstrates that pedagogical inquiry and invention can be a (radical) research endeavour that can also become an evolutionary agent for faculty, students, institutions and communities. Third, it makes available to a larger audience a set of innovative ideas and exercises that have until now been known to limited numbers of students and faculty, hidden behind the walls of studio courses and institutions. This book will appeal to anyone interested in design thinking and design process as well as to architects, architectural educators and architecture students who may particularly identify in it stirrings of a new world order and a call to arms. Each chapter of T-Squared is separated into two parts: THEORY (T1) and TACTICS (T2). In T1, the authors offer mini-manifestos about topics that relate to their professional interests and efforts. In T2, the authors delineate exercises that reflect the ideascapes and methodologies presented in T1. The exercises in T2 are adapted for the reader from assignments given to students enrolled in design studios at a variety of universities. In their current incarnation, they offer anyone with tenacity, imagination and an adventurous attitude towards architecture and design access to distinct sets of provocative questions, procedures and modes. The T2 offerings require the reader’s engagement and imagination and the rolling up of sleeves – while there may be steps to follow, many of the exercises read like Fluxus scores and require investment rather than obedience. A suspension of disbelief is required – but all seriously creative folk (like you, reader) understand that already. Primary readership will be among design educators and students looking for a window through which to view the ways design is being introduced, taught and positioned across disciplines and institutions, and to architects, architectural educators and architecture students.

Naval Institute Press Strategic Theories
Admiral Raoul Castex is France's most important modern naval strategist. Military historian Eugenia Kiesling offers the essence of Castex's original five volume study, Théories Stratégiques, in a useful one-volume abridgment and a very readable translation. It emphasizes the admiral's method of strategic analysis while omitting most of the historical narrative. Included are chapters defining strategy and relating it to policy and geography, analyzing the role of maritime forces and the significance of command at sea, prescribing a theory of conduct of operations, and introducing Castex's favorite themes: strategic manoeuvre, stratégie générale, and the theory of "perturbation."Two narrative chapters on German operations in the North Sea from 1914 to 1916 remain as examples of the author's historical style. The introduction places Castex's work in four distinct contexts: the international debate among naval theorists on the nature and importance of "command at sea," the controversy within France between advocates of the "historical" and "material" schools of naval strategy, the contemporary concern over coordinated naval strategy for total war, and his contribution to the formulation of French strategy between the world wars. In an era of expanding global responsibilities and shrinking national economies, Castex's balanced view of naval power offers many insights for today's new generation of naval thinkers.

Three volumes will be published in September 2014, and the remaining three in spring 2015. Volume one deals with a broad definition of architecture in the context of new media. Volume two is devoted to media-related innovations in the area of music—from automatic methods of composition in the music of Mozart to a theory of molecular music. Volume three addresses the impact of new media on art and discusses how pictures become interactive and viewers become part of the work—how reality replaces representation. The themes of the other three volumes are literature, politics, and theory in the context of new media.

Edinburgh University Press Religion: The Modern Theories
A comprehensive and approachable introduction to social scientific theories of religion as they have developed in the twentieth century. In the first section the groundwork is laid for the theories developed in the twentieth century, introducing the significant thinkers who have established some of the main avenues of discussion including Marx, Durkheim, Weber, Freud, Jung, and Otto. The second section introduces the main approaches of the social scientific disciplines that study religion: sociological, psychological, phenomenological, feminist and anthropological. The third section puts religion under the microscope, examining constituent elements such as ritual, symbolism and myth. Bristol University Press Practical Social Pedagogy: Theories, Values and Tools for Working with Children and Young People
Social pedagogical work is a field of practice that is indebted to and illuminated by aspects of knowledge from sociology and psychology, but many practitioners feel that social pedagogical theories are too abstract and distant from the challenges faced in practice. In Practical Social Pedagogy Jan Storo shows the reader for the first time how the theories and practices of social pedagogy interlock. The book combines social pedagogy theories, psychology, sociology and social work with a social constructionist perspective to help practitioners guide children and young people to cope better with the challenges they face as they grow up. The author emphasises that the actualities of practice are first disclosed in the meeting between the professional practitioner and the client. The book uses many practical examples to help make the application of social pedagogy more accessible, and is ideal for students on courses covering work with children and young people. This translation has been carried out by Kirsti Spaven and is published with the financial support of NORLA.

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Modern Theories of Money: The Nature and Role of Money in Capitalist Economies
This book unites diverse heterodox traditions in the study of endogenous money - which until now have been confined to their own academic quarters - and explores their similarities and differences from both sides of the Atlantic.Bringing together perspectives from post-Keynesians, Circuitists and the Dijon School, the book continues the tradition of Keynes's and Kalecki's analysis of a monetary production economy, emphasising the similarities between the various approaches, and expanding the analytical breadth of the theory of endogenous money. The authors open new avenues for monetary research in order to fuel a renewed interest in the nature and role of money in capitalist economies, which is, the authors argue, one of the most controversial, and therefore fascinating, areas of economics.Providing new theoretical and empirical grounds for the construction of a general, policy oriented theory of money, this thought-provoking collection will appeal to academics, researchers and students interested in monetary economics. It will also be welcomed by monetary policymakers and central bank officials.
