Wakefield Press Pierre Mac Orlan - Mademoiselle Bambu
Mademoiselle Bambù is Pierre Mac Orlan’s take on the spy novel, written and expanded between 1932 and 1966. Set in Hamburg, London, Palermo, Brest and other ports of call in the anxious Europe of the 1920s and 1930s, Mademoiselle Bambù tells the tales of three secret agents: the melancholic adventurer and accidental spy, Captain Hartmann; his enigmatic mistress from Naples (and a double agent for the Germans), Signorina Bambù; and the sinister Père Barbançon, who retires from his life of espionage and murder to eke out his troubled days in an aptly named “Boarding House of Usher,” where shadows are as likely to strangle a man as they are to haunt him. Like all of Mac Orlan’s novels, Mademoiselle Bambù is less a novel than a barometer of societal unease, crippling melancholy and dark humor. Pierre Mac Orlan (1882–1970) was a prolific writer of absurdist tales, adventure novels, flagellation erotica and essays, as well as the composer of a trove of songs made famous by the likes of Juliette Gréco. A member of both the Académie Goncourt and the Collège de ’Pataphysique, Mac Orlan was admired by everyone from Raymond Queneau and Boris Vian to André Malraux and Guy Debord.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Composition of Worlds: Interviews with Pierre Charbonnier
In this autobiographical reflection, the distinguished anthropologist Philippe Descola looks back on his intellectual career and examines both the central themes of his work and the key questions that have shaped anthropological debates over the past forty years. A student of Lévi-Strauss, Descola conducted ethnographic research among the Achuar of the upper Amazon in the late 1970s, focusing on how native societies relate to their environment. In this book he sheds fresh light on the evolution of his thinking from structuralism to an anthropology beyond the human, on the critique of the modern separation between nature and society, and above all on the genesis and scope of his major work Beyond Nature and Culture. This synthesis of the ways in which humans view their relationships with non-humans proposes four schemas for the ‘composition of worlds’ (animism, naturalism, totemism, analogism) that characterize our ways of inhabiting the earth. Presented in the form of an extended conversation with Pierre Charbonnier, this book is both a lucid introduction to the work of one of the most original anthropologists writing today and an impassioned plea for ontologies that are more accommodating of the diversity of beings.

Peeters Publishers L'Unique seul importe: Hommage à Pierre Magnard

Transcript Verlag Pierre Rosanvallon′s Political Thought – Interdisciplinary Approaches
The work of Pierre Rosanvallon has increasingly found itself at the center of debates in democratic and political theory - although only few of his numerous monographs have thus far been translated from French. This interdisciplinary volume, the first comprehensive collection on his political thought in English, seeks to lay the groundwork for the study of this eminent political thinker and historian. Following a hitherto untranslated opening essay by Rosanvallon, the chapters - written from a variety of disciplinary perspectives including political theory, political science, philosophy, and history - cover a wide range of topics from the history of democracy to sovereignty, populism, and the function of the press in liberal democratic regimes.

Editions Norma Pierre Chareau. Volume 1: Biographie. Expositions. Mobilier.
Creator and architect of the emblematic Maison de verre in Paris, Pierre Chareau left behind a rich and coherent body of work, a "Chareau style" that places him as much in the modernist movement as in avant-garde thinking that embraces a world of new forms and materials. This first volume looks back at his biography, his decisive encounters with artistic movements such as cubism and primitive arts, and with leading figures such as Nicolas de Staël, Jeanne Bucher, Jacques Lipchitz, Pablo Picasso, Rose Adler, Max Jacob, Jean Lurçat and Rob Mallet-Stevens, who remained loyal to him throughout his short life. It traces his career, from his beginnings as a draughtsman at Waring & Gillow to his emergence as an independent designer; it details his participation in the Salons d'automne, the Salons des artistes décorateurs, the Groupe des 5 and the UAM, which set the tone for the modernity that thrilled the rest of the world; his work on Marcel L'Herbier's film sets; and his departure for the United States in 1940. It also introduces us to the collector and gallery owner, surrounded by artists such as Braque, Ernst, Gris, Léger, Lurçat, Masson, Modigliani, Motherwell and de Staël. The boutique he set up with his wife Dollie, on rue du Cherche-Midi, exhibits not only his own works but also the creations they produced: fabrics by Hélène Henry, rugs by Jean Burkhalter and Charchoune... Richly illustrated with almost 500 visuals, this first volume offers a complete overview of Dollie's furniture and lighting production, drawing on several iconographic collections (Musée des arts décoratifs, Paris, Moma, New York). Text in French.

Edinburgh University Press Pierre Batcheff and Stardom in 1920s French Cinema
This book is the first major study of a French silent cinema star. It focuses on Pierre Batcheff, a prominent popular cinema star in the 1920s, the French Valentino, best-known to modern audiences for his role as the protagonist of the avant-garde film classic Un chien andalou. Unlike other stars, he was linked to intellectual circles, especially the Surrealists. The book places Batcheff in the context of 1920s popular cinema, with specific reference to male stars of the period. It analyses the tensions he exemplifies between the 'popular' and the 'intellectual' during the 1920s, as cinema - the subject of intense intellectual interest across Europe - was racked between commercialism and 'art'. A number of the major films are studied in detail: Le Double amour (Epstein, 1925), Feu Mathias Pascal (L'Herbier, 1925), Education de prince (Diamant-Berger, 1927), Le Joueur d'echecs (Bernard, 1927), La Sirene des tropiques (Etievant and Nalpas, 1927), Les Deux timides (Clair, 1928), Un chien andalou (Bunuel, 1929), Monte-Cristo (Fescourt, 1929), and Baroud (Ingram, 1932). Key features: *The first major study of a French silent cinema star. *Provides an in-depth analysis of star performance. *Includes extensive appendices of documents from popular cinema magazines of the period.

Thames & Hudson Ltd The Private World of Yves Saint Laurent & Pierre Bergé
The star pieces from fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent's art collection – including works by Cézanne, Picasso, Mondrian and Matisse – have been unveiled in the Grand Palais, Paris, ahead of what auctioneers have dubbed the art ‘sale of the century.’Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé amassed the collection together before the designer’s death in June 2008. The works, which had adorned the pair’s Paris flats, the Chateau Gabriel in Normandy and their home in Morocco, include antiquities, Old Master and 19th-century paintings and drawings, Art Deco pieces and European furniture and art. Now Pierre Bergé has decided to sell the entire collection. It’s the end of an era and the sale has already excited enormous interest and speculation. This book shows, for the first time, the collection in situ in the pair’s homes. Although some pieces have been photographed separately in the past, they have never been photographed together, making this beautifully produced book the ultimate record of one of the 20th century’s great collections.

D Giles Ltd Jennifer Bartlett & Pierre Bonnard: In and Out of the Garden
This is an exploration of two artists' creative dialogue with gardens and nature: the French post-impressionist painter Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) and the contemporary American artist Jennifer Bartlett (b. 1941). Both were avid gardeners, and gardens, especially the ones they created for themselves, had a lifelong influence on both artists' works. Garden views from both inside the house and the outside became become a defining subject. This volume brings together over 45 paintings, drawings, and prints by Bonnard and Bartlett. Gardens are a recurrent theme throughout Bonnard's oeuvre, from the early days of Le Clos, the Bonnard summer home in the Dauphine, and his first garden at Vernonnet, west of Paris, to his final home, Le Bosquet near Cagnes, which became his favorite place to paint and from which he seldom traveled. Jennifer Bartlett emerged in the mid-1970s to become one of the leading American artists of her time, and one of the first female painters of her generation to be both commercially successful and critically acclaimed. Since the 1990s, Bartlett has been spending her summers in a small cottage near the beach in Amagansett, on Long Island's East End. Like Bonnard's paintings of gardens, Bartlett's In the Garden series continues to reveal its true urgency through of the artist's relationship to nature and dialogue with the many languages in painterly history.

Editions Norma Pierre Chareau. Volume 2.: Biographie. Expositions. Mobilier.
Pierre Chareau, aménagements et architecture is an unprecedented synthesis of almost 80 interior architecture projects (1908-1938), both private and public, and his architectural projects (1925-1950). It reveals the evolution of Pierre Chareau's approach to interior design, from his beginnings as a decorator integrating his furniture into existing spaces, to the advent, over the course of his projects, of a resolutely architectural approach to space, in which furniture comes to life and becomes architecture in its own right. Listing all of these projects, it provides a detailed, illustrated analysis of twenty-five of them, most of which were commissioned by three families: the Dalsaces, the Bernheims and the Dreyfus. This second volume reveals the designer's long-term commitment to architecture. It looks back at his involvement in the CIAM, the Société des architectes modernes and the Rassemblement des architectes, as well as his collaboration with the magazine L'Architecture d'aujourd'hui. It offers a critical analysis of Pierre Chareau's work as an architect, deciphering the 13 projects he worked on in France from 1923 to 1938, and in the United States from 1945 to 1950, from Djemil Anik's cottage to Robert Motherwell's studio in East Hampton. Finally, this book offers an in-depth analysis of the Glass House. By drawing up a portrait of Jean Dalsace and his wife Annie, it helps us to understand the central role played by those who commissioned the project. It looks back at the architectural and societal context of the time, explaining the importance of light and hygiene in the Maison de verre. The building site and its vicissitudes are described, followed by a description of the main principles behind the design of the house, and an analysis of its volumes and spaces. Text in French.
