Barbara von Barghahn is Professor of Art History at George Washington University and a specialist in the art history of Portugal, Spain, and their colonial dominions, as well as Flanders (1400-1800). In 1993, she was conferred O Grão Comendador in the Portuguese Order of Prince Henry the Navigator. She has spent nearly a decade completing research about Jan van Eyck's diplomatic visits to the Iberian Peninsula. This manuscript investigates Van Eyck's patronage by the Crown of Portugal and his role as diplomat-painter of the Duchy of Burgundy following his first voyage to Lisbon in 1428-1429 when he painted two portraits of Infanta Isabella, who became the third wife of Philip the Good in 1430. New portrait identifications are provided in the Ghent Altarpiece (1432) and its iconographical prototype, the lost Fountain of Life. These altarpieces are analyzed with regard to King João I's conquest of Ceuta, achieved by his sons who were hailed as an"illustrious generation." Strong family ties between the dynastic houses of Avis and Lancaster explain Lusitania 's sustained fascination with Arthurian lore and the Grail quest. Several chapters of this book are overlaid with a chivalric veneer. A second "secret mission" to Portugal in 1437 by Jan van Eyck is postulated and this diplomatic visit is related to Prince Henrique the Navigator's expedition to Tangier and King Duarte's attempts to forge an alliance with Alfonso V of Aragon. Late Eyckian commissions are reviewed in light of this ill-fated crusade and additional new portraits are identified. The most significant artist of Renaissance Flanders appears to have been patronized as much by the House of Avis as by the Duchy of Burgundy.

This is the first monograph on the life and work of the Czech born British architect Kaplicky (1937-2009). It is a fully comprehensive work based on a decade of research and is a distinctive portrait of one of the most distinguished architects and designers of the 20th and 21st centuries. At the same time it is an exploration into historical events, which influenced a number of talented artists, writers and designers, some of whom were forced, like Kaplicky, to emigrate from Czechoslovakia in order to expand their skills and search for beauty through living in freedom in democratic countries. After immigrating to the United Kingdom in 1968, Kaplicky applied his imagination and diligence and enhanced his skills and aptitude, gaining admiration and respect following the cofounding of the innovative Future Systems studio in 1979. With his wide-ranging architectural and design oeuvre Kaplicky affirmed greatness of his immense talent and ability. The author was a friend, through their shared émigré life experience, giving him broad insight into the inception and realisation of this book. He searched family archives and referenced Kaplickys private diaries. The author drew on everybody who had something important to say and gathered written memories and interviews from Kaplickys friends, colleagues, partners and clients, which form the cornerstone of the monograph. His aim was to write a book that would mirror Kaplickys life and work, a representation made up not only from the authors own point of view, but also according to others with whom Kaplicky had been in contact during his life. The book has many voices and has a kaleidoscopic format, which truly explores Kaplickys complex personality and his creativity. It does not overwhelm with excessive information, but builds a picture of the man behind his designs and tells his story. The author presents Kaplickys personal side with sensitivity and explains his dramatic decision-making.

The now forgotten East German particle physicist Hubertus M. Frassek believed in the existence of incredibly small black holes. He dreamt of travelling through Southern Germany in a mobile laboratory in order to prove his theories. Why Southern Germany? No one knows anymore. Decades later, Jan Köchermann (*1967) brought this dream to life again. Jan Le Witt and George Him were a comparative rarity, a graphic design duo; signing their work as 'Lewitt-Him' they brought an innovative use of colour, imaginative abstraction and symbolism to commercial design. Both Polish by birth, they arrived in London in 1937, sponsored by the Victoria and Albert Museum and Lund Humphries. They established their reputation for fine poster work in World War II, and for their exhibition work with their much loved Guinness Clock at the Festival of Britain. In Poland their illustrations for Lokomotywa helped make it a children's classic and they continued with book illustration throughout their partnership. Of very different temperaments and artistic interests the partnership lasted some twenty years, to January 1955, when Le Witt left to develop his career as an artist. Him continued his commitment to graphic design - illustration, exhibitions and general commercial work - most remarkable of which were his witty illustrations marrying Stephen Potter's texts for Schweppes - 'Schweppshire', one of the longest lasting advertisement campaigns. Born in 1360, Jan Zizka was a formidable figure whose life and military career was set amidst the whirlwind of monumental revolutions - military, religious, political and social - that engulfed medieval Europe in the 14th and 15th centuries. The leader of Bohemia's Hussite Revolution, the first of the religious wars during the Protestant Reformation, he was a forward-thinking military genius whose record is virtually unmatched. De mysticus Jan van Ruusbroec (1293-1381) wordt vaak hemelhoog geprezen, ook internationaal. Zo kwam Cuthbert Butler tot de conclusie dat er "zeker...geen groter mystiek schrijver is geweest." Het is dan ook verrassend dat over Ruusbroecs mystieke leer als zodanig geen omvattende studie voorhanden is. Dat deze lacune aangevuld moet worden, is des te vanzelfsprekender nu de kritische editie van Ruusbroecs werken volledig is: Jan van Ruusbroec Opera omnia (1981-2006). Het leidend beginsel van onderhavig boek is, dat de mysticus zelf in de allereerste plaats aan het woord moet komen, en niet de commentator. Bovendien bestaat de kern van Ruusbroecs geschriften in het beschrijven van een bewustwording - de bewustwording van de aanwezigheid van een Ander -, met het gevolg dat enkel door de close reading van het gehele werk en door passende tekstanalyses zijn opvattingen van de mystieke eenwording met God te voorschijn komt. Daar echter in deze studie een mystieke figuur en zijn literair werk centraal staan, wordt in de eerste twee hoofdstukken, steeds op basis van hetgeen de mystici zelf vertellen, gepreciseerd wat hen essentieel kenmerkt, wat zij ervaren en hoe zij ervaren, waarom zij schrijven en op welke manier. Het blijkt eveneens dat deze weg niet noodzakelijk gevolgd dient te worden: het contemplatieve leven is geen lineair vooruitgang-maken maar veeleer een spiraalsgewijs meegenomen-worden. In hoofdstuk V - "Het mystieke eenzijn met God" - komt het hart van Ruusbroecs mystieke ervaring tot uitdrukking en schittert natuurlijk het meest zijn uniek talent om weer te geven wat niet gezien maar wel gevoeld wordt. Het belangrijkste punt hier is, dat voor de mysticus de meest gevorderde ervaring van het eenzijn met God bestaat in het beleven van zowel "eenheid" als "vereniging", van zowel "rusten" als "werken". Anders gezegd, het volkomen eenzijn met God wordt helemaal niet beschouwd als een uiteindelijke versmelting. Het is, integendeel, door het blijvende samenspel te ervaren van zulke verschillende aspecten als "eenheid" en "vereniging" dat de mysticus ten volle een is met de Ander. Uit de complexe natuur van de volmaakte mystieke staat volgt dat Ruusbroec de volgroeide mysticus voorstelt als de "ghemeyne mensche" die "geheel in God is en geheel in zichzelf." De laatste twee hoofdstukken van het boek gaan over Ruusbroecs houding ten aanzien van de natuurlijke mystiek. Daar hij te maken kreeg met een aantal van zijn tijdgenoten die naar eigen zeggen "contempleerden zonder (Gods) genade", voelde Ruusbroec zich geroepen om met hen in discussie te treden. In hoofdstuk VI blijkt dat hij niet enkel hun methode - "inkeeren" - waardeert, maar eveneens de uitkomst ervan: "zij voelen de enkelvoudigheid van hun wezen dat in Gods wezen hangt." In hoofdstuk VII komt echter ook Ruusbroecs kritiek op de natuurlijke contemplatie ter sprake. Deze richt zich voornamelijk op twee punten. De contemplatief die zich zonder de genade naar binnen keert, "blijft rusten in zichzelf" en hij zal de dehumaniserende gevolgen ondergaan van een contemplatie waarin men "geen anderheid voelt."

In 1500 Malay Malacca was the queen city of the Malay Archipelago, one of the great trade centers of the world. Its rulers, said to be descendents of the ancient line of Srivijaya, dominated the lands east and west of the straits. The Portuguese, unable to compete in the marketplace, captured the town. They were followed a hundred years later by the Dutch who, lured in their turn by Malacca as symbol of the wealth and luxury of the east, were to rule this port city for more than a hundred and fifty years. It proved to be, in many ways, an empty conquest. Portuguese and Dutch governments imposed restrictions on Malacca’s trade, driving it to the newer ports in the north and south. Moreover, by the time the Dutch finally secured the town, they had established their own port at Batavia, in Java. Dutch Malacca was, by 1701, “a place of little trade.” Why then did the Dutch maintain their occupation of the port? Lewis draws on the extensive correspondence of the Dutch East India Company to examine the role the Dutch played as Malacca’s rulers in the eighteenth-century Malay world, arguing that their presence, though generally too weak to secure their own interests, disrupted the traditional political and economic organization of the Malay polities, contributing significantly to the disarray that beset the Malay world at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
