The result of an international interdisciplinary research project, this publication is the first comprehensive monograph of a ceramics factory in Lower Silesia, the Feinsteinzeugfabrik Julius Paul &Sohn in Bunzlau, active from 1893 to 1945. A particular challenge for the authors was the fact that no historic source material had survived, all the regional achives and librairies having been destroyed during the war. Only a few original documents, which withstood expulsion and flight, remained for evaluation. After the most thorough and wide-ranging researches, it became possible to reconstruct almost completely the factory''s whole output on the basis of over 6,000 Julius Paul ceramics scattered among more than forty museums, collections and private owners in Poland, Germany, Austria and Holland, and finally to publish the results. From the 16th century until well into the 18th century, the commedia dell'arte, a popular Italian type of improvised comic theatricals, cast its spell on a large and diverse audience. Here an exuberant joy of living was reflected in a portrayal of all aspects of life exaggerated with pomposity and humour. This book represents the first monograph on modern Norwegian photography from the 1970s to the present. It traces recent developments taking place in the four movements in photography: Subjectivism, Abstraction, Post-Modernism and Photorealism. Subjectivism reigned supreme in Norwegian photography until well into the 1980s. It was rooted in the principles that a photograph could not lie and had to reproduce reality. The early 1990s ushered in the dawn of Post-Modernism in Norwegian art. Photographs were no longer viewed as mirroring reality but rather as works whose meaning was context-related. The result of this shift in focus was an array of new possibilities for expression and new themes. The present book also shows the influences Norwegian artists and photographers from other countries exerted on each other, a tendency that also shows up in the many Norwegian photographers active internationally. Sculptor Claus Bury (b. 1946) has been enhancing public spaces in Germany for more than four decades with his monumental sculptures, which by now total more than 100. His canon of forms is comprised of geometric basic corpuses, such as squares and cubes, triangles and pyramids, rectangles, rhombuses and segments, which he employs in a contemporary Archaic style oriented on the antique structures of Egypt, Greece and Mexico. Bury's sculptures are almost always accessible, and the contingent changes in perspective do not only thematise the basic requirements of the human experience of form and space; they also articulate people's experience in their surroundings, impressively underpinning Hegel's theory that the world has a 'house character' and that man is fundamentally a domestic creature. Otto Prutscher (1880-1949) was an architect and a designer in all applied arts media, as well as an exhibition designer, teacher and member of all the important arts and crafts movements, from the Secession to the Wiener Werkstätte and the Werkbund. The MAK - Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna - possesses a comprehensive graphic bequest and many significant objects from Prutscher's design oeuvre. Selected examples of Prutscher's creative work document his long-lasting influential role as a designer and artistic adviser for decorative art companies from Johann Loetz to Thonet. There are many ways to perceive and interpret contemporary craft objects - for instance, as works of representational art in materials like ceramics, glass, textile, metal or wood, or as functional, handmade everyday objects. In this publication, the editors have invited different voices in craft theory to investigate the perception of contemporary craft as a particular discourse and aesthetic vocabulary. According to the editors, contemporary crafts can benefit from being discussed as representations of reality that do not rely on the concept of autonomy. As such, neither do they rely on the conventional dualism between aesthetic objects and everyday things. The authors investigate the possibility to perceive craft objects from perspectives that relate to the aesthetic tradition of materialism.

Gisbert Stach's (b. 1963) monograph Jewellery and Experiment presents a multifaceted opus from twenty-five years of gold- and silversmithing. In his oeuvre the primarily conceptual artist combines jewellery with video, photography and performance. One focus of his work deals with processes of transformation and experiment - pieces disappear through chemical dissolution, and form is determined by agencies of growth in nature. Stach works with means of alienation and irritation. Ground amber serves as pigment, which he works into jewellery pieces in the form of fish fingers, sliced bread or schnitzel. A further characteristic of his work is the performative act, for example when brooches are pelted with knives. Fotosommer Stuttgart, the now internationally established forum for contemporary photography began eight years ago as an exhibition project organised by committed photographers. As the largest festival in the German southwest of national and international renown it provides a survey of the current international photo scene as well as of regional tendencies. The festival's award show encompasses a broad spectrum of works, ranging from artistic to documentary photography. From over 500 submissions for the international competition the jury chose the works of 31 photographers, including the three prize winners of the Süd-westbank Fotosommer awards. Antoine Leperlier (b. 1953) is a trained visual artist and painter. He has been working as a freelance glass artist since the 1980s, developing his own glass technique based on casting and the lost-wax technique to create large-format translucent and painterly blocks.In this survey of work spanning more than 40 years, skulls float, snakes are frozen alive, and what looks like abstract watercolours are preserved forever. Time stands still, the universe speaks. His works explore transience and memory, past and future; he stops time, makes moments eternal. A hundred years after the death of Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920), the time has come to re-examine the artist’s controversial place in Modernist art history. By examining a select group of outstanding originals, this recent study celebrates his best work through advances in our understanding of the painter’s techniques. This focused analysis of the artist, which centres on his maturity as a sculptor and painter, includes characteristic examples across Modigliani’s major genres, especially portraiture and female nudes. It is argued that Modigliani was the last great Italian Old Master, moving as he did between Renaissance and Modernism. Lace was a passion of Leopold Iklé (1838-1922), scion of a Hamburg textile dynasty who successfully produced machine-made embroidery over the course of the industrial boom in St. Gallen around 1900. He exported to England, France and the United States, among other places, at a time when St. Gallen was the market leader in the lace industry. Iklé's collection of handmade European bobbin lace and needlepoint from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century originally served as inspiration for his firm's textile designers. Through his passion for collecting, however, it quickly surpassed the practical demands of a simple pattern collection, and in 1904 he donated it to the Textile Museum St. Gallen. The !Xun & Khwe Art Project was developed in 1993 in a refugee camp in Schmidtsdrift, South Africa. After being party to the struggles for liberation from colonial rule, endangered groups of San people from Namibia and Angola were relocated there. They eventually found their final home in the self-governing South African community of Platfontein. The Tekkieh Moaven is a significant religious monument in Kermanshah and one of the most important national memorials in Iran. Following the building’s destruction in the early 20th century, it was rebuilt and furnished with exclusive tiles, the focal point of this publication. Since 1975, it has also been a popular museum visited by hundreds of thousands of people every year. The tiles illustrate the fascinating world of art in the Persian empire and Islamic era and are distinguished by colourful illustrations featuring floral, calligraphic, and also figurative motifs. The Hanau City Map project by Claus Bury relates to the new city of Hanau, which was formed from 1597 on and is characterised by its strictly geometric pattern of streets and star-shaped ramparts. The walk-on granite sculpture on the square directly next to the Walloon-Dutch church references the city map engraved in copper in 1632 by Matthäus Merian and revitalises Hanau’s historical 17th century topography through its relief-like recesses and encompassing seating areas. Jorunn Veiteberg has been wearing jewellery with a passion ever since she was a teenager. Covering nearly 50 years, her collection contains some 550 items, including work by 210 jewellery artists from 30 different countries, some by unknown craftspeople, some even mass-produced. Conventional forms live side by side with experimental objects, and political statements mingle with humorous asides. It is this collection that makes up The Jewellery Box. How Many Is One encapsulates one of the fundamental questions at the core of art and design. This issue is highly pertinent to jewellery design as a language that seeks form through which to articulate ideas. The oeuvre of Deganit Stern Schocken (b. 1947) has delved into the socio-political question of place, creating works in which text is incorporated as an integral part of the object; in the process the artist has adhered to the classical language of jewellery while employing state-of-the-art technologies. The book explores the architectural-planning aspect in Stern Schocken's jewellery. While each object stands in its own right (like a building), it is also part of a system (the city). The trial-and-error process of casting and the notion of 'value' also play an important role in the artist's work, which alludes to local society and Israeli reality.

In 2008 and 2013 the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts in Leipzig presented two representative inventory publications under the title Vessel / Sculpture. German and International Ceramics since 1946, which attracted great interest from across the globe and were regarded as standard reference works. This third volume continues the series, against a backdrop of a renewed and extensive increase of modern studio ceramics in the museum's collection. As in the previous publications, the objects in the book enter into aesthetic dialogues, thus facilitating interesting perspectives in the development of artistic ceramics up to the present day. In doing so it becomes clear how ceramic objects are developing from a servient-functional gesture into ever consistent autonomous artworks yet without necessarily losing the vessel theme. Ruudt Peters (b. 1950) is a pioneering conceptual jewellery artist who challenges traditional definitions of adornment by pushing the boundaries of context, wearability, material and presentation. On the occasion of his retrospective exhibition he gives the first complete overview of his forty-four-year oeuvre. All series of his work are comprehensively presented in texts and photographs of objects and portraits. Many previously unpublished views of installations and exhibitions as well as numerous drawings and sketches enhance the review, all complemented by video clips that can be accessed via QR codes, which provide the reader with short movies featuring background information about Peters's work, and those who wear his pieces and the art of jewellery. The last chapter of the catalogue will be dedicated to Peter's latest, hitherto unpublished series. Thanks to a conscious reduction in form and colour, the ceramics by the Swiss artist Sonja Duo-Meyer (b. 1953) unfurl incredible expressive power. Their flowing silhouettes appear almost meditative, fixed points emerge in the light asymmetry of their forms, and a sophisticated play on light and shade develops. Surfaces, material, corpora and technique are interwoven through a minimalistic design concept that celebrates stillness and the concept of the void. Photographs of objects as well as exhibition views show vessels, objects and wall installations from 1992 to 2017.
