Duff In line with theories of National Socialism as a continuation and radicalization of existing trends, this innovative study interprets Nazi criminal law as a racist (anti-Semitic), nationalist (“Germanic”), and totalitarian construct that continues and develops further the authoritarian and anti-liberal tendencies of German criminal law of the fin-de-siècle and the Weimar Republic. This is borne out by a systematic analysis of writings by relevant authors that focuses first and foremost on the texts, which speak for themselves, and is less concerned with morally judging the scholars who produced them. Furthermore, the study shares novel insights on the reception of German (National Socialist) criminal law in Latin America. The aforementioned continuity existed not only between the Nazi period and the eras preceding it, but also between National Socialism and the period that followed (the Bonn Republic). In short, National Socialist criminal law neither came out of nowhere nor disappeared completely after 1945. Current identitarian attempts by the so-called Neue Rechte (“New Right”) to reconstruct the Germanic myth represent yet another continuation that links seamlessly to National Socialist ideology.

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is increasingly viewed as one of the most significant ways of dealing with greenhouse gas emissions. Escape, Escapism, Escapology: American Novels of the Early Twenty-First Century identifies and explores what has emerged as perhaps the central theme of 21st-century American fiction: the desire to escape—from the commodified present, from directionless history, from moral death—at a time of inescapable globalization. The driving question is how to find an alternative to the world within the world, at a time when utopian and messianic ideals have lost their power to compel belief. John Limon traces the American answer to that question in the writings of some of the most important authors of the last two decades—Chabon, Diaz, Foer, Eggers, Donoghue, Groff, Ward, Saunders, and Whitehead, among others—and finds that it always involves the faux utopian freedom and pseudo-messianic salvation of childhood. Drawing on the letters of the Apostle Paul and the work of philosophical thinkers such as Søren Kierkegaard, Barbera explores numerous aspects of faithful living: from religion, original sin, and tests of faith, to the power of prayer and even the concept of atheism. In particular, Barbera formulates a postulate drawn from Augustine of Hippo's Confessions: God is not bound by time. The person of faith, however, is enslaved by time. Augustine’s expression “faith seeking understanding” stakes the claim, but the mode of faith and the end of faith are inherently contradictory. The faithful person its in pursuit, choking.
