Written primarily for 16-19 year old students, this primer aims to extend students' knowledge and inspire them to take their school-level learning further. It explores topics that are familiar from the curriculum and also introduces new ideas, giving students a first taste of the study of biology beyond school-level and demonstrating how concepts frequently encountered at school are relevant to and applied in current research. This is the ideal text to support students who are considering making the transition from studying biology at school to university. This Oxford Biology Primer will introduce students to the field of genomics and its applications. From the early days of the Human Genome Project, sequencing technology has rapidly developed and is now cheaper and more accessible than ever before. The resulting pervasive nature of these technologies make them more likely to be experienced by people as patients, consumers and citizens. The primer introduces the basic principles of genomics and then uses these to consider human genetics, through examples of some of the rare diseases linked to single genes. The impact of these rare diseases is far-reaching and the knowledge gained through genome sequencing is proving invaluable in their diagnosis. Genome sequencing is revolutionising the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and the primer introduces students to some of the key breakthroughs which have taken place in recent years. These include the identification of specific genes indicating cancer risk, and the sequencing of tumours throughout treatment to identify further mutations and modify treatment accordingly. The primer aims to address a number of the ethical issues which are raised by this rapidly-growing area of biology. Students are challenged to consider some of the decisions they may need to make relating to these technologies in their own lives, and are given opportunities to explore different aspects of these issues in a way which allows discussion to be both informed and meaningful. Many of the major diseases which impact the global population are caused by parasites, which come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Parasite genome sequencing makes it possible to develop both new medicines, and new treatments such as gene drive systems to wipe out disease-causing mosquito populations. For many years, our views of classification and evolution have been based on observational techniques going back to Darwin and Linnaeus. Focusing on human evolution, the primer will open students' eyes to the ways in which genome sequencing is being used to reveal evolutionary links that have never before been recognised, and to elucidate the way humans spread out of Africa across the world. Students are not always aware of the role technological developments play in enabling the progress of science. The final chapter delves into how genome sequencing technologies have developed, considering both the speed of change in the technology, its implications for usefulness, availability and cost, and the growing issue of big data and how it can be manipulated. A distinguished scholar and the well-known author of The Rise of the West and Plagues and Peoples, William McNeill has won widespread recgonition for his ideas on the role of disease in history. By comparing the biological organisms that compete with human beings for food or feed directly upon them ("microparasites") with those people or groups who seize goods or compel services from other human beings ("macroparasites"), Professor McNeill shows how changes in the patterns of parasitism have affected human populations in different regions of the world throughout history.The author identifies three landmarks of human ecological history when systematic changes in the balances between microparasites and macroparasites occured: the advance of our ancestors to the apex of the food chain, the human penetration of the colder and dryer zones of the earth, and the establishment of the agriculture. In an espeically revealing discussion of this last landmark, he shows how human efforts to achieve successful farming increased human vulnerability to infection. Irrigation and the use of the plow created sewage and water supply problems that in turn brought on new and intensified forms of parasites. In addition, food harvested and store for use throughout the year became vulnerable to rats, mice, insects, and molds.These advances not only increased the number and variety of microparasites; they also opened the way for macroparasites, that is, the transfer of food by those who produce it to those who produce it to those who consume it without themselves having worked in the fields. What then began as a symbiotic relationship quickly became an exploitative one. As the author points out, the high yield and dependability of irrigation plowing tied farmers to the land quite effectually and made such populations easy targets for tax and rent collectors. Hence human society in its civilized form came to be fundamentally divided between hosts and parasites, the ruled and the rulers.Against this conceptual background of the enveloping balances between microparasites and macroparasites that have limited human access to food and energy, Profesor McNeill draws a new historical picture of the human condition. Your Spine, Your Yoga is arguably the first book that looks at the spine from both the Western anatomical/biomechanical point of view and the modern yoga perspective. Boot Camp is, in essence, a continuation of the first book in this new series. Whilst all the action in the first book takes place during the Easter holidays, Boot Camp largely occurs over the week-long, half-term holiday. The author includes a hugely entertaining blend of gripping action, suspense, drama and delightful humour, which is sure to captivate and enthral the reader. With Joel's mum and Detective Smith newly engaged and a large wedding planned for the Summer, Joel is allowed to choose the family holiday destination for the half-term break. Naturally of course, Joel selects Morisco in Spain where his beloved Maite lives, even though she will no longer recognise him now that her memory of the Kairos has been erased. Joel is upset to find that Magee, the raven angel assigned to protect him, and with whom he had formed a strong bond, has been replaced by a pompous, wet-behind-the-ears rookie jay! The story develops in Spain with a group of young girls on a minibus, which is hijacked and includes, of all people, not only Maite but also the Crown Princess of Asturias, heir to the throne of Spain! Joel takes a massive risk in an effort to rescue Maite, along with her friends, and his life hangs in the balance as he attempts to leap onto the bus through the Vista in Heaven. The Vista is the transport gateway that the Kairos children use between Heaven and anywhere in the world, whilst the Fugue is the gateway to and from their own home base, which in Joel's case is the grassy plateau called Zionica, at Grandad's smallholding. There are again entertaining and humorous instances of ambiguous banter between Joel, Smith and the jay angel, with Smith thinking Joel's words are meant for him, whilst Joel is unaware that Smith is even listening. Joel ends up gate-crashing the disciplinary hearing in Heaven, instigated against Maggi and Magee by Maguff. More action follows at the palace in Spain during a masked ball where yet again Joel comes to the rescue of Maite, who is still oblivious of the close relationship they had at Easter. A tragedy, followed by revelations from Heaven and then a surprise visitor when Joel returns home, all add to the fast-paced adventures of Boot Camp, as Joel is amazed to discover that he is being trained and has actually been the subject of another Kairos child's mission! Again, through a fascinating, fictional story, perplexing true-life mysteries and issues are succinctly explained with wonderful clarity, unravelling centuries of false beliefs and ideas that have been responsible for untold trouble in the world. Many adults have, over the years, searched, often in vain, to comprehend such mysteries and yet the author of the Kairos explains these so simply that even children could understand. That this is a page-turner, there can be no doubt. Indeed, one could almost believe that the author had herself been to Heaven and visited the throne room of the Creator of the universe. Could the author actually have been a Kairos child herself? For that matter, could you? The third Kairos book is eagerly awaited.

In the history of Nazi concentration camps, and particularly labour camps, there is probably no place that bears the same stigma of wretchedness as 'Dora-Mittelbau' at Nordhausen. Located in the Harz mountains in central Germany, next to a quarry tunnel system in the Kohnstein mountain, it served to house thousands of slave workers for an underground factory known as the Mittelwerk, which produced three of Germany's best-known secret weapons: the V1 flying bomb, the V2 rocket and jet engines for the Me 262 and Ar 234 fighters. With over 20 kilometres of underground galleries, it was the largest underground factory in the world. Many of the inmates died in indescribable misery, being forced to extend the tunnels with meagre equipment and under ghastly conditions, sometimes not seeing daylight for weeks on end. Started in August 1943, Dora-Mittelbau in due course became the centre of a whole complex of underground factories in the Nordhausen area, with several subsidiary camps being set up. In all, of some 60,000 prisoners sent there between 1943 and 1945, 20,000 were driven to extinction to implement Nazi Germany's secret weapons programme, but they laboured late and in vain, for the products they yielded had little impact on the war. The V1 and V2 are the only weapons which cost more lives in production than in deployment: far more people died producing them than were killed from their impact in London, Antwerp and elsewhere. The history of Nordhausen, already gruesome in itself, ended in a crescendo of violence when, in the final weeks of the war, the surviving inmates were evacuated from the camps in death marches . One group of over a thousand men then became victim of one of the most horrendous of all Nazi atrocities. On April 13, 1945, just outside the town of Gardelegen, their SS camp guards, helped by local troops and Hitlerjugend, locked the prisoners in a big barn and set fire to the inside, burning those inside, killing them with hand-grenades, and shooting anyone who tried to escape from the burning, smoke-filled building. A total of 1,016 men died as a result. When discovered by American troops two days later, Gardelegen quickly became known as the site of one most notorious war crimes committed by the Nazis. In this book, Karel Margry recounts the history of Nordhausen concentration camp and of the Gardelegen massacre in full detail. Both stories are illustrated with unique Then and Now comparison photographs. Every once in a while a long-forgotten work emerges from the shadows of the Middle Ages to be published in English for the first time. This is the first complete English translation of the prose chronicle named for the abbey of Santa Maria della Ferraria. It was written during the reign of Frederick II, Italy's greatest medieval ruler, early in the thirteenth century about the Normans and Swabians in southern Italy. Based in part on the work of Falco of Benevento and others, it complements our knowledge of a complex era of Italian history. The identity of its author, a monk in an abbey in the Volturno Valley near Naples, is not known. Discovered in the nineteenth century, his manuscript - which reposes in quiet dignity in a library in Bologna - brings to life the figures who forged the Kingdom of Sicily. First published (in its original Latin) in Naples in 1888 in a limited edition of just 275 numbered copies, the chronicle long remained virtually unknown. As a rarity found in just a few library collections, its very existence was something of an 'open secret' among specialized scholars. The Apulia of the title is not simply Puglia, which in the Middle Ages extended from the heel of the Italian peninsula northward to Pescara and even Ancona, but southern Italy generally, embracing regions such as Basilicata and parts of Calabria. Although parts of the chronicle are drawn from earlier sources, the span of time from circa 1195 to 1228 is original, based on the monk's firsthand knowledge of the reign of Frederick II, who visited the abbey in 1223, when the chronicler probably met the monarch (the original Latin of the chronicle's last years was written in the present tense). Even for the Norman reigns of the twelfth century, it brings us a few details not found in the surviving codices of other chronicles. Ms Alio advances the theory that this medieval work, with its style conforming to more than one genre (chronicle, annal), its facts drawn from several sources, and its principal range (1096-1228) spanning several generations, could be considered the first history of the Kingdom of Sicily, which was founded in 1130. It is the last chronicle written in the Kingdom of Sicily during the reign of Frederick II to be published in English. As a scholarly work intended for use as a reference, this book contains over 400 informative end notes, five appendices, eight pages of maps and seven genealogical tables, along with numerous (black and white) photographs. It includes an introductory background chapter on the medieval history of southern Italy and its Greeks, Arabs, Lombards and Normans. Also included is an insightful introduction to the chronicle and its author (the longest essay ever published about it in English). Ms Alio's translation is faithful to the original Latin, yet fluid and understandable. Her native's knowledge of southern Italy and its people is evident on every page. This volume is a useful resource for researchers and an interesting excursion into the medieval world for armchair historians. Its publication was long overdue. The book is printed on acid-free paper.
