In the wake of 500 years of colonialism, the Caribbean archipelago remains to this day one of the world’s most profoundly fractured regions of the world. Spain, Germany, England, the Netherlands, and the United States claimed various parts of the island group, primarily to assert their economic interests. The resulting mosaic concealed the region’s own, non-Eurocentric culture and art. But, now, the social, political, and cultural dynamics are shifting. In partnership with the Basel H. Geiger Cultural Foundation, The Caribbean Art Initiative, which was founded in 2019 to raise international awareness of the rich Caribbean art scene, will present the first large-scale exhibition of contemporary Caribbean art by Caribbean curators in Basel, Switzerland. For the past twenty years, international donors have invested heavily in large-scale disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) programs, while, at the same time, transitional justice measures have proliferated, bringing truth, justice, and reparations to those recovering from state violence and civil war. Yet DDR programs are seldom deconstructed to discover whether they truly achieve their justice-related aims. Additionally, transitional justice mechanisms rarely articulate strategies for coordinating with DDR. Oil waste was everywhere—on the roads, in the rivers where they fished, and in the water that they used for bathing, cooking, and washing. Children became sick and died, cases of stomach cancer skyrocketed, and women miscarried or gave birth to children with congenital disorders. The American oil company Texaco—now part of Chevron—extracted its first barrel of crude oil from Amazonian Ecuador in 1972. It left behind millions of gallons of spilled oil and more than eighteen million gallons of toxic waste. In Crude, Ecuadorian lawyer and activist Pablo Fajardo gives a firsthand account of Texaco’s involvement in the Amazon as well as the ensuing legal battles between the oil company, the Ecuadorian government, and the region’s inhabitants. As a teenager, Fajardo worked in the Amazonian oil fields, where he witnessed the consequences of Texaco/Chevron’s indifference to the environment and to the inhabitants of the Amazon. Fajardo mobilized with his peers to seek reparations and in time became the lead counsel for UDAPT (Union of People Affected by Texaco), a group of more than thirty thousand small farmers and indigenous people from the northern Ecuadorian Amazon who continue to fight for reparations and remediation to this day.Eye-opening and galvanizing, Crude brings to light one of the least well-known but most important cases of environmental and racial injustice of our time.

Since 2014, CARTHA has provided a platform for critical thinking on architecture and society. Each year, CARTHA initiates research and publishes issues on a topic in its online magazine, which are then brought together in an annual book. In 2016, CARTHA was invited to participate in the Lisbon Architecture Triennale. Adopting the Triennale's topic, 'The Form of Form', the three issues that comprise CARTHA on the Form of Form explore the topic of form through different, yet complementary, lenses. The first issue, How to Learn Better, was edited by Bureau A and discusses pedagogical approaches to architecture. The second issue, The Architecture of the City: A Palimpsest, edited by Victoria Easton, Matilde Cassani, and Noura Al Sayeh, revisits and reinterprets Aldo Rossi's writings on the form of the city. Published during the Triennale, the third issue, Lisboa Paralela, was edited by the CARTHA editorial board and expands on urban forms by questioning the status quo of natural and social laws and speculating on these through essays and a design exercise by some of the most interesting voices of the current architectural scene.

The enormous metropolis, frequently shaken by seismic activity, is spread out under the gaze of Popocatéptl, over 5,000 meters high, and has itself encroached on the slopes of the Ajusco, a dormant volcano lying to the south.

This book presents a significant amount of structural, paleomagnetic and magnetic fabric data in the Central High Atlas (Morocco). The authors thoroughly described and analyzed the present-day structure of this intraplate chain through 22 of cross-sections, potential field data analysis and 3D reconstruction. In addition, the authors propose a palinspastic reconstruction of the structure of the basin at 100 Ma (i.e., post-extension and pre-compression) to finally evaluate its Mesozoic and Cenozoic geodynamic evolution.
