A number of narrow gauge railways can be found today in Saxony, eastern Germany, with commercial daily steam-hauled trains. These were once part of a much more extensive network of lines in the region, built to a gauge of 750 mm, which once totalled over 500 kilometres (311 miles) all operated originally by the Royal Saxon State Railway company, and later the federal government railway. After the Second World War some railway assets were claimed by the Soviet Union as reparations, and the area became part of the German Democratic Republic. Many of the lines that served small towns and villages in rural areas were by then in poor condition and closed in the 1960s. However, those that were still running when the Berlin Wall collapsed in 1989 are still working today, though now privatised, and have been joined by several other enthusiast-run museum railways reviving sections of lines closed earlier. With a fascinating selection of rare and previously unpublished images, John Woodhams offers a wonderful insight into these unusual and quirky reminders of the days of the steam.

The delightful decorations that characterize Pennsbury pottery have made it a favorite type of American wares since the pottery's origin in 1950 and a rapidly growing field of collectible interest today. This book presents the history of the family-run business in Pennsylvania with the maker's marks, complete listing of the patterns, reproduction of the 1959 catalog, and hundreds of color photographs of the pottery pieces. The German immigrant founders of the pottery works, the Below family, incorporated american nationalistic folk art designs such as the eagle and shield, as well as charming figures in Amish dress with Pennsylvania "Dutch" inscriptions and famous bird designs, into the decorations. the glazes combine cheerful colors on the characteristic beige backgrounds of the brown clay pottery. Tablewares predominate these useful and decorative wares that are recognized as American folk art forms. In the 1980s and early 1990s, Scotland was an excellent destination for the railway enthusiast. The many locomotive hauled trains running through splendid scenery, together with the surviving railway infrastructure and mechanical signalling, provided many fine photographic opportunities. My first railway visit to Scotland was on board The Fair Maid rail tour to Perth, behind Flying Scotsman in 1983\. The following year, I again travelled to Scotland, this time on the F & W Railtours The Skirl O' The Pipes 4, to Kyle of Lochalsh and Mallaig, my first visit to the Scottish Highlands. I had previously been travelling abroad for railways, but impressed by what I saw, I decided that I would quickly return to photograph the Scottish railway scene, before it changed too much. This was the start of a series of visits, each for one or two weeks, between 1984 and June 1991, covering the whole country. This book is a photographic record of the locomotives, trains and infrastructure of the railways of Scotland and the landscapes through which the trains ran, as recorded by my various cameras during the period of my visits.
