In 2003, Jorge Mario Múnera won the Latino and Latin American Art Forum Prize at Harvard University, which entitled him to produce and present an exhibit at Harvard’s David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies. Does Descartes belong to metaphysics? What do we mean when we say "metaphysics"? These questions form the point of departure for Jean-Luc Marion's study of Cartesian thought. Analyses of Descartes' notion of the "ego" and his idea of God show that if Descartes represents the fullest example of metaphysics, he nonetheless transgresses its limits. This book skillfully combines autobiographical stories with clear psychoanalytical theories. During her childhood, the author experienced the Holocaust and was left understandly traumatised by it. It was her desire to confront this trauma that led her to psychoanalysis. For decades, the coherence of psychoanalysis seemed to be threatened by the conflicting thinking of many psychoanalytical colleagues about trauma and trauma affect, and also about the influence of external reality on the psychic reality discovered by Freud. However, Marion Oliner counters this potential conflict with her innovative theoretical integration, combined with remarkable conceptual outcomes and treatment techniques.This book spans the author's work over the last fifteen years on the impact of external reality on psychic reality. During this period many analysts, especially in the English-speaking countries and Germany, where historic events loomed large in the lives of their patients, have turned from the exclusive emphasis on psychic reality to greater attention to the traumatic impact of external reality. Considering that this has led to a body of psychoanalytic writings in which events are used to give a name to the pathology, incest survivor, Holocaust survivor, transmission of trauma, to name a few, it has implicitly created two categories of patients: patients who, because of their failed solutions for conflict, are regarded as active agents in their own suffering, and those who are victimized by events they endured passively; thus implicitly taking away from the second group the focus on conflicting motivations. This in turn has led to the adoption of some of Freud's concepts that lack a dynamic dimension. First among those is the repetition compulsion which supposedly causes events to be repeated because they happened. The concept has its place, but, if not properly understood, risks by-passing the analysis of unconscious guilt as a motivating factor in repetition. These factors have not been sufficiently explored in the analytic literature, and over the years the author has written a number of articles that try to distinguish important elements that contribute to the psychoanalytic exploration of trauma. This analytical bibliography, compiled with the support of the University of Antwerp, represents a first, important step toward broader studies concerning the nature, function, and significance of propagandistic materials that have been printed and distributed since the seventeenth century in connection with pilgrimage sites in the Southern Netherlands. Two and a half centuries (from 1600 to 1850) of publications are documented. This is an intriguing period for such a study because Catholic clergy made great use of printed propaganda materials for their (often successful) attempts to revitalize pilgrimages as part of the Counter-Reformation. Consequently, there was a new surge of such publications in the Southern Netherlands as of 1600 that prevailed until the early nineteenth century, when changing ecclesiastical views of how one should experience the Catholic faith led many local clergy to publish new types of pilgrimage books. As tens of thousands of pilgrimage texts were printed in this period, only one essential sub-group of these publications could be featured here, namely those related to Marian pilgrimage sites in the current provinces of Antwerp, Vlaams-Brabant, and the county of Brussels. The resulting bibliography reflects the holdings of numerous collections and provides, for each publication whenever possible, a full transcription of the title page, the collation of the book, and notes on whether or not illustrations, dedicatory texts, and personal notations by previous owners are present. This work consequently provides a useful base of knowledge for those interested in a wide variety of topics pertaining both to the production of devotional literature and the extensive popular hold these pilgrimage sites had on people in and beyond the Southern Netherlands.

Words of Life is the sequel and companion to Phenomenology and the "Theological Turn," edited by Dominique Janicaud, Jean-Francois Courtine, Jean-Louis Chrétien, Michel Henry, Jean-Luc Marion, and Paul Ricoeur. In that volume, Janicaud accuses Levinas, Henry, Marion, and Chrétien of "veering" from phenomenological neutrality to a theologically inflected phenomenology. By contrast, the contributors to this collection interrogate whether phenomenology's proper starting point is agnostic or atheistic. Many hold the view that phenomenology after the theological turn may very well be true both to itself and to the phenomenological "things themselves." In one way or another, all of these essays contend with the limits and expectations of phenomenology. As such, they are all concerned with what counts as "proper" phenomenology and even the very structure of phenomenology. None of them, however, is limited to such questions. Indeed, the rich tapestry that they weave tells us much about human experience. Themes such as faith, hope, love, grace, the gift, the sacraments, the words of Christ, suffering, joy, life, the call, touch, listening, wounding, and humility are woven throughout the various meditations in this volume. The contributors use striking examples to illuminate the structure and limits of phenomenology and, in turn, phenomenology serves to clarify those very examples.
