Oxford University Press Swordsmen: The Martial Ethos in the Three Kingdoms
Based upon a wide range of historical and literary sources, Swordsmen is a scholarly study of the military experiences of peers and gentlemen from the British Isles who volunteered to fight in the religious and dynastic wars of mainland Europe from the English intervention in the Dutch war of independence in 1585 to the death of the soldier-king William III in 1702. This apprenticeship in arms exposed these aristocrats to the chivalric revival, the military revolution and the values of neostoicism, and revived the martial ethos of the English aristocracy and reinvigorated the martial traditions of the Irish and Scots. This remilitarization of aristocratic culture and society was completed by 1640, and provided numerous experienced military officers for the various armies of the civil wars and, subsequently, for the embryonic British army after William III committed the Three Kingdoms to the armed struggle against Louis XIV during the Nine Years War. Service in mainland European armies also exposed swordsmen from the British Isles to a fully developed cult of duelling which hampered official efforts to divert aristocratic aggression from feuding and private war to the more rational military and political objectives of the modern state, subverted military discipline and delayed the process of professionalization of the officer corps of the British army.

Open University Press Exploring Wellbeing in the Early Years
Children's experiences and well-being in their earliest years underpin and highly influence their future development and learning. Drawing on research with parents, children and a range of professionals in the early childhood field, this book considers how well-being is interpreted in the early childhood field. It includes snapshots of what our youngest children think about their well-being, and examines external environmental contexts that impact on well-being.The book raises a number of important issues and clarifies priorities that need to be kept at the forefront of practice and provision, such as the fundamental importance of prioritizing children and families' socio-cultural contexts, addressing inequalities and developing a listening culture. Importantly, there is also focus on appropriate pedagogical approaches and aspects of practice that support children's well-being in early childhood settings, such as adult-child relationships, quality interactions, physical play and creative expression. The book also highlights the inseparability of adults' and children's well-being and therefore the need to consider contexts that enhance the potential for parents and practitioners to experience well-being.For all students and practitioners who want to put young children's well-being at the forefront of their practice this is a fascinating, thought provoking and illuminating read.Contributors: Deborah Albon, Mary Dickins, Melian Mansfield, Penny Holland, Micky LeVoguer, Penny Mukherji, Jasmine Pasch, Linda Pound, Judy Stevenson"This book is a timely reminder that young children have a right to be listened to. Wellbeing as a concept is redefined using the voices of children, parents and practitioners. Important questions are raised about the cost to individuals and society if this is not taken seriously."Dilys Wilson, Senior Lecturer in Early Childhood Studies at Middlesex University, UK"This text brings together research literature, theoretical understanding and practical application. The book captures the essence of early childhood and provides a dialogue and debate of holistically challenging well-being for all. This is a book to be treasured."Dr Lesley Curtis, Headteacher/Head of Centre, Everton Nursery School and Family Centre"This book is an essential discussion and authoritative account of the explorations and research outcomes of the LMU/NCB project 'Talking about well-being in early childhood'. The book represents multi-faceted perspectives about children's wellbeing that underpin the values and principles of inclusion, understanding that children are citizens with personhood and rights."Estelle Martin, Anglia Ruskin University, UK"This book is based on a deep and honest respect for young children and the adults who work and play with them and it illustrates with passion and insight the ways in which emotional and physical well-being are built on positive relationships and connections between people."Helen Moylett, Early Years Consultant and writer"This book opens up the way for future analysis of how society can become more at ease with itself so that the unwitting consequences of deeply embedded institutional discrimination, intolerance, negative assumptions, expectations and judgements are removed from young children's lives."Jane Lane (advocate worker for racial equality in the early years)

Chelsea House Publishers Chemical Bonds
Modern life is made up of a mind-boggling array of materials. A simple drinking cup, for example, might be made of Styrofoam, paper, or glass, depending on the drinker's needs at the moment. Home storage cabinets can be made of metal, wood, or plastic. Space shuttles are assembled from silicon, steel, and hundreds of other materials. All of these items owe their properties to the chemical bonds between the atoms that make up the substance. ""Chemical Bonds"" examines the nature of the chemical bonds, answering fundamental questions about how they form, how they are broken, and how they help define life as we know it.

Rowman & Littlefield America's National Heritage Areas: A Guide to the Nation's New Kind of National Park
There are fifty-five National Heritage Areas scattered across the US and they continue to grow in number and diversity. Though they’re not officially national parks, their conservation, education, and recreation related objectives echo those of the national parks: to conserve nationally significant natural and cultural landscapes and to make them available to the public for purposes of education, recreation, and sustainable tourism-related economic development. But the methods of achieving these objectives are different—very different—than those used in the national parks. While both national parks and NHAs are established by Congress, national parks are conventionally large areas of public land that are owned and managed by the National Park Service (NPS). NHAs take a more inclusive, partnership-based approach to their work; they offer local citizens, government at all levels, non-profit organizations, and private sector enterprises the opportunity to define, celebrate and conserve the natural, historic, cultural, scenic and recreational resources that have been vital in shaping their identity and destiny. NHAs are composed primarily of private lands; they’re living landscapes where participants reside, work and play. Each chapter in this guidebook describes the remarkable natural and cultural resources that define NHAs and highlights nearby visitor attractions, enticing readers to visit NHAs and to enjoy and appreciate the attractions offered.

Key Publishing Ltd Airliners of the 1990s
The 1990s brought with it many important developments for the aviation world. The dissolution of the USSR and Yugoslavia led to a rise of new countries and airlines. The aircraft faced changes as well. The early jetliners found themselves hauling cargo in many cases, and the new wide-bodies became the normal mode of passenger transport for long-haul travel, along with the creation of a whole new generation of types for short-haul. However, in parts of the world the old piston-powered props could be found plodding on, albeit in declining numbers. With over 300 color photographs and extended, informative captions, this book reflects the many ways in which the air transport industry changed during the decade. Taking the reader on a visual journey across the globe, this book explores some of the most popular airliners of the time, including Boeing, Airbus, and McDonnell Douglas, and how their aircraft developed throughout the decade.

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Britain at War with the Asante Nation 1823-1900: 'The White Man's Grave'
Britain fought three major wars, and two minor ones, with the Asante people of West Africa in the nineteenth century. Only the Sudanese and Zulu campaigns saw a greater loss of life, both for the British and the indigenous population. Like the Zulus, the Asante were a warrior nation who offered a tough adversary for the British regulars - they were respected for their martial skills and bravery. And yet these wars have rarely been written about and are little understood. That is why Stephen Manning's vivid, detailed new history of this neglected colonial conflict is of such value. In the war of 1823-6 the British were defeated - the British governor's head was severed and his skull was taken to the Asante king who made a cast of gold and this trophy was paraded once a year during an Asante ceremony. The years 1873-4 witnessed the brilliance of Sir Garnet Wolseley in overcoming the logistical problems of sending a large British expedition deep into the jungle where it faced not only a formidable foe but a climate so unforgiving that the region became known as 'The White Man's Grave'. Finally, the 1900 campaign culminated in the epic siege of the British fort in Kumasi which must rank as one of the great Victorian escapades alongside the more famous sieges of Peking and Mafikeng. Stephen Manning's account, which is based on Asante as well as British sources, offers a fascinating view from both sides of one of the most remarkable and protracted struggles of the colonial era.
