Israel Finkelstein is perhaps the best-known Israeli archaeologist in the world. Research on Portuguese orientalism has been mostly centred on the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and has focused on missionary work and Catholic orientalism. In contrast, reflection on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is scarce and has relied on individual case studies, notwithstanding the TECOP (Texts and Contexts of Portuguese Orientalism: The International Congresses of Orientalists, 1873-1973) research project. This edited collection is the result of an international forum (www.tecop.letras.ulisboa.pt) hosted by the Centre for Comparative Studies, the University of Lisbon. The editorial aim is to counter the scant attention paid to Portuguese orientalist scholarship, which has been peripheralized within the comparative history of western imperialisms at large and within national orientalisms in particular. Incorporating Portugal into a broader European colonial discourse about the East, and discussing the responses to Portuguese colonial legacies, gives visibility to the agency of the multiple actors and networks implicated in the Portuguese modern connection to the East. Essays cover former Portuguese India (Goa), Macau, Timor and Japan, as well as East Africa, Egypt, and even Angola as an expansive site of the Portuguese orientalist rhetoric. The chapters by necessity revisit Edward Saids Orientalism (1978), making use of its analytical framework. They foster an understanding of Portuguese orientalism as an epistemological system supported by an elite either intellectual, scientific or literary that assumed different material manifestations in the shape of colonial policies; scientific expeditions; exhibitions; press and literary publications; radio broadcasts; and the institutionalization itself of orientalist knowledge. Most popular have always been the forty-six Parallel Lives, biographies planned to be ethical examples in pairs (in each pair, one Greek figure and one similar Roman), though the last four lives are single. All are invaluable sources of our knowledge of the lives and characters of Greek and Roman statesmen, soldiers and orators. Plutarch’s many other varied extant works, about sixty in number, are known as Moralia or Moral Essays. They are of high literary value, besides being of great use to people interested in philosophy, ethics, and religion. This book focuses on the collaborative work between Native women storytellers and their female ethnographers and/or editors, but the book is also about what it is that is constitutive of scientific rigor, factual accuracy, cultural authenticity, and storytelling signification and meaning. Regardless of discipline, academic ethnographers who conducted their field work research during the twentieth century were trained in the accepted scientific methods and theories of the time that prescribed observation, objectivity, and evaluative distance. In contradistinction to such prescribed methods, regarding the ethnographic work conducted among Native Americans, it turns out that the intersubjectively relational work of women (both ethnographers and the Indigenous storytellers with whom they worked) has produced far more reliably factual, historically accurate, and tribally specific Indigenous autobiographies than the more “scientifically objective” approaches of most of the male ethnographers. This volume provides a close lens to the work of a number of women ethnographers and Native American women storytellers to elucidate the effectiveness of their relational methods. Through a combined rhetorical and literary analysis of these ethnographies, we are able to differentiate the products of the women’s working relationships. By shifting our focus away from the surface level textual reading that largely approaches the texts as factually informative documents, literary analysis provides access into the deeper levels of the storytelling that lies beneath the surface of the edited texts. Non-Native scholars and editors such as Franc Johnson Newcomb, Ruth Underhill, Nancy Lurie, Julie Cruikshank, and Noël Bennett and Native storytellers and writers such as Grandma Klah, María Chona, Mountain Wolf Woman, Mrs. Angela Sidney, Mrs. Kitty Smith, Mrs. Annie Ned, and Tiana Bighorse help us to understand that there are ways by which voices and worlds are more and less disclosed for posterity. The results vary based upon the range of factors surrounding their production, but consistent across each case is the fact that informational accuracy is contingent upon the the degree of mutual respect and collaboration in the women’s working relationships. And it is in their pioneering intersubjective methodologies that the work of these women deserves far greater attention and approbation.

November 1918war Hugo Preuß von der Regierung der Volksbeauftragten zum Staatssekretär des Innern ernannt und mit der Ausarbeitung eines Entwurfs des Allgemeinen Teils der künftigen Verfassung beauftragt worden. Nach dem Gesetz über die vorläufige Reichsgewalt vom 10.2.1010 wurde Friedrich Ebert von der Nationalversammlung zum Reichspräsidenten gewählt und Hugo Preuß zum ersten parlamentarisch verantwortlicher Reichsminister des Innern ernannt. Wegen der Bedingungen des Versailler Friedensvertrags trat er mit der Regierung Scheidemann als Innenminister zurück, führte aber als Kommissar der Reichsregierung die Verhandlungen der Verfassunggebenden Deutschen Nationalversammlung bis zum erfolgreichen Abschluss weiter und gilt deshalb als "Vater der Weimarer Verfassung". vom 11.8.1919. Nach dem Scheitern der Paulskirchenverfassung von 1848/49 war das der zweite Versuch, in Deutschland die Demokratie zu verankern. Der vorliegende Band ist, was erst allmählich erkannt wird, in vieler Hinsicht die Basis des heutigen Grundgesetzes. Sie scheiterte nicht an Architekturfehlern, sondern daran, dass eine demokratische Verfassung von einer entsprechenden politischen Kultur gestützt werden muss. Die theoretische Frage, ob die Bismarck-Verfassung hätte reformiert werden können, war nach Flucht und Thronverzicht des Kaisers praktisch entschieden. Der erste Entwurf mit der Denkschrift vom 3.1.1919 trägt die Handschrift von Preuß. Da er es für ausgeschlossen hielt nach der Revolution der Bolschewiki die deutsche Revolution weiterzutreiben, waren auch Gegner der Demokratie zur Konstituierenden Nationalversammlung wahlberechtigt. Deshalb konnte die Weimarer Reichsverfassung nur ein "Kompromiss" sein. Die Kämpfe um das Verfassungswerk von Weimar vermitteln ein faszinierendes Bild dieser tragischen Periode unserer Geschichte.

Volker Rabens answers the question of how, according to the apostle Paul, the Holy Spirit enables religious-ethical life. In the first part of the book, the author discusses the established view that the Spirit is a material substance which transforms people ontologically by virtue of its physical nature. In order to assess this "Stoic" reading of Paul, the author examines all the passages from the Hebrew Bible, early Judaism, Hellenism and Paul that have been put forward in support of this concept of ethical enabling. He concludes that there is no textual evidence in early Judaism or Paul that the Spirit was conceived as a material substance. Furthermore, none of these or any of the Graeco-Roman writings show that ethical living derives from the transformation of the "substance" of the person that is imbued with a physical Spirit. The second part of the study offers a fresh approach to the ethical work of the Spirit which is based on a relational concept of Paul's theology. Rabens argues that it is primarily through initiating and sustaining an intimate relationship with God the Father, Jesus Christ, and with the community of faith that the Spirit transforms and empowers people for ethical living. The author establishes this thesis on the basis of an exegetical study of a variety of passages from the Pauline corpus.
