World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Structural Proteomics And Its Impact On The Life Sciences
The role played by structural proteomics in the first decade of the 21st century is equivalent to that played by the Human Genome Project in the last decade of the 20th century. The development of high-throughput technologies that permit the solution of hundreds of 3D structures of individual proteins, protein-protein complexes and protein-drug complexes, just by one laboratory in a single year, will provide a knowledge base which will change the face of structural biology. This will have an immediate influence on medicinal chemistry and molecular pharmacology, as well as an increasing impact on such disciplines as neurobiology, developmental biology, immunology and molecular medicine. This book presents a state-of-the-art overview of the structural proteomics field, ranging from policy issues related to funding and goals, through the high-throughput procedures for protein production, to the solution of the structures of proteins and higher-order entities, via a multidisciplinary approach involving molecular biology, X-ray crystallography, NMR and electron microscopy, as well as bioinformatics analysis. This is the first book to provide such a comprehensive coverage of a rapidly evolving field.

JCB Mohr (Paul Siebeck) The Pentateuch and Its Readers
This volume celebrates the contribution of Baruch J. Schwartz to the field of biblical studies through essays that treat the major foci of his research. These include the Pentateuch and its composition; priesthood, cult, and Priestly texts; major religious ideas expressed in the Hebrew Bible; and the reception of biblical texts and ideas (especially those related to the Pentateuch). A special emphasis of the essays on Pentateuchal composition is the neo-documentarian approach that Schwartz has long championed and taught to his students.

Fordham University Press The John F. Sonnett Memorial Lectures at Fordham University School of Law: A Half-Century of Advocacy and Judicial Perspectives
This book represents the distinguished Sonnett lecture series sponsored by Fordham’s Law School that has taken place for the last 45 years. In this collection, U.S. Supreme Court Justices, a Lord Chancellor of England, three Chief Justices of Ireland, a Chief Justice of South Africa, a President of the Supreme Court of Israel, and other leading judges and lawyers examine common law–based legal systems and underlying principles. The lectures encourage attorneys and society to improve the training of lawyers, respect the independence of the judiciary, place ethics at the forefront, question the efficacy of the criminal justice system, and explore the complex philosophical issues facing the judiciary. Taken as a whole, these lectures are a prescription for improvements and innovations throughout the legal system. The lectures were delivered by judges and lawyers who were involved in many of the most significant cases of the last half-century that strengthened individual rights and promoted access to justice. Each finds its deepest meaning in advancing the theme of Fordham Law School: “In the Service of Others.”

The University of Chicago Press Foraging: Behavior and Ecology
Foraging is fundamental to animal survival and reproduction, yet it is much more than a simple matter of finding food; it is a biological imperative. Animals must find and consume resources to succeed, and they make extraordinary efforts to do so. For instance, pythons rarely eat, but when they do, their meals are large - as much as 60 percent larger than their own bodies. The snake's digestive system is normally dormant, but during digestion metabolic rates can increase fortyfold. A python digesting quietly on the forest floor has the metabolic rate of a thoroughbred in a dead heat. This and related foraging processes have broad applications in ecology, cognitive science, anthropology, and conservation biology - and they can be further extrapolated in economics, neurobiology, and computer science. "Foraging" is the first comprehensive review of the topic in more than twenty years. A monumental undertaking, this volume brings together twenty-two experts from throughout the field to offer the latest on the mechanics of foraging, modern foraging theory, and foraging ecology. The fourteen essays cover all the relevant issues, including cognition, individual behavior, caching behavior, parental behavior, anti-predator behavior, social behavior, population and community ecology, herbivory, and conservation. Considering a wide range of taxa, from birds to mammals to amphibians, "Foraging" will be the definitive guide to the field.

Peeters Publishers Recherches Levinassiennes

In the context of Distributed and Real-time Embedded Systems (DRES), system developers are faced with reducing system development cost and time while developing correct (relating to safe and QoS properties) and increasingly complex systems. To take up this challenge, Model Driven Development (MDD) advocates the intensive use of models and model transformations on several levels of abstraction. This book includes contributions from academic and professional experts on a range of topics related to MDD practices, methods and emerging technologies. After introducing general concepts about modeling and how to implement model transformations, two presentations provide an overview of the MARTE profile. Coverage is then given to the most common aspects of MDD for DRES: structuring architectures using components, designing hardware architecture, evaluation and validation through tests and performance analysis. Finally, guidance is given as to how and why MDD should be used by presenting a tool to support MDD and describing an industrial application of MDD concepts.

McGraw-Hill Education ISE Fundamentals of Structural Analysis
Fundamentals of Structural Analysis introduces to engineering and architecture students a range of techniques for analyzing structures, from classical methods to matrix analysis upon which modern computer analysis is based. After an introduction to design loads, a thoughtful review of prerequisite skills in statics for analyzing statically determinate structures is presented. Methods for computing deflections then pave the way for classical methods of analyzing indeterminate structures–the flexibility, slope-deflection, and moment distribution methods. Approximate analysis techniques useful for practical design are then presented. For application to bridge-type structures with moving loads, the concept of influence lines is also covered. Finally, the stiffness method is introduced and extended upon in the direct stiffness method using matrix analysis. Throughout, carefully drawn figures, helpful insights, and practical examples and problems are presented to make this text a useful guide for students (and practitioners) to learn the essential skills for analyzing structures.

Oxford University Press The Letters, Writings, and Speeches of Oliver Cromwell: Volume 3: 16 December 1653 to 2 September 1658
This is the first truly scholarly edition of all the recorded writings and recorded speech acts of Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) and consists of more than 1,000 texts. Oliver Cromwell, one of Britain's greatest and most controversial generals, rose from lowly provincial origins to preside over the trial and execution of a king, to undertake the most complete conquest of Ireland and Scotland ever achieved, and to spend the last five years of his life as head of state, as Lord Protector of Britain and Ireland. A passionate speaker who claimed to be called by God to overthrow tyranny in church and state, and a powerful advocate for a very broad religious liberty and equality, his speeches and letters reveal the public and the private man more completely than for almost any other early modern political leader. This new edition not only publishes a number of new items, but also edits a large number from recovered originals not previously edited. Every item has its own detailed introduction explaining the status of the text and its context or contexts, but also very full annotation - identifying for example almost every person, place and event mentioned in the text and also - where there is no holograph but also variant copies - all significant differences between variant early copies.

The University of Michigan Press Electoral Incentives in Congress
David Mayhew’s (1974) thesis regarding the “electoral connection” and its impact on legislative behavior has become the theoretical foundation for much of the existing research on the modern U.S. Congress. In its most basic form, Mayhew’s theory contends that once in office, legislators pursue whatever actions put them in the best position to achieve reelection. The electoral connection has traditionally been considered a phenomenon of the post-World War II environment, but legislative scholars have begun to suggest that Mayhew’s argument applies to politics in earlier congressional eras as well. To assess these disparate claims more systematically, Carson and Sievert investigate whether legislators in earlier historical eras were motivated by many of the same factors that influence their behavior today, especially with regard to the pursuit of reelection. In this respect, they examine the role of electoral incentives in shaping legislative behavior across a wide swath of the nineteenth century. This entails looking at patterns of turnover in Congress across this period, the politics underlying renomination of candidates, the changing role of parties in recruiting candidates to run and its broader effect on candidate competition, as well as electoral accountability across a variety of dimensions. The results have wide-ranging implications for the evolution of Congress and the development of various legislative institutions over time.

WW Norton & Co The Birds of America: The Bien Chromolithographic Edition
John James Audubon is arguably America’s most widely recognized and collected artist. His Birds of America has been reproduced often, beginning with the double elephant folio printed by Havill in England, followed by a much smaller “Octavo” edition printed in Philadelphia and sold by subscription. After Audubon’s death, his family arranged with the New York printer Julius Bien to produce another elephant folio edition, this time by the new chromolithographic process. It too would be sold by subscription, but the venture, begun in 1858, was brought to an abrupt end by the Civil War. Only 150 plates were produced, and the number remaining today is slight; they are among the rarest and most sought after Audubon prints. Bound in cloth with a full cloth slipcase, this beautifully produced book is the first complete reproduction of Bien chromolithographs and will become the centerpiece of any bird lover’s library.
