Schiffer Publishing Ltd American Jewelry Manufacturers
The identification and dating of American jewelry heretofore has been difficult because few pieces bear standard markings and the references have been diverse, hard to find, and incomplete. Using old trade journals and their related directories as her primary sources, the eminent silver historian Dorothy Rainwater has exhaustively compiled here for the first time a comprehensive reference of jewelry trademarks and manufacturers in alphabetical order. She has also written a history of jewelry making in the United States which explains the framework upon which this enormous industry was built. The large scale manufacturers which began in the 1840s form a major portion of this directory. it is surprising to learn that only in 1961, after years of effort by the Jeweler's Vigilance Committee and the backing of trade journals, did American law require makers' marks on new jewelry. Therefore, this reference should become an important sourcebook for every jeweler, collector, antique jewelry dealer and manufacturing historian for the foreseeable future.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Alex Stewart: Portrait of a Pioneer
Alex Stewart was a recipient of a National Heritage Fellowship Award in 1983 by the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington which recognized him as a living national treasure. Over a twenty year period of friendship the author developed a profound respect and great love for Alex Stewart, a truly remarkable Tennessee mountain character whose life epitomizes the pioneer development in America. The best of hundreds of hours of recorded conversations with Stewart are compiled into a moving portrait of this cooper, father of 13, farmer, logger, railroad man, and do-it-yourself interpreter of his rugged homeland. Because the ways Stewart tells his own stories are as important as the stories themselves, he is allowed to do most of the "talking" throughout the book. Through his own account of the people around him, Alex describes his rural life in the late 19th and 20th centuries through stories such as when he was bit by a rabid dog, when neighbor children begged for food, or how people gathered honey, made marbles, moonshine or furniture. Throughout his 94 years, Alex, who died in 1985, depended upon his own good sense to direct him and it led him through a rich and fascinating life. This book is a genuine labor of love.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Chesapeake Sailing Craft: Recollections of Robert H. Burgess
Thirty years have passed since the 1975 publication of Robert H. Burgess’s classic Chesapeake Sailing Craft, and while the original edition of this book has been out of print for many years, this new expanded edition brings alive the author’s photographs and recollections for a new generation of readers. Within these pages, Burgess presents a rare photographic record of the period 1925–1975, depicting the bay sailing craft from log canoe to four-masted schooner. Robert H. Burgess’s photographs show the vessels in all phases of their activities on these waters, including loading and unloading cargoes, under sail and in port, in shipyards, details of rigging, fittings, and decks, interior views, as powerboats, and abandoned hulks. No one has so thoroughly photographed the Chesapeake sailing vessels as Burgess. He applied himself to the task as though he were getting paid for it. But it was purely through a feeling for the history of the bay and its craft, an awareness that a change was taking place, that he pursued his subject so persistently. If he had not undertaken this labor of love, most of the sailing vessels in this volume would have passed on with no photographic record of their ever having existed. This edition showcases the original text, photos, and captions and adds 150 new photos with captions by William A. Fox. The result is Chesapeake Sailing Craft: Recollections of Robert H. Burgess, a new and expanded edition of the original volume for bay enthusiasts to enjoy. As in the original edition, all the photos in this book were taken by Robert Burgess. They appear as he saw them through the viewfinder of his camera and as he printed them in the darkroom, uncropped and unretouched.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Mystery of Mary Surratt: The Plot to Kill President Lincoln
The Mystery of Mary Surratt is a true story about the Maryland woman who was convicted and hanged in 1865 for her alleged part in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. For more than a century, historians have argued about her true role. Some claim she knew nothing about John Wilkes Booth’s plan to shoot Lincoln and other top government leaders. Others insist she knowingly helped Booth and might even have masterminded the whole plot. This book lays out the facts in a narrative that lets young readers draw their own conclusions. Author Rebecca C. Jones researched the book at the Surratt House library in Clinton, Maryland, where she read letters, old newspapers, diary entries, and other sources. She also followed the Booth escape route, interviewed researchers, and found a diary written by a woman who was in the Old Capitol Prison with Mary Surratt. The book is aimed at middle-schoolers, but is accessible to fourth graders studying Maryland history. It should help students develop critical thinking skills as they decide for themselves whether Mary Surratt was guilty or innocent. Grades 4 to 8

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Sequoia: Presidential Yacht: Presidential Yacht
Built on the shores of the Delaware Bay in 1925, Sequoia is a Trumpy-designed 104-foot wooden motor yacht that has hosted eight U.S. presidents and has become a Chesapeake Bay icon. Giles M. Kelly served as the yacht’s skipper from 1983 to 1988, and was surprised to find no book chronicled her history. During his tenure as captain of the yacht, he took the boat around the country on a goodwill cruise and later oversaw her major restoration. His wife, Ann Stevens, a professional photographer, documented much of that trip and the restoration. Although only two years of the ship’s logs could be found, Kelly undertook to uncover the truth of Sequoia’s many “sea stories” by primary research and interviewing those who had served and visited aboard. He soon discovered a kind of Upstairs, Downstairs perspective on Sequoia. This element lends a unique appeal to this saga of an interesting vessel and her service through eight administrations.

Holden chose a life devoted to teaching and equality.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Counties of Southern Maryland
The story of Maryland’s three southern counties is really the story of the beginnings of the state itself. On March 25, 1634, the first European settlers came to the area in hopes of finding religious freedom and economic opportunities, led by Leonard Calvert. Counties of Southern Maryland describes the early settlement and traces the region’s history through the end of the twentieth century in the area that now comprises St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Charles counties. This is the third book in a series about Maryland’s counties that is designed for elementary school children studying their state. The authors approach each region of the state by introducing what is common to the counties, including their history, climate, geography, and wildlife. They describe the facets of each county that are unique: its establishment, county seat, growth, government, major towns, churches and other religious organizations, schools, businesses, agriculture, and places of interest. Clever line drawings by Marcy Dunn Ramsey accompany “Fun Facts” and “Not-so-fun Facts”. Middle grades–ages 10-13.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Dancing with the Tide: Watermen of the Chesapeake: Watermen of the Chesapeake
A certain mystique has always surrounded the watermen of the Chesapeake Bay. This book goes far toward defining it by taking the reader on a journey with the watermen as they harvest oysters, clams, fish, and crabs. The author was on board with the watermen, so he describes their work firsthand, including not only the practical details, but also the humorous and serious sides of a typical day. In documenting the work of the watermen, Blackistone tries to preserve what remains of their way of life. As fewer sons and daughters follow in the footsteps of their parents by working the water, the number of people who can convey the traditions of the watermen by oral history is gradually diminishing. Blackistone’s concern for the potential loss of an entire subculture inspired his research for this book. As a sequel to an earlier work that Blackistone published in 1989, Dancing with the Tide chronicles what has changed for the watermen over the last decade: how the changing conditions of the bay and new regulations have impacted their work life, what declining harvests have meant to them, and what the new millennium might hold for them and their families. Blackistone also interviewed government officials, conservationists, and watermen’s association officers to incorporate other facets of this fascinating occupation which so captivates the public. Engaging photographs of the watermen at work highlight this documentary of a year in the life of these harvesters of the Chesapeake Bay.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Law of Tug, Tow, and Pilotage
In its first two editions by the late Alex L. Parks, this work achieved a worldwide reputation as the authority on the maritime laws that relate to the towing industry and pilotage. The current editor has continued in that fine tradition. Nowhere has the law related to marine transportation of goods by tug and tow and harbor towage and pilotage been treated in greater depth. The citations are presented in a useful form, giving precedence to the AMC cites most commonly used by the admiralty practitioner; the essence of the holdings of cases is enclosed in parentheses following the citation. Providing the professional practitioner with a ready source of reference to this area of the maritime world, the book treats the concepts of the field by tracing their derivation in admiralty law. Also included with the analysis of each topic is a thorough survey of case law. In this edition new case citations have been added, updating the law where there have been changes and reflecting the inevitable evolution of the law that is its lifeblood. The case update is generally through the 1992 AMC.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd The Chester Town Tea Party
Amanda Wetherby was nine years old in May of 1774, when the people of Chester Town, Maryland, as a sign of their support of the people of Boston, voted not to buy, sell, or use tea. At the supper table one evening, talk turned to the unfair tax Britain had levied on the colonists and what that had to do with the shipload of tea aboard the Geddes in the harbor. Amanda was very unhappy not to have tea to drink with meals. The next day, her brother, George, swaggered off to a “tea party just for men.” Hot, thirsty, and tired of pulling weeds in the garden, Amanda decided she would go too, and get some of that tea to wash down the dust. And if the party is for men only—why, she would dress as a boy! So Amanda becomes part of an event that is still celebrated each May in modern Chestertown. Early reader–ages 5-8.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd The Assateague Ponies
Ponies have lived on Assateague Island for hundreds of years, but have been studied scientifically only since 1975. In 1965, twenty-one ponies were released into the northern portion of Assateague, within the Assateague Island National Seashore, where their numbers have risen gradually and the animals have flourished. It is these feral horses—free to roam, forage for their own food and water, and live and reproduce as they choose—that Dr. Keiper, an animal behavior specialist, has studied and photographed. In this book, he presents the fascinating results of his investigations, enhanced by a generous selection of photographs from the vast collection he assembled over a ten-year period of study.
