Schiffer Publishing Ltd Women Were Pirates, Too
From women who fought alongside the men in dastardly high-sea robberies, to an Irish heroine who plundered British ships, to women unfortunate enough to fall amongst thieves, captured and virtually cast into a life of ill-gotten gain, this book explores some long overlooked characters in the history of piracy. Women haven't always played the mere role of passenger aboard ships -- there were those who commanded them. In fact, one of history's most notorious pirates was Madame Ching, whose fleet involved thousands of war junks that literally ruled the southern coasts of China in 1809. Scandinavian princess Alwilda's adventures as a pirate have made her name legendary in the northern seas, and Ireland's Grace O'Malley is a much-documented heroine, whose brave fighting exploits in the late 1500s, both on land and sea, earned her the respect of the British throne. And during the final throes of Western piracy, Mary Read and Anne Bonny cruised the Caribbean, disguised as men and committing deeds that earned them death sentences upon their capture.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Men's Clothing & Fabrics in the 1890s
By today's standards, men wore formal dress every day in the 1890s. The color lithographs and line drawings of men dressed for work that are shown here bear striking contrast to men in the streets now. That very fact makes these clothes more than interesting today, they are actually time capsules for the lifestyle of a century ago. Heavy woolen cloth that has lasted a hundred years, and practical styles that were always comfortable and smart-looking bear witness to the time before automobiles and electricity. Now they have become antiques themselves. The hundreds of cloth swatches that appear have subtle patterns and plenty of texture to withstand much use. Vintage clothing collectors and designers will marvel at their variety.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Firestorm at Gettysburg: Civilian Voices June-November 1863
In this book, the civilians who lived through the battle of Gettysburg recount this pivotal event in the American Civil War in their own words. The eyewitness accounts, spanning from June 15, 1863, through Lincoln's address in November of that year to the throngs gathered to open the national cemetery on the battlefield, are compelling tales told by those literally trapped inside the lines of the two great, warring armies. Many of the leading characters are women of strong character coping with situations they had never anticipated and could not hope to prepare for. The interactions between the townsfolk and the soldiers are fascinating reading. Over 160 historical photographs and illustrations accompany the text. To the authors' knowledge, never before have some of these photographs been shown or the narratives of the civilians, literally cut off from the outside world by the war, been told so completely and in their own words. The stories are gleened from diaries, letters, newspaper articles, interviews, and books written by the civilians after the fact. No effort has been made to change any of their language for any reason. There was no need. In this book, certain myths are exploded and one of the most monumental moments in American history comes to life before the reader's eyes.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Death from Above: The 7th Bombardment Group in World War II
The 7th Bombardment Group was one of the few bombardment groups in the Army Air Corps active during the 1930s. From its activation in 1929 to the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Group flew all major types of Army Air Corps bombardment aircraft and participated in numerous exercises and annual maneuvers, helping to perfect the tactics of daylight precision bombing. During World War II, the 7th Bomb Group carried out strategic bombing operations in a theater of war far different from what the pre-war doctrine had envisioned. Units of the Group were present at the attack on Pearl Harbor and were still flying combat missions at the very end of the war, making the Group one of the longest serving combat units of the Army Air Force. Flying B-17 Flying Fortresses out of Java in the desperate early days of 1942, the Group moved to India to become part of the Tenth Air Force. Beginning combat operations in April 1942, the 7th Bomb Group converted to the B-24 Liberator and continued to fly missions over Burma and Thailand until August 1945. This book provides a description of the little-known strategic bombing operations of the Tenth Air Force in the China-Burma-India Theater.
