The History Press Ltd Firing the Flying Scotsman and Other Great Locomotives: Life on the Footplate in the Last Years of Steam
Remembering the romance of a bygone era, with all the dirt, grime and risks the job entailed! Fast train fireman Ken Issitt worked on the footplate from the late 1940s to 1960, experiencing firing some of the greatest locomotives from the Flying Scotsman to Coltimore and Blink Bonney. The work was hard and conditions were tough but little did Ken know at the time that he was experiencing the last years of steam; he would never have imagined the romantic associations the period evokes today. Through a number of short accounts the past comes vividly to life, via short stories about train crashes, pea-soup fogs, and fires going out. From the beginning of a shift, donning overalls and making up a packing, and from shunting in the marshalling yard to flying along with an express train at 80mph, Ken Issitt describes what life on the footplate was like across the final years of steam, his tales beautifully brought to life by Chris Bates’s charming pen and ink illustrations.

University of Texas Press Limbo Beirut
In Hilal Chouman’s Limbo Beirut, a gay artist, a struggling novelist, a pregnant woman, a disabled engineering student, a former militia member, and a medical intern all take turns narrating the violent events of May 2008, when Hezbollah militants and Sunni fighters clashed in the streets of Beirut. For most of these young men and women, the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990) is but a vague recollection, but the brutality of May 2008 serves to reawaken forgotten memories and stir up fears of a revival of sectarian violence. Yet despite these fears, the violence these characters witness helps them to break free from the mundane details of their lives and look at the world anew. The multiple narrative voices and the dozens of pen-and-ink illustrations that accompany the text allow Chouman to achieve a mesmerizing cinematic quality with this novel that is unique in modern Arabic fiction. Not only will readers appreciate the meaningful exploration of the effects of violence on the psyche, but they will also enjoy discovering how the lives of these characters—almost all of whom are strangers to one another—intersect in surprising ways.

Dominique Bondy, born in Zurich in 1946, created an extensive artistic oeuvre starting in her youth, and later also alongside her studies of comparative literature and Romance philology and her work as a psychoanalyst. The full colour plates are accompanied by Bondy’s own poems, which she writes in French, English, and German, some of which were written specifically for this book. The text contributions come from the writer and philologist Iso Camartin and the art historian Marianne Karabelnik. Reflections on her biography and art by Dominique Bondy herself round out the book. Shepheard-Walwyn (Publishers) Ltd Sketches Sartorial, Tonsorial and the Like: A Collection of Light Humorous Verse
St Claire Bullock - a Professor of Philosophy, no less - in the intervals between pondering the great questions of life, turned his hand to penning light verse in the manner of Hilaire Belloc, Ogden Nash and Edward Lear. In rhyming couplets these wry and witty poems ponder the foibles and vanities of mortals. Some of these are captured in pen and ink drawings which caricature the subject of the poems. Each character is given an amusing name, beginning with Master Cecil Abercorn, through Clarence Castle, Serena Huff, The Marchioness of Mal de Mer, Major Houghton Reid and Thomas Tinkham Tattersall to Roland Washburn White. There are 70 poems in all of which 10 are illustrated. The illustration on the front cover relates to Rupert Ashe: 'The greatest pride of Rupert Ashe was his luxuriant moustache. He took great care to keep it groomed, And even, with restraint, perfumed. He brushed it upward every day, and it made such a grand display, that people who were not the wiser, imagined that he was the Kaiser.'

University of Toronto Press The Living Inca Town: Tourist Encounters in the Peruvian Andes
The Living Inca Town presents a rich case study of tourism in Ollantaytambo, a rapidly developing destination in the southern Peruvian Andes and the starting point for many popular treks to Machu Picchu. Tourism is generally welcomed in Ollantaytambo, as it provides a steady stream of work for local businesses, particularly those run by women. However, the obvious material inequalities between locals and tourists affect many interactions and have contributed to conflict and aggression throughout the tourist zones. Based on a number of research visits over the course of fifteen years, The Living Inca Town examines the experiences and interactions of locals, visitors, and tourism brokers. The book makes room for unique perspectives and uses innovative visual methods, including photovoice images and pen and ink drawings, to represent different viewpoints of day-to-day tourist encounters. The Living Inca Town vividly illustrates how tourism can perpetuate gendered and global inequalities, while also exploring new avenues to challenge and renegotiate these roles.

How do you make cheese from pantry staples? Or create an oven smoker from scratch in just two minutes? Or make ice cream without a machine? In Home Made, Yvette van Boven shows you how, complete with an irreverent voice, step-by-step photos and illustrations, and a gorgeous photo alongside every recipe. While her recipes are rooted in a natural, from-scratch cooking philosophy, van Boven is never preachy (she doesn’t use the word “organic”); she believes that this way of cooking is fun and that the dishes simply taste better. Chapters include Preserving Vegetables, Pre-Dinner Drinks, Chocolate and Cookies, After a Night Out, Ice-Cream-You-Scream, Don’t Forget the Dog!, and more. Each chapter starts with a basic dish that you can make yourself, but usually don’t because you think it’s too complicated (think again!), and includes variations—basic bread becomes focaccia with olives and rosemary, or red cherry and thyme bread. This book will inspire you to make every dish at home. Museum of Modern Art Picasso: Guitars 1912-1914
Pablo Picasso’s modest yet revolutionary cardboard and sheet metal Guitar sculptures (1912 and 1914, respectively) bracket an incandescent period of structural, spatial and material experimentation for the artist. In October 1912, while in what he described as ‘the process of imagining a guitar’, Picasso embraced the radical techniques of collage, construction, and mixedmedia painting, frequently combining traditional artists’ supplies – oil paint, charcoal, pastel, ink – with what were then unconventional materials, including cardboard, newspaper, wallpaper, sheet music and sand. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, this volume situates Picasso’s Guitars within the constellation of objects that surrounded them in his studio, affording a fresh understanding of the unique material and historical qualities of the artist’s work in the years immediately prior toWorldWar I. An essay by Anne Umland incorporates photographs, correspondence, archival records and eyewitness accounts, providing insights into Picasso’s practice and the remarkable institutional history behind the acquisition of the two Guitar sculptures, both gifts to MoMA from the artist.
