John Wiley and Sons Ltd With Child: Lee Child and the Readers of Jack Reacher
With a foreword by Lee Child.Andy Martin spent a year in the company of Lee Child, creator of tough-guy hero Jack Reacher. With Child is the diary of their adventures, tracking the publication and reception of Make Me, the writing of Night School at an apartment in Manhattan, the filming of Never Go Back in New Orleans, all the agony and ecstasy of the creative process and the sheer hard work of selling a bestseller. They go on the road together, from TV studios to bookstores, from Harvard to Stockholm, amid literary conferences and gunshows, rivalries and reviews ranging from adulatory to murderous. We meet fellow writers like Stephen King and David Lagercrantz and Karin Slaughter, and dissect the latest novel from Jonathan Franzen. But Martin also reaches out to Child’s legion of readers in America and around the world. He tracks down a woman in Texas whose name appears in the home invasion scene in Make Me; he goes up a mountain in Montana in search of the only reader who thinks Reacher is a “lightweight”; and he talks to obsessive fans from Europe to South Africa who find salvation or consolation in the colossal form of Jack Reacher. This compelling account of life on the road with Lee Child demonstrates that readers are just as important as writers in the making of modern fiction.

Lexington Books Jack Kerouac and the Traditions of Classic and Modern Haiku
Jack Kerouac and the Traditions of Classic and Modern Haiku is a reading of the haiku collected in Jack Kerouac’s Book of Haikus, edited by Regina Weinreich, (2003), one of the two largest collections of English haiku. “Above all,” Kerouac wrote in his journal, “a Haiku must be very simple and free of all poetic trickery and makes a little picture and yet be as airy and graceful as a Vivaldi Pastorella.” Before trying his hand at composing haiku, Kerouac learned, as did Wright, the theory and technique of haiku from R. H. Blyth, the most influential haiku scholar and critic. Most of Kerouac’s haiku reflect eastern philosophies―Confucianism, Buddhist ontology, and Zen―, as do classic haiku. A son of devout French Canadian Catholic parents, the young Kerouac was impressed with Christian doctrine, but later was inspired by Buddhism. In his haiku Kerouc conflates Christian doctrine of mercy with that of Buddhism. Classic haiku taught Kerouac that not only must human beings treat their fellow human beings with respect and compassion, but they must also treat nonhuman beings such as animals, insects, plants, and flowers as their equals. Many of Kerouac’s haiku can be read as modern haiku for the technique of beat poetics he applied. All in all, Kerouac’s haiku express the worldview that human beings are not at the center of the universe.

Key Publishing Ltd Class 47s: The Jack of All Trades
Class 47s have now been part of the UK railway system for over 60 years. They have been used on every type of train over the years, including front line passenger, freight and charter trains. During the late 1980s and through the following 20 years, however, many locos were steadily withdrawn from service with their former duties being taken over by newer fixed formation electric and diesel units. However, due to their versatility and almost a go anywhere' capability, many of the newer operating companies that appeared during this period saw the potential in further use for them. Although the vast majority have long since been scrapped, there is still a good amount of examples that can been seen at work throughout the UK. This book shows the duties the class has worked from around the mid-1980s through to the present time.

University of California Press Jack Benny and the Golden Age of American Radio Comedy
The king of radio comedy from the Great Depression through the early 1950s, Jack Benny was one of the most influential entertainers in twentieth-century America. A master of comic timing and an innovative producer, Benny, with his radio writers, developed a weekly situation comedy to meet radio's endless need for new material, at the same time integrating advertising into the show's humor. Through the character of the vain, cheap everyman, Benny created a "fall guy," whose frustrated struggles with his employees addressed mid-century America's concerns with race, gender, commercialism, and sexual identity. Kathryn H. Fuller-Seeley contextualizes her analysis of Jack Benny and his entourage with thoughtful insights into the intersections of competing entertainment media and argues that transmedia stardom, branded entertainment, and virality are, in fact, the newest versions of key elements in the history of American popular culture.
