He wants to get away from it all. Despite a satisfying career as chief curator of a museum devoted to the vanished American past, he finds he himself wants to vanish. So with the help of a book on the life and culture of a vanished tribe of Indians known as Bluff-dwellers, he takes up residence in the wilderness of the Ozark mountains, with only a dog for company and only an atlatl—a primitive spear thrower—to provide him with his supper. His few amusements are the playing of tunes on a hair-comb-and-tissue and writing what he intends to be an indictment of modern civilization in his journals. He makes the acquaintance of a young moonshiner who keeps him supplied abundantly with corn liquor. But after six years of this life he realizes that what he is trying to get away from is himself.

Cambridge University Press In Search of Home: Citizenship, Law and the Politics of the Poor
In Search of Home explores a new yet less explored space of urban poverty – rehabilitation housing for the displaced poor, which increasingly dots the peripheries of Indian cities. This longitudinal ethnography examines these new liminal zones suspended between a slum and the legal city, producing 'citizenship in-limbo' and relegating the poor to perpetual dependence on the state albeit legal residence. It examines how the flexible governance of such housing produces illegalities, and how state institutions and actors stand to gain through systemic corruption that co-opts urban poor groups, pre-empting radical resistance. This book makes central the gendered nature of such politics, detailing the everyday political work of women, vital to the development of poor neighbourhoods and political struggles for housing. This analysis of rehabilitation housing policies and their implementation, chronicles the myriad strategies employed by the urban poor, from documenting to political performances, in their struggles for a home.

CABI Publishing Integrated management of Insect Pests on Canola and other Brassica Oilseed Crops
This book comprehensively reviews current pest management practices and explores novel integrated pest management strategies in Brassica oilseed crops. It is essential reading for pest management practitioners and researchers working on pest management in canola and other Brassica crops worldwide. Canola, mustard, camelina and crambe are the most important oilseed crops in the world. Canola is the second largest oilseed crop in the world providing 13% of the world's supply. Seeds of these species commonly contain 40% or more oil and produce meals with 35 to 40% protein. However, its production has declined significantly in recent years due to insect pest problems. The canola pest complexes are responsible for high insecticide applications on canola. Many growers rely on calendar-based spraying schedules for insecticide applications. The diamondback moth Plutella xylostella and flea beetles Phyllotreta spp. (P. cruciferae and P. striolata)cause serious damage to canola. In the Northern Great Plains, USA, for instance, P. xylostella is now recorded everywhere that canola is grown. Severe damage to canola plants can be caused by overwintering populations of flea beetles feeding on newly emerged seedlings. Cabbage seed pod weevil (Ceutorhynchus obstrictus), swede midge (Contarinia nasturtii), and tarnished plant bug (Lygus lineolaris) are also severe pests on canola. Minor pests include aphids (cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae and turnip aphid, Hyadaphis erysimi) and grasshopper, Melanoplus sanguinipes. This book: · is the only single compiled source of information on integrated management of canola and other Brassica oilseed pests · presents the biology and management of all the major and minor pests of Brassica oilseed crops · is an essential source of information for applied entomologists, crop protection researchers, extension agents and stakeholders

Taylor & Francis Inc Handbook of Environmental Fluid Dynamics, Volume Two: Systems, Pollution, Modeling, and Measurements
With major implications for applied physics, engineering, and the natural and social sciences, the rapidly growing area of environmental fluid dynamics focuses on the interactions of human activities, environment, and fluid motion. A landmark for the field, the two-volume Handbook of Environmental Fluid Dynamics presents the basic principles, fundamental flow processes, modeling techniques, and measurement methods used in the study of environmental motions. It also offers critical discussions of environmental sustainability related to engineering. The handbook features 81 chapters written by 135 renowned researchers from around the world. Covering environmental, policy, biological, and chemical aspects, it tackles important cross-disciplinary topics such as sustainability, ecology, pollution, micrometeorology, and limnology. Volume Two: Systems, Pollution, Modeling, and Measurements explores the interactions between engineered structures and anthropogenic activities that affect natural flows, with particular emphasis on environmental pollution. The book covers the numerical methodologies that underpin research, predictive modeling, and cyber-infrastructure developments. It also addresses practical aspects of laboratory experiments and field observations that validate quantitative predictions and help identify new phenomena and processes. As communities face existential challenges posed by climate change, rapid urbanization, and scarcity of water and energy, the study of environmental fluid dynamics becomes increasingly relevant. Penguin Random House India Dada Comrade
Partly autobiographical and Yashpal's first novel, Dada Comrade is an extraordinary book, fast-paced and philosophical by turn. It tells the story of a young revolutionary, Harish, who, towards the end of the 1930s, is expelled from his revolutionary party, which also plans to kill him as he knows too much. Meanwhile, he and Shailbala, a member of the party and the daughter of a wealthy Lahore industrialist, develop a romantic relationship. An unusual heroine, Shailbala is outspoken about sexual freedom and constantly challenges others about their patriarchal mindsets. As Harish escapes the party's clutches and organizes the railway workers of Lahore into striking en masse, he is framed by the British government that leads to his trial. Shailbala, on the other hand, confronts her father and decides to keep the child conceived with Harish. She finds a new ally in this decision-Dada, the ageing leader of Harish's revolutionary party who had earlier condemned him.Raising questions about the means to achieve freedom and equality, as well as about desire, marriage and birth control, Dada Comrade was far ahead of its time and heralded the arrival of a literary genius. Translated seamlessly and including a scholarly introduction by Simona Sawhney, it will resonate with and compel today's readers to examine their ideals and values.

Rowman & Littlefield The Stonemasons of Creuse in Nineteenth-Century Paris
This book connects the story of a group of migrant workers to the question of why Paris became the nineteenth century's 'capital of revolution,' and why this stage of the city ended. The stonemasons were well known for their skills, and their seasonal migration from central France, but especially for their role in rebellions. They were set apart by a persistent reputation tying them to the city's tumultuous history and to the revolutionary legacy of a physical location: the Place de Grève. Parisians and police saw the masons as part of the 'dangerous classes,' while to bosses they were 'docile.' This work draws upon research in archives and libraries, including the records of arrests, casualties, and compensation in rebellions, workers' memoirs, police reports, and studies of marchandage—a hated form of subcontracting whose history paralleled that of the masons.

Thinkers Publishing The Modernized Anti-Sicilians - Volume 2: Moscow Variation & Sidelines
This second and final volume of the Anti-Sicilian series covers our approach for all alternatives to 2…Nc6. The choice against 2…d6 was obvious. The Moscow variation is the only critical alternative to 3.d4 that has caused any concerns for Black – by developing with a tempo, we force Black to make an immediate decision on move 3 and wait for the right moment to open the position. Whilst in the Rossolimo book we have tried to achieve an objective advantage against every line, our choices in the Moscow were mainly selected by their ability to create practical difficulties for the opponent. Naturally, it is not possible to find an advantage in every variation but we have ensured to add many detailed explanations to guide plans and aid understanding in the various positions we’ll encounter
