Rizzoli International Publications Food & Freedom: How the Slow Food Movement Is Changing the World Through Gastronomy
Inspiring the global fight to revolutionize the way food is grown, distributed, and eaten. In the almost thirty years since Carlo Petrini began the Slow Food organization, he has been constantly engaged in the fight for food justice. Beginning first in his native Italy and then expanding all over the world, the movement has created a powerful force for change. The essential argument of this book is that food is an avenue towards freedom. This uplifting and humanistic message is straightforward: if people can feed themselves, they can be free. In other words, if people can regain control over access to their food-how it is produced, by whom, and how it is distributed-then that can lead to a greater empowerment in all channels of life. Whether in the Amazon jungle talking with tribal elders or on rice paddies in rural Indonesia, the author engages the reader through the excitement of his journeys and the passion of his mission. Here, Petrini reports upon some of the success stories that he has observed firsthand. From Chiapas to Puglia, Morocco to North Carolina, he has witnessed the many ways different peoples have dealt with food problems. This book allows us to learn from these case studies and lays out models for the future.

Rizzoli International Publications I Adulted!: Stickers for Grown-Ups

They still, as purportedly self-sufficient adults, look toward Baby Boomers and the Greatest Generation and think, How did they do that? So the easiest and best way to find comfort is to look not ahead at uncertainty (or, heaven forbid, around at the chaos currently surrounding them), but to the past to their simpler childhoods. The generation who championed the coloring book-as- relaxation trend grew up in a world in which they spent hours obsessing over, trading, and decorating with stickers. And it is with brightly colored stickers that they will finally find peace of mind. For a little while, at least. Filled with 100 full-color removable stickers that can be used to decorate journals, notebooks, or your lapel to proudly and publicly proclaim life s little victories, I Adulted! is the ideal nostalgic and practical book for anyone who feels a sense of accomplishment by making it through a day without calling their mother for help.

Rizzoli International Publications Venice and the Doges: Six Hundred Years of Architecture, Monuments, and Sculpture
A feast for the eyes and an entertaining, erudite read, this book opens with an illustrated survey of the 120 doges who led the Venetian Republic before continuing with a detailed survey of the incredible array of sculptures and monuments that memorialize them. Although celebrated for painting and music, Venice has a sculptural tradition that was overshadowed by Florence and Rome. Based on new scholarship, this volume reveals the true magnificence of six centuries of Venetian sculpture. With the oldest works dating to the thirteenth century, these masterpieces fill the city s churches and include pieces by great masters from the Lombardo family to Antonio Rizzo, Jacopo Sansovino, Alessandro Vittoria, and Baldassare Longhena. The sculptural marvels of Venice tell the story of a procession of doges politicians, scholars, conquerors, merchants, and even a saint, Pietro Orseolo over a thousand-year history. Engaging text highlights the adventurous, eventful, and sometimes glorious lives of these legendary figures, while the newly commissioned photography showcases the grandeur and beauty of a neglected aspect of Venice s cultural history.

Rizzoli International Publications I Care a Lotta, I Wear Collina Strada
A mind-bending archive of Collina Strada, the downtown New York brand that puts self-expression and honest sustainability first. Launched in 2008 by Hilary Taymour, Collina Strada has spent the last decade successfully injecting the generally colorless style of downtown New York with acid-colored dye jobs, off-kilter dresses, sparkling hair pins, and fearlessly fluid ensembles. Rooted in interconnectedness, self-expression, and thoughtful production, the brand screams nonconformity: cosmically dyed dresses, rhinestone-studded water bottles, and wildly graphic bodysuits serve as representations of the cacophony of sounds, symbols, and spirit that imbue the Collina Strada world. All of the brand s pieces are produced in the USA using mostly reinterpreted deadstock materials: recycled t-shirts from Kantamanto Market in Accra, Ghana, and Rose Sylk, an organic cellulose fiber derived from rose bushes and their stems. Taymour has also shown an unwavering commitment to using the brand as a platform for social and environmental change, offering guests at her shows instructions on how to advocate for a rooftop garden in their building and ways to volunteer with vetted organizations.. Gathered within (and printed on FSC certified paper) is a collection of iconic brand imagery, runway images, core pieces, and creative collaborations with artists like Dave Mattingly, the artist behind the iconic 90s book series Animorphs. A visual feast art directed by artist and photographer Charlie Engman, this volume is an exciting style compendium that offers endless inspiration on being confident, conscious, and radically individual.

Rizzoli International Publications Banksy
This monograph gathers and presents the largest assemblage in one volume about the life, work, and ideas of Banksy - the world's most discussed artist of recent decades. Featuring hundreds of works - Girl with Balloon, Mickey Snake, Dismaland, Love is in the Air, Barcode, Monkey Queen -- the book includes reproductions of paintings, serigraphs, and stencils. The most iconic works are here, but so too are numerous installation objects and a selection of memorabilia all with the official approval of Pest Control, the group that manages all things Banksy. Banksy is considered the world's greatest practitioner of street art at work today. His work has always implied political critiques - of inequality, injustice, discrimination, consumerism, pollution, and the establishment. But, Banksy is a ghost -- no one knows his identity. He is an exemplary case of fame and notoriety built upon absence, anonymity, and the denial of one's explicit contribution to the public debate if not in terms of creative activism. Banksy's relationship with the art market is also complex: at the same time mocking, distant, and hostile and yet all he does is based upon a marketing logic that has proven to be among the most effective ever attempted. In short, an apparent (or real) contradiction between adhesion to the market and ferocious criticism of the market itself. This volume is published to coincide with a major traveling exhibition of over one hundred Banksy works, but it is sure to be a must have for art lovers and Banksy fans alike for years to come.

Rizzoli International Publications Auto America: Car Culture 1950s-1970s: Photographs By John G. Zimmerman
American Auto offers a compelling look at three decades (from the 1950s to the 1970s) of America s fascination with the automobile. At a time when self-driving vehicles and climate change are transforming driving around the world, Zimmerman s pictures capture the optimism and even utopianism of a beloved period in American car culture. Many of Zimmerman s photographs were originally taken for Life, Time, and Sports Illustrated magazines and highlight diverse aspects of America s auto industry at its zenith; they feature not only iconic cars of the period, which Zimmerman chronicled comprehensively at car shows and in studio assignments throughout the period, but also a behind-the-scenes look at the people who designed, built, collected, exhibited, and raced them. With more than 200 photographs, drawing on the Zimmerman Archive s collection including his best-known photographs of Fords, Chryslers, and GMs in their heyday alongside ephemera, tear sheets, outtakes, and contacts from his assignments the book celebrates the automobile s central place in American culture during those decades when the timeless silhouettes of classic cars ruled the roads.

Rizzoli International Publications Palm Beach Style: Architecture and Advocacy of John and Jane Volk, The
Palm Beach style is the expression of elegance and romance everywhere evident in this paradise and epitomized in the lives and work of architect John Volk and artist-preservationist Jane Volk. Together they conjured up much of the magic that now makes the place. The book explores this unique chemistry and the dazzling homes that are the result. John Volk was one of the 'big five' architects of Palm Beach. It was here, during his sixty years of practice, that he was commissioned to design over 2,000 projects, among them the Royal Poinciana Plaza as well as additions and renovations to the Everglades Club. This book is about the Volks, and the part they played in conjuring the spell with which Palm Beach continues to enchant. Palm Beach, among other things, is its architecture. Red tile roofs and cast stone columns hint of the Mediterranean. Evidence of inspirations from Spain and Morocco abound. After the economic collapse of 1929, the classical architectural orders began to appear on columns and porticos. The Bermuda style and Modernism made an appearance later. Yet there is no one style exclusively associated Volk; here he perfected many styles and his architectural legacy can be found on almost every street. While this book honors John Volk s architecture and his enormous impact, it also celebrates Jane Volk s contribution to Palm Beach and her devotion to protecting the town and its historic character.

Rizzoli International Publications Hurvin Anderson
The Birmingham-born, Turner Prize-nominated artist Hurvin Anderson is best known for his brightly painted, densely detailed landscapes and interior scenes, which are drawn from his own photographs, sketches and personal recollections particularly those relating to his upbringing in the Afro-Caribbean community in the Midlands, as well as more recent trips to the Caribbean. Anderson s luscious paintings have hybridity at their heart. A tug-of-war plays out between abstraction and figuration, nature versus the manmade, beauty and menace, and his British and Jamaican heritage. Born in the United Kingdom as a member of the Jamaican diaspora, Anderson relates to the Caribbean as both insider and outsider, aware of the mythmaking that the idea of lost or future paradise generates. Anderson, the youngest of eight children, grew up listening to his family reminisce about their lives in the Caribbean before they moved to England in the 1960s, an emotional through-line to his work, suggesting the longing and loss that keeps certain geographies alive in us. This book, Anderson s first major monograph, has been carefully curated by the artists himself and includes paintings, sketches, source material and ephemera, studio shots, and a series of black-and-white drawings created exclusively for this publication. The volume also features an in-depth and deeply considered essay by art historian Catherine Lampert, a text by poet and writer Roger Robinson, and an illustrated chronology.

From the first ever sketch of the Red Cross logo by its founder Clara Barton to a cartoon scrawled on a love letter from Charles Bukowski, the objects in this fascinating collection are a perfect reflection of the eclectic and storied cast of characters from whose archives they ve been collected over the years. Organized alphabetically, with a range of influential names, from William Burroughs to Mark Twain, the book is a voyeur s treasure trove of the ephemeral, in which cultural icons reveal their own preoccupations, passions, plans, and distractions in the marginalia of their daily correspondence. A satirical sketch by Marc Chagall sits beside a quick self-portrait by Charlie Chaplin; a throwaway drawing on a dollar bill by Joan Miro follows the first ever idle iteration of Pippi Long stocking by Astrid Lindgren; and a hasty drawing by Andy Warhol precedes a sketch of Falstaff on a hotel notepad by Orson Welles. A treat for lovers of the analogue in the digital age, and reproduced beautifully on uncoated paper to come as close as possible to the texture of the originals, Scrawl connects high and low, art and science, history and literature, youth and age, with the universal truth of doodling.

Rizzoli International Publications Making L.A. Modern: Craig Ellwood - Myth, Man, Designer
Craig Ellwood, the Cary Grant of architecture, was one of the most visible faces of California mid-century modernism. He was known as much for his exquisitely designed, minimalist structures as he was for his exuberant lifestyle. This book celebrates and explores the glamour of Ellwood s work, life, myth, and career. Through photographs, primarily of the iconic houses he designed in Southern California during the 1950s and 60s, we see a life of refined decadence, expressed through gorgeous architecture, fast cars, beautiful women, Hollywood style, palm trees, swimming pools, and minimalist design all in the context of the Southern California postwar building boom. This volume will appeal to design junkies, architecture buffs, students of modernism, and anyone interested in problem-solving and elegant solutions.

Rizzoli International Publications Takashi Murakami: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg
Takashi Murakami (b. 1962), one of contemporary art s most widely recognized exponents, receives a long-awaited critical consideration in this important volume. Accompanying the first retrospective exhibition devoted solely to Murakami s paintings, this book traces Murakami s career from his earliest training to his current studio practice. Where other books address the commercial aspects of Murakami s work, this is the first serious survey of his work as a painter. Through essays and illustrations many previously unpublished it explores the artist s relationship to the tradition of Japanese painting and his facility in straddling high and low, ancient and modern, Eastern and Western, commercial and high art. New texts address Murakami s output in the context of postwar Japan, situating the artist in relation to folklore, traditional Japanese painting, the Tokyo art scene in the 1980s and 1990s, and the threat of nuclear annihilation. This richly illustrated volume also includes a detailed biography and exhibition history. Takashi Murakami is a true essential for collectors and fans alike.

Rizzoli International Publications Peter Doig
In every generation of artists, there are a few who propose a new set of ques- tions and alter the way we understand art. Peter Doig is such an artist. This handsome monograph considers the painter's entire career, beginning with the early work produced in the 1990s when Doig's enigmatic but wholly new conception of painting was first introduced to audiences. Doig was born to Scottish parents, spent several years as a child in Trinidad, later settling in Canada for his formative early teen years. He found his voice while at art school in London, albeit one that was out of step with the work of the time (much of it installation-based and dripping with neo-conceptualist leanings). He had developed a small following of fellow artists and critics when the rest of the art world caught up and took notice. In 2002, he left London for Trinidad, where he has remained. The small Caribbean island-with its own distinctive light and landscape-has deeply influenced his recent work. This volume was designed in close collaboration with the artist, with a cover and various interior elements created especially by the artist.
