GB Publishing Org Plants & Us: how they shape human history & society
A completely new look at plants - not only in food, drink and commerce, and how they have created civilisation, trade and empires, but also in love, in war, in crime, in horror and delight, in music, poetry and prose, and on the screen. Not just another gardening or plant book, this is a complete picture of how plants affect people, for better or worse, now, in the past and in the future with illuminating and startling facts about their ubiquitous presence in human affairs - through life, death, illness, happiness, murder, despair, desperation, love, hate, loss, and far more. From Presidents to pop stars, from scientists to slavers, royals to religious leaders, chefs to charlatans, pioneers to politicians, artists to actors, Plants & Us is a unique overview of plants, wild and cultivated, their vital importance and the threats they face. Above all, how they affect all our lives in stories that will often surprise the reader.

Peter Lang International Academic Publishers Print, Politics and the Provincial Press in Modern Britain
The provincial newspaper was read by peers, politicians and the proletariat alike. It is striking, however, how limited a range of newspapers and journals are offered for analysis in most historical studies of the political media in modern Britain. The predominance of the London political press and Punch in academic discourse appears to derive largely from the easy availability of these papers and journals to modern scholars rather than their actual distribution and popularity. Consequently, there has been hitherto a distinct lack of attention given to the British regional press by historians. This collection aims to correct this imbalance by investigating the development, maturation and persistence of the provincial political press in the British Isles in the modern era. Chapters covering aspects of the Irish, Yorkshire, Welsh, Scottish and Midlands political press are included to ensure a representative geographical spread of provincial Britain. These chapters cover previously neglected aspects of print culture, political literacy and reading practices across the regions of Britain in the late eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to offer an introduction to research in this burgeoning field of study.

Wordsworth Editions Ltd Great Expectations
Considered by many to be Dickens' finest novel, Great Expectations traces the growth of the book's narrator, Philip Pirrip (Pip), from a boy of shallow dreams to a man with depth of character. From its famous dramatic opening on the bleak Kentish marshes, the story abounds with some of Dickens' most memorable characters. Among them are the kindly blacksmith Joe Gargery, the mysterious convict Abel Magwitch, the eccentric Miss Haversham and her beautiful ward Estella, Pip's good-hearted room-mate Herbert Pocket and the pompous Pumblechook. As Pip unravels the truth behind his own 'great expectations' in his quest to become a gentleman, the mysteries of the past and the convolutions of fate through a series of thrilling adventures serve to steer him towards maturity and his most important discovery of all - the truth about himself.

The University Press of Kentucky Black Officer White Navy
In Black Officer, White Navy, Lieutenant Commander Reuben Keith Green shares a compelling and enthralling account of how, as a Black man in the postVietnam War era, he navigated his unique career path from high school dropout to unrestricted line officer in the US Navy. Weaving history with personal narrative, Green''s engaging, raw, and insightful storytelling style provides an insider''s analysis of what was happening within the navy, ultimately exposing systemic racism throughout the US military. Using the power of the pen, he offers uninhibited accounts of sometimes life-threatening confrontations that resulted from personal and institutional racial bias, describing what it was like to sail second class in the navy. Green, who retired as a decorated surface-warfare officer in the mid-1990s, presents an eye-opening account of the challenges, discrimination, and resistance he faced while serving in the military. Through it all, Green''s characteristic sense of humor and honesty shine

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Financial Markets and the Real Economy
This insightful collection examines the intersection between macroeconomics and finance. The key challenge in this area is to find the right measure of 'bad times' (the marginal value of wealth) to explain some assets' high average returns or low prices as compensation for those assets' tendency to pay off poorly in bad times. The volume includes a carefully chosen selection of articles that survey the various approaches to this question - including the equity premium, consumption based models, general equilibrium models and labour income/idiosyncratic risk approaches. The editor also provides a comprehensive introduction which sets these papers in context and surveys the broader literature.

Equinox Publishing Ltd The Arabs and the Scramble for Africa
This book examines the history of the European Scramble for Africa from the perspective of the Omanis and other Arabs in East Africa. It will be of interest not only to African specialists, but also those working on the Middle East, where awareness is now emerging that the history of those settled on the southern peripheries of Arabia has been intimately entwined with Indian Ocean maritime activities since pre-Islamic times. The nineteenth century, however, saw these maritime borderlands being increasingly drawn into a new world economy, one of whose effects was the development of an ivory front in the interior of the continent that, by the 1850s, led the Omanis and Swahili to establish themselves on the Upper Congo. A reconstruction of their history and their interaction with Europeans is a major theme of this book. European colonial rivalries in Africa is not a subject in vogue today, while the Arabs are still largely viewed as invaders and slavers. The fact that the British separated the Sultanates of Muscat and Zanzibar is reflected in European research so that historians have little grasp of the geographic, tribal and religious continuum that persisted between overseas empire and the Omani homeland. Ibadism is regarded as irrelevant to the mainstream of Islamic religious protest whereas, during the lead up to establishing direct colonial rule, its ideology played a significant role; even the final rally against the Belgians in the Congo was conducted in the name of an Imam al-Muslimin. Back home, the fall out from the British massacre that crushed the last Arab attempt to reassert independence in Zanzibar was an important contributory cause towards the re-founding of an Imamate that survived until the mid-1950s.

The British Isles including Ireland are a unique tapestry of islands off NW Europe. Though there are thousands of islands making up this archipelago, a modest 223 are permanently inhabited, mostly in the Gaelic, Irish and Welsh or Celtic west. Though some are vibrant modern-day communities, many are small and with declining populations, clinging onto survival in the North Atlantic. Their rich history of oppression from first Viking through to more recently English rulers over the centuries has made the islanders resilient and unique in culture with a rich identity forming a unique Celtic diaspora. The journey starts in the Scilly Isles and slowly weaves its way through the Hebrides (Inner and Outer), the Northern Isles (Orkney and Shetland) whilst taking in the more obscure islands off the West coast of Ireland from County Cork to County Donegal. Travel is by all types of vessels, bridge and causeway links and at low tide simply walking the distances from the mainland. Most a

“Boy Thing is a thing of wonder. These are poems that negotiate anew the tender, hurt territory of a boy abruptly unfathered with every fresh reading; and that travel into the wonderment of becoming a father of boys. We are given a boy’s-eye-view of 1970s Cornwall with a music and detail so meticulous that we yearn with Clarke for its lost territories. But these are not just poems of archive or archaeology; they are revelatory, dynamic and raw. Clarke is crucially attuned to the secret messages received in boyhood – its preoccupations and awakenings, epiphanies and abuses, and its shames. This book is unmissable: human and humane, grimy and sublime.” - Fiona Benson “Boy Thing is a beautiful book – sensual, atmospheric, full of nature and ritual. These poems while formally precise, possess a rawness that is startling and utterly compelling.” - Ella Frears
