This book is an experiment on constructing a text starting — exclusively and strictly — from the materials of an architectural project. As in an archive, it contains all the documents produced by the design team, which become the only sources of a text that allows the reader to generalise the project’s contents and reflect on its process. An extensive masterplan is transforming the abandoned industrial area of Shougang, on the outskirts of Beijing, into one of the venues for the 2022 Winter Olympics Games. Within this process, the China Room, as a research centre of the Politecnico di Torino dedicated to urbanisation and architecture in China, was involved by Tsinghua University in the transformation of the former oxygen factory into a visitor centre, working on industrial memory as a lever for a renovation of the existing aimed at the overall sustainability of the masterplan. The book overviews and analyses the most important steps that transformed initial design intentions into a defined proposal, passing through different solutions, changes, debates, and negotiations among the different stakeholders called into action along the whole process. Telling the story of this architectural project means thinking about the ways of designing across different contexts in the global market. More particularly, the story is about the skills and experiences that Academia puts in place by addressing real transformation projects through research, with respect to professional practice modalities. In addition, the book is intended to make design practicing transparent to the reader, capable to move around the genesis of the project following the many trajectories occurred along the whole process, similarly to an open archive: retrospectively the final image of the building will incorporate architectural elements brought by socio-technical decisions, enlarging the spectrum of design agency from single authorship to a larger collective of involved stakeholders. Among the project documents, a recurring drawing guided the project exchange between the Politecnico and Tsinghua teams during the two years of joint design work. The cross-section of the factory was the point of comparison about the relationship with the structural skeleton of the original factory and the vertical organisation of the project: from the public playground on the ground floor to the intensive exploitation of the intermediate levels, to the roof that seeks new relationships with the competition area and the natural landscape.

Foundations of the relativistic quantum mechanics and field theory of arbitrary spin are presented. New relativistic wave equations without redundant components for the particle-antiparticle doublets of arbitrary spin are considered. The comparison with known arbitrary spin equations of Bhabha, Bargman-Wigner and with Pauli-Fierz, Rarita-Schwinger equations (for the spin s=3/2) demonstrates the advantages of the presented approach. The special procedure of synthesis of higher spin relativistic wave equations is suggested. New equations are considered on three levels of (i) relativistic canonical quantum mechanics, (ii) canonical Foldy-Wouthuysen type field theory, and (iii) manifestly covariant field theory. The derivation of field equations based on the start from the relativistic canonical quantum mechanics is given. The corresponding transition operator, which is the extended Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, is suggested and described. This model of relativistic quantum mechanics is described here on the level of von Neumann's consideration of non-relativistic case. The Lagrange approach for the spinor field in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation is analyzed. The proof of the Fermi-Bose duality property of a few main equations of field theory, which before were known to have only single Fermi (or single Bose) property, is given. Hidden Bose properties (symmetry, solutions, and conservation laws) of the Dirac equation are proved. Both cases of non-zero and zero mass are considered. New useful mathematical objects, which are the pure matrix representations of the 64-dimensional Clifford and 28-dimensional SO(8) algebras over the field of real numbers, are put into consideration. The application of such algebras to the Dirac and Dirac-like equations properties analysis is demonstrated. Fermi and Bose SO(4) symmetries of the relativistic hydrogen atom are found. New symmetries and solutions of the Maxwell equations are considered. The Maxwell equations in the form, having maximal symmetry, are suggested and described. The application of such field-strength equations to the atomic microworld phenomena is demonstrated. On the basis of such Maxwell system the relativistic hydrogen atom spectrum and quantum properties of this atom are described. The Sommerfeld-Dirac fine structure formula, Plank constant and the Bohr postulates are derived in the frameworks of classical electrodynamics. The limits and boarders of classical physics applications in inneratomic microworld are discussed. In order to determine the place of our approach among other investigations the 26 variants of the Dirac equation derivation are considered.

A single word - Auschwitz - is often used to encapsulate the totality of persecution and suffering involved in what we call the Holocaust. Yet a focus on a single concentration camp - however horrific what happened there, however massively catastrophic its scale - leaves an incomplete story, a truncated history. It cannot fully communicate the myriad ways in which individuals became tangled up on the side of the perpetrators, and obscures the diversity of experiences among a wide range of victims as they struggled and died, or managed, against all odds, to survive. In the process, we also miss the continuing legacy of Nazi persecution across generations, and across continents. Mary Fulbrook's encompassing book attempts to expand our understanding, exploring the lives of individuals across a full spectrum of suffering and guilt, each one capturing one small part of the greater story. The waning influence of the Catholic church in the ethical and political debate For centuries the Catholic Church was able to impose her ethical rules in matters related to the intimate, that is, questions concerning life (from its beginning until its end) and the family, in the so-called Catholic countries in Western Europe. When the polity started to introduce legislation that was in opposition to the Catholic ethic, the ecclesiastical authorities and part of the population reacted. The media reported massive manifestations in France against same-sex marriages and in Spain against the de-penalization of abortion. In Italy the Episcopal conference entered the political field in opposition to the relaxation of several restrictive legal rules concerning medically assisted procreation and exhorted the voters to abstain from voting so that the referendum did not obtain the necessary quorum. In Portugal, to the contrary, the Church made a “pact” with the prime minister so that the law on same-sex marriages did not include the possibility of adoption. And in Belgium the Episcopal conference limited its actions to clearly expressing with religious, legal, and anthropological arguments its opposition to such laws, which all other Episcopal conferences did also.In this book, the authors analyse the full spectrum of the issue, including the emergence of such laws; the political discussions; the standpoints defended in the media by professionals, ethicists, and politicians; the votes in the parliaments; the political interventions of the Episcopal conferences; and the attitude of professionals.
