As discrete fields of inquiry, rhetoric and mathematics have long been considered antithetical to each other. That is, if mathematics explains or describes the phenomena it studies with certainty, persuasion is not needed. This volume calls into question the view that mathematics is free of rhetoric. Through nine studies of the intersections between these two disciplines, Arguing with Numbers shows that mathematics is in fact deeply rhetorical. Using rhetoric as a lens to analyze mathematically based arguments in public policy, political and economic theory, and even literature, the essays in this volume reveal how mathematics influences the values and beliefs with which we assess the world and make decisions and how our worldviews influence the kinds of mathematical instruments we construct and accept. International scholars offer ethnographic analyses of the relations between transnationalism, law, and culture The recent surge of right-wing populism in Europe and the United States is widely perceived as evidence of ongoing challenges to the policies and institutions of globalization. But as editors Carol J. Greenhouse and Christina L. Davis observe in their introduction to Landscapes of Law, the appeal to national culture is not restricted to the ethno-nationalisms of the developing world outside of industrial democracies nor to insurgent groups within them. The essays they have collected in this volume reveal how claims of national culture emerge in the pursuit of transnationalism and, under some circumstances, become embedded within international law. The premise that there is inherent tension between nationalism and globalism is misleading. Whether asserted explicitly as state sovereignty or implicitly as cultural community, claims of national culture mediate how governments assert their interests and values when engaging with transnational law. Landscapes of Law demonstrates how nationalism operates in the contested zone between borderless capital and bordered states. Neotectonics involves the study of the motions and deformations of the Earth's crust that are current or recent in geologic time. The Mediterranean region is one of the most important regions for neotectonics and related natural hazards. This volume focuses on the neotectonics of the Eastern Mediterranean region, which has experienced many major extensive earthquakes, including the devastating Izmit, Turkey earthquake on August 17, 1999. The event lasted for 37 seconds, killing around 17,000 people, injuring 44,000 people, and leaving approximately half a million people homeless. Since then, several North American, European, and Turkish research groups have studied the neotectonics and earthquake potential of the region using different geological and geophysical methods, including GPS studies, geodesy, and passive source seismology. Some results from their studies were presented in major North American and European geological meetings. This volume highlights the work involving the Eastern Mediterranean region, which has one of the world's longest and best studied active strike-slip (horizontal motion) faults: the east-west trending North Anatolian fault zone, which is very similar to the San Andreas fault in California. Ernest Francisco Fenollosa (1857-1908), often cited as the father of Japanese art, is also the founder of the Japanese art collection at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, one of the finest collections in the field. This publication is the facsimile reprint and its transcription of the only remaining notebook of Fenollosa and will make available for the first time the catalogue of his collection of Japanese paintings described by the collector himself. The remarkable point of this notebook is that Fenollosa mentions his opinions on Japanese art in his own voice whereas many of his other writings both in English and Japanese are often modified by editors or translators as many of them were published posthumously.The notebook consists of four parts; the title page, the preface, the catalogue and the index. Each entry of the catalogue includes the artist name and the title of painting followed by "commentaries and notes" which show interesting, suggestive and sometimes critical views on each painting. Fenollosa sold the collection of Japanese art to Dr. Charles Goddard Weld, another Bostonian collector, with the understanding that it was to remain permanently in the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston as the Fenollosa-Weld collection. Though some items catalogued in this notebook are no longer in the Museum’s collection, the majority of the masterpieces in the catalogue are still held there and we can appreciate their images in the museum’s website with the new commentaries based on today’s studies, which are quite different from the ones in this notebook by Fenollosa. In the transcribed entry of each item in this volume the accession numbers to the MFA’s database are added for the easy reference to the original works. With a new introduction and editor’s notes by Seichi Yamaguchi, the leading expert on Ernest Francisco Fenollosa, this catalogue is a vital source of information for those who study Japanese art and Japonisme and its reception in the US and the West.

The idea that the world, not only of man but also of nature, was subject to a continuous process of change has taken strong root since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Borġ in-Nadur, on the south-east coast of the island of Malta, is a major multi-period site, with archaeological remains that span several thousand years. In the course of the Late Neolithic, the steep-sided ridge was occupied by a large megalithic temple complex that was re-occupied in the succeeding Bronze Age. In the course of the second millennium BC, the ridge was heavily fortified by a massive wall to protect a settlement of huts. Excavations were carried out here in 1881 and again in 1959. This volume brings together a number of contributions that report on those excavations, providing an exhaustive account of the stratigraphy, the pottery, the lithic assemblages, the bones, and the molluscs. Additional studies look at other sites in Malta and in neighbouring Sicily in an effort to throw light on the late prehistory of the south-central Mediterranean at a period when connections with regions near and far were increasing. The volume forms a companion to another monograph which concentrated on the temple remains at Borġ in-Nadur (D. Tanasi and N. C.
