John Wiley and Sons Ltd Loft Conversions
Pressure on space and changes in planning law mean that loft conversions are now at the forefront in the race to improve the performance of Britain's ageing housing stock. Since 1990, roof space conversions have increased UK housing capacity by more than 200 million square feet - a living area equivalent to a medium-sized city - without the loss of a single square foot of greenfield land.Loft Conversions is the definitive technical guide to the conversion of roof spaces in single family dwellings. It brings together a wealth of practical and regulatory guidance in a form that is easy to read and comprehensively illustrated. This fully revised and updated second edition is intended primarily for architects, builders, surveyors and others professionally involved in the process of loft conversion. The insights it provides are also invaluable to self-builders and to householders wishing to achieve a deeper understanding of what a loft conversion involves.

Instituto Monsa de Ediciones Modular Loft
In the ingenious projects presented in this book, planners make creative use of construction techniques, often artisanal, to create flexible-use living environments that optimize the use of space. Some recurring elements in this type of planning are enclosures that integrate and conceal furnishings, new lofts that take advantage of underutilised interior height, furniture that can be moved to differentiate areas, and independent volumes that focus functional areas.

Damiani The Loft Law
Joshua Charow is a documentary photographer and filmmaker based in New York City. His projects aim to unveil hidden stories and subcultures around New York. He seeks to understand and explore the people at the center of these stories. As a teenager, Josh would escape his suburban New Jersey town and go to New York City in order to climb skyscrapers, bridges, and visit abandoned subway stations. This subculture introduced Josh to photography as he wanted to document these off-limits locations as he risked his life to visit them. Josh went on to study film and television at NYU Tisch. He currently works as a cinematographer and recently shot 'Untrapped', a feature documentary that premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival and reached #3 on the Amazon Prime Video US Movies chart. He also worked as a cinematographer on Hulu's new docuseries, 'apCaviar Presents'. In 2021, Josh made a short documentary for TIME Magazine about James Maroon, who cleans the 9/11 memorial reflect

University of California Press Loft Jazz: Improvising New York in the 1970s
The New York loft jazz scene of the 1970s was a pivotal period for uncompromising, artist-produced work. Loft Jazz provides the first book-length study of this period, tracing its history amid a series of overlapping discourses surrounding collectivism, urban renewal, experimentalist aesthetics, underground archives, and the radical politics of self-determination.

Rutgers University Press Loft Living: Culture and Capital in Urban Change
Since its initial publication, Loft Living has become the classic analysis of the emergence of artists as a force of gentrification and the related rise of “creative city” policies around the world. This 25th anniversary edition, with a new introduction, illustrates how loft living has spread around the world and that artists’ districts—trailing the success of SoHo in New York—have become a global tourist attraction. Sharon Zukin reveals the economic shifts and cultural transformations that brought widespread attention to artists as lifestyle models and agents of urban change, and explains their role in attracting investors and developers to the derelict loft districts where they made their home.Prescient and dramatic, Loft Living shows how a declining downtown Manhattan became a popular “scene,” how loft apartments became hot commodities for the middle class, and how investors, corporations, and rich elites profited from deindustrializing the city’s factory districts and turning them into trendy venues for art galleries, artisanal restaurants, and bars. However, this edition points out that the artists who led the trend are now priced out of the loft market. Even in New York, where the loft living market was born, artists have no legal claim on loft districts, nor do they get any preferential treatment in the harsh real estate market. From the story of SoHo in Lower Manhattan to SoWa in Boston and SoMa in San Francisco, Zukin explains how once-edgy districts are transformed into high-price neighborhoods, and how no city can restrain the juggernaut of rising property values.

St Martin's Press The Loft Generation: From the de Koonings to Twombly: Portraits and Sketches, 1942-2011
The Loft Generation: From the de Koonings to Twombly; Portraits and Sketches, 1942–2011 is an invaluable account by an artist at the center of a landmark era in American art. Edith Schloss writes about the painters, poets, and musicians who were part of the postwar movements and about her life as an artist in New York and later in Italy, where she continued to paint and write until her death in 2011. Schloss was born in Germany and moved to New York City during World War II. She became part of a thriving community of artists and intellectuals that included Elaine and Willem de Kooning, Larry Rivers, John Cage, and Frank O’Hara. She married the photographer and filmmaker Rudy Burckhardt. She was both a working artist and an incisive critic, and was a candid and gimlet-eyed witness of the close-knit community that was redefining the world of art. In Italy she spent time with Giorgio Morandi, Cy Twombly, Meret Oppenheim, and Francesca Woodman. In The Loft Generation, Schloss creates a rare and irreplaceable up-close record of an era of artistic innovation and the colorful characters who made it happen. There is no other book like it. Her canny observations are indispensable reading for all critics and researchers of this vital period in American art.

The University of Chicago Press The Jazz Loft Project: Photographs and Tapes of W. Eugene Smith from 821 Sixth Avenue, 1957–1965
Reissue of an acclaimed collection of images from photographer W. Eugene Smith’s time in a New York City loft among jazz musicians. In 1957, Eugene Smith walked away from his longtime job at Life and the home he shared with his wife and four children to move into a dilapidated, five-story loft building at 821 Sixth Avenue in New York City’s wholesale flower district. The loft was the late-night haunt of musicians, including some of the biggest names in jazz—Charles Mingus, Zoot Sims, Bill Evans, and Thelonious Monk among them. Here, from 1957 to 1965, he made nearly 40,000 photographs and approximately 4,000 hours of recordings of musicians. Smith found solace in the chaotic, somnambulistic world of the loft and its artists, and he turned his documentary impulses away from work on his major Pittsburg photo essay and toward his new surroundings. Smith’s Jazz Loft Project has been legendary in the worlds of art, photography, and music for more than forty years, but until the publication of this book, no one had seen his extraordinary photographs or read any of the firsthand accounts of those who were there and lived to tell the tales.

Yale University Press Rituals of Rented Island: Object Theater, Loft Performance, and the New Psychodrama—Manhattan, 1970–1980
In this important volume, Jay Sanders and J. Hoberman explore the vibrant underground performance art scene of 1970s New York. Focusing on little-known and long-forgotten works, which were often performed in live/work lofts, storefronts, and alternative spaces of the city’s SoHo district, often for an audience comprising a handful of fellow artists, this catalogue makes newly visible a critical period in the development of performance art.Rituals of Rented Island examines the disparate yet related practices of twenty artists, including Stuart Sherman; collaborators Yvonne Rainer and Babette Mangotle; Julia Heyward; Jill Kroesen; Richard Foreman; Squat Theatre; composer-musician John Zorn; and legendary playwright and filmmaker Jack Smith; among others. With an array of previously unpublished images, including installation photographs, scripts, handwritten notes, and other ephemera, drawn from the artists’ own archives, this volume illuminates the eccentric singularities of the performance art of this era and its relevance today.Distributed for the Whitney Museum of American ArtExhibition Schedule:Whitney Museum of American Art (10/31/13–02/02/14)
