Fairleigh Dickinson University Press Francis Rawdon-Hastings Marguess of Hastings: Soldier, Peer of the Realm, Governor-General of India
Considering the importance of Francis Rawdon-Hastings, 1st Marquess of Hastings and 2nd Earl of Moira, it is surprising that no full-length biography has been written about him. The only significant studies of his career have been analysis of his role as governor-general of India in the early nineteenth century. Paul David Nelson's study rectifies this situation by providing a well-crafted scholarly analysis of the life of Lord Hastings. He covers in depth all aspects of the man's multifaceted career as a professional soldier, peer in the House of Lords, and governor-general of India. He also provides a character study of this intelligent, affable man, pointing out his strengths as a father, husband, and friend. In the process, Nelson does not lose sight of Hastings's personal ineptitude. He shows how the marquess ran up debts of nearly 1,000,000 by the time of his death and left his family almost penniless. The most important role that Hastings played was as a soldier in the British army. He was a young officer during the American war, fighting at Bunker Hill in 1775 as a lieutenant in the grenadier company of the 5th Regiment. Distinguishing himself, he was promoted captain and appointed aide-de-camp to General Henry Clinton. He went on to lead the Volunteers of Ireland, serve as adjutant general under Clinton, and to command an independent army in South Carolina in 1780-81. As governor-general of India from 1813 to 1823, he successfully led campaigns against the Nepalese, Pindaris, and Marathas. Hastings's second most important role was as an administrator in India. Although supported by able civilian subordinates, he sometimes made poor choices in his own appointments and became mired in the cloudy dealings of the Palmer Company. He was not guilty of any chicanery, but his reputation was marred by his defense of some questionable company activities. Hastings's third role was as a politician in the House of Lords. Here he was least successful, partly because he was not ruthless enough to rise to the

Inter-Varsity Press Sex and Money: Empty Pleasures, Satisfying Grace
Pleasure. We live in a world obsessed with finding it, passionate about enjoying it and desperate about maintaining it. Chief among such objects of affection are sex and money â€" two pleasures unequalled in their power to captivate our attention and demand our worship. Paul David Tripp pulls back the curtain on the lies of our flesh and the ways we distort God’s good gifts, examining the insanity of our culture and exposing our tendency to fall prey to the hollow promises of this world. In exploring how God’s grace frees us from futile pursuits, Tripp directs readers to the wisdom of God in Scripture and the liberating power of the gospel, offering practical guidance on finding true joy and lasting satisfaction. With his customary blend of honesty, humour, challenge and sound scriptural application, he offers wise and timely advice on how to break free. Unbound Last Dance at the Discotheque for Deviants: Unbound Firsts 2023 Title
** The venue was the canteen block of the Red Hammer Cement Works. It was the usual set-up: way out of town, secretive directions to get there, and disco lights blazing… Moscow, 1993. The end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union have brought unimaginable change to Russia. With this change come new freedoms: freedom to travel abroad and to befriend Westerners, freedom to make money, and even the freedom for an underground gay scene to take root.Encouraged by the new climate of openness, twenty-one-year-old Kostya ventures out of the closet and resolves to pursue his dreams: to work in the theatre and to find love as his idol Tchaikovsky never could. Those dreams, however, lead to tragedy – not only for Kostya, but for his mother and for the two young men he loves, as all three face up to the ways they have betrayed him.Last Dance at the Discotheque for Deviants is both a gripping thriller and a poignant, very human tale of people beset by forces beyond their control, in a world where all the old certainties have crumbled and it’s far from clear what will eventually take their place.

Yale University Press Fake Silk: The Lethal History of Viscose Rayon
When a new technology makes people ill, how high does the body count have to be before protectives steps are taken? This disturbing book tells a dark story of hazardous manufacturing, poisonous materials, environmental abuses, political machinations, and economics trumping safety concerns. It explores the century-long history of “fake silk,” or cellulose viscose, used to produce such products as rayon textiles and tires, cellophane, and everyday kitchen sponges. Paul Blanc uncovers the grim history of a product that crippled and even served a death sentence to many industry workers while also releasing toxic carbon disulfide into the environment. Viscose, an innovative and lucrative product first introduced in the early twentieth century, quickly became a multinational corporate enterprise. Blanc investigates industry practices from the beginning through two highly profitable world wars, the midcentury export of hazardous manufacturing to developing countries, and the current “greenwashing” of viscose as an eco-friendly product. Deeply researched and boldly presented, this book brings to light an industrial hazard whose egregious history ranks with those of asbestos, lead, and mercury.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Corporate Governance in the Knowledge Economy: Lessons from Case Studies in the Finance Sector
With the transition into the Knowledge Economy, a formidable series of new challenges arise within the corporate governance space. This book tackles the issue of corporate governance along two axes. Firstly, it confronts the developments in corporate governance within the context of the Knowledge Economy and all its implications in relation to the pre-eminence of intangible assets, the advent of technologies such as smartphones and advanced forms of artificial intelligence, and cultural changes associated with the incorporation of Gen Y into the workforce and the proliferation of social networks and effects such as Big Data and cyber-threats. Secondly, it highlights the challenges for multinational organizations and the tension that exists between headquarters and subsidiary offices due to the need to combine the corporation’s ethical culture and corporate governance values with the institutional forces of the subsidiaries’ context. The combination of these two axes addressed viz a viz the relationship between senior management and the rank and file of the organization to create an ethical corporate culture leads to a completely different positioning of corporate governance and make the book truly unique and of interest to researchers, students of corporate finance and corporate governance alongside practitioners within financial organizations and more broadly.

PAJ Publications,U.S. newARTtheatre: Evolutions of the Performance Aesthetic
"newARTtheatre's greatest value may be that of a historical document of the understanding of a specific set of performance practices in its own time of making. The fresh and speculative perspective of these artists grappling with the evolving paradigm of the tightening entanglement between performance and visual artist is worth a read now and may be rich material for historians to come." —Jess Wilcox, The Brooklyn Rail One of the hotly debated current issues is the turn by visual artists towards theatre as a way of working, by using plays, acting and rehearsal techniques for their art. The first of the new "Performance Ideas" books by PAJ, this volume includes playwright and curator Paul David Young in dialogue with many crossover artists, including Pablo Helguera, Liz Magic Laser, David Levine, Janet Cardiff, Alix Pearlstein, and Michael Smith, who offer wide-ranging views on performance, video, photography, and sound.
