Description

The communities of Padfield and Hadfield lie in that windswept corner of north Derbyshire close to Glossop and, like their larger sister town, they grew in the nineteenth century as the textile industry brought mills and employment to the area.

The majority of over 200 photographs in this collection are the work of Harry Buxton, a freelance news photographer from Hadfield, who took them between the late 1930s and the 1960s. Because he was often photographing newsworthy subjects, the collection contains an unusual wealth of interesting local events and people: from road accidents to heavy snowfalls and from wartime activities to carnivals. His daughter Margaret has selected the images and written the accompanying text to go with them.

This book will be a fascinating journey into the recent past for all who have lived and worked in the area of Hadfield and Padfield.
