SAGE Publications, Inc Theories in Intercultural Communication

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPublished in cooperation with the Speech Communication Association Division on International and Intercultural Communication Just as the earlier version of this work (Intercultural Communication Theory) helped to define the field, Theories In Intercultural Communication also makes an important contribution. This collection represents the major current approaches to the study of intercultural communication, as well as of communication in general. The contributors cover constructivist theory, coordinated management theory, convergence theory, adaptation in intercultural relationships, intercultural transformation, and network theory. The volume offers an analysis of the most current theories in intercultural communication. It also points to areas of further research and the need for continued refinements of existing approaches. This volume is valuable for graduate students and professionals in the areas of communication (especially intercultural and interpersonal), ethnic studies, cross-cultural studies, comparative studies, and education. The book is well conceived in its purpose, scope, and organization. It is also well executed with an even quality throughout. Each chapter author clearly presents the theory and provides thorough documentation. . . . This volume . . . promises to become a central piece in both the definition and development of theory in intercultural communication. --Modern Language Journal This volume does represent a significant attempt to consolidate and crystallize the current intellectual core concepts of mainsteam intercultural communications theories and to push the field forward toward a more rigorous and coherent state. . . . As a collection, these essays cover a lot of the bumpy terrain that constitutes the field of intercultural communication from an interpersonal perspective. . . . Very useful in the context of a university course on intercultural communications. --Canadian Journal of CommunicationTable of ContentsPART ONE: OVERVIEW On Theorizing Intercultural Communication - Young Kun Kim A Taxonomic Approach to Intercultural Communication - Larry E Sarbaugh PART TWO: CULTURE AND MEANING A Constructivist Theory of Communication and Culture - James L Applegate and Howard E Sypher Coordinated Management of Meaning - Vernon E Cronen, Victoria Chen, and W Barnett Pearce A Critical Theory Cultural Identity - Mary Jane Collier and Milt Thomas An Interpretive Perspective PART THREE: INTERCULTURAL BEHAVIOR Uncertainty and Anxiety - William B Gudykunst Communication Accommodation in Intercultural Encounters - Cynthia Gallois, Arlene Franklyn-Stokes, Howard Giles, and Nikolas Coupland Episode Representations in Intercultural Communication - Joseph P Forgas Intercultural Conflict Styles - Stella Ting-Toomey A Face-Negotiation Theory PART FOUR: INTERCULTURAL ADAPTATION Network Theory in Intercultural Communication - June Ock Yum A Theory of Adaptation in Intercultural Dyads - Huber W Ellingsworth The Convergence Theory and Intercultural Communication - D Lawrence Kincaid Intercultural Transformation - Young Kun Kim and Brent D Ruben A Systems Theory

Book SynopsisWhile there are numerous studies of racism and racial inequality at the macro-level of analysis, there has been little work done on the experience of everyday racism for black people. Philomena Essed's brilliant work fills this gap. This landmark volume compares contemporary racism in the United States and the Netherlands through in-depth interview data from more than 2,000 experiences of black women. As an interdisciplinary analysis of gendered social constructions of racism, it breaks new ground. Essed problematizes and reinterprets many of the meanings and everyday practices that the majority of society has come to take for granted. She addresses crucial but largely neglected dimensions of racism: How is racism experienced in everyday situations? How do black women recognize covert expressions of racism? What knowledge of racism do black women have, and how is this knowledge acquired? How do they challenge racism in everyday life? To answer these questions, over two thousand experTable of ContentsPART ONE: TOWARDS AN INTEGRATION OF MACRO AND MICRO DIMENSIONS OF RACISM Racism Today The Social-political Context The Netherlands Some Notes on Contemporary Racism in the US Women and Racism Black Women with Higher Education Conceptualizing Racism as a Process Racism A Working Definition The Notion of Everyday Racism PART TWO: METHODOLOGICAL QUESTIONS Introduction Methodology within Methodology Accounts The Interviewees Interviewing Method of Analysis PART THREE: KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION OF EVERYDAY RACISM Introduction General Knowledge and Scenarios of Racism Comprehending Racism Subjective and Objective Assessments of the Comprehension of Racist Events A Procedure for the Assessment of Racist Events Assessing Real-life Explanations of `Unfair Treatment′ Relating Cognitive to Social Processes of Understanding The Acquisition of Knowledge of Racism Reconstructing Black Women′s General Knowledge of Racism PART FOUR: ANALYZING ACCOUNTS OF RACISM Introduction Analyzing Accounts of Racism Knowledge About Racism as an Evaluative Category in Verbal Accounts Heuristics, Interpretations and Evaluations in Reconstructions of Racist Events Racist Complications in Job Applications What happened? This invaluable guide answers the essential questions that students ask about research methods in a concise and accessible way. Trade Review"This is a concise text that has good coverage of the basic concepts and elementary principles of research methods. It picks up where many traditional research methods texts stop and provides additional discussion on some of the hardest to understand concepts." -- University of Central Florida"I think it’s a great idea for a text (or series), and I have no doubt that the majority of students would find it helpful. The material is presented clearly, and it is easy to read and understand. My favorite example from those provided is on p. 7 where the author provides an actual checklist for evaluating the merit of a study. This is a great tool for students and would provide an excellent “practice” approach to learning this skill. Over time students wouldn’t need a checklist, but I think it would be invaluable for those students with little to no research experience." -- University of DenverTable of ContentsPart 1. • Discovering Statistics Using R

Sage Publications Ltd Discovering Statistics Using R

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisKeeping the uniquely humorous and self-deprecating style that has made students across the world fall in love with Andy Field's books, Discovering Statistics Using R takes students on a journey of statistical discovery using R, a free, flexible and dynamically changing software tool for data analysis that is becoming increasingly popular across the social and behavioural sciences throughout the world. The journey begins by explaining basic statistical and research concepts before a guided tour of the R software environment. Next you discover the importance of exploring and graphing data, before moving onto statistical tests that are the foundations of the rest of the book (for example correlation and regression). You will then stride confidently into intermediate level analyses such as ANOVA, before ending your journey with advanced techniques such as MANOVA and multilevel models. Although there is enough theory to help you gain the necessary conceptual undeTrade ReviewIn statistics, R is the way of the future. The big boys and girls have known this for some time: There are now millions of R users in academia and industry. R is free (as in no cost) and free (as in speech). Andy, Jeremy, and Zoe′s book now makes R accessible to the little boys and girls like me and my students. Soon all classes in statistics will be taught in R. I have been teaching R to psychologists for several years and so I have been waiting for this book for some time. The book is excellent, and it is now the course text for all my statistics classes. I′m pretty sure the book provides all you need to go from statistical novice to working researcher. Take, for example, the chapter on t-tests. The chapter explains how to compare the means of two groups from scratch. It explains the logic behind the tests, it explains how to do the tests in R with a complete worked example, which papers to read in the unlikely event you do need to go further, and it explains what you need to write in your practical report or paper. But it also goes further, and explains how t-tests and regression are related---and are really the same thing---as part of the general linear model. So this book offers not just the step-by-step guidance needed to complete a particular test, but it also offers the chance to reach the zen state of total statistical understanding. Prof. Neil StewartWarwick University Field′s Discovering Statistics is popular with students for making a sometimes deemed inaccessible topic accessible, in a fun way. In Discovering Statistics Using R, the authors have managed to do this using a statistics package that is known to be powerful, but sometimes deemed just as inaccessible to the uninitiated, all the while staying true to Field′s off-kilter approach. Dr Marcel van Egmond University of Amsterdam Probably the wittiest and most amusing of the lot (no, really), this book takes yet another approach: it is 958 pages of R-based stats wisdom (plus online accoutrements)... A thoroughly engaging, expansive, thoughtful and complete guide to modern statistics. Self-deprecating stories lighten the tone, and the undergrad-orientated ′stupid faces′ (Brian Haemorrhage, Jane Superbrain, Oliver Twisted, etc.) soon stop feeling like a gimmick, and help to break up the text with useful snippets of stats wisdom. It is very mch a student textbook but it is brilliant... Field et al. is the complete package.David M. Shuker AnimJournal of Animal Behaviour "This work should be in the library of every institution where statistics is taught. It contains much more content than what is required for a beginning or advanced undergraduate course, but instructors for such courses would do well to consider this book; it is priced comparably to books which contain only basic material, and students who are fascinated by the subject may find the additional material a real bonus. The book would also be very good for self-study. Overall, an excellent resource." -- R. Bharath * Choice *The main strength of this book is that it presents a lot of information in an accessible, engaging and irreverent way. The style is informal with interesting excursions into the history of statistics and psychology. There is reference to research papers which illustrate the methods explained, and are also very entertaining. The authors manage to pull off the Herculean task of teaching statistics through the medium of R... All in all, an invaluable resource. -- Paul WebbTable of ContentsWhy Is My Evil Lecturer Forcing Me to Learn Statistics? What will this chapter tell me? What the hell am I doing here? Book SynopsisOne of the most globally recognised sub-disciplines of social psychology is the field of intergroup relations, which has a strong relationship with both sociology and political science given its preponderance with themes such as prejudice, discrimination, multiculturalism and the relationship between social groups. This new four-volume major work presents a comprehensive and authoritative collection of both classic and contemporary readings in intergroup relations. Each volume is opened by an introductory chapter which provides the reader with an overview of the primary topics covered therein, and the rationale behind the editor's selection. Whilst the volumes are organized around the broad research themes of intergroup relations, the papers are carefully structured so that together they tell the story of how intergroup relations research has evolved within social psychology.
