In the last 40 years or so, we have seen an astounding rise in the prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2) in most western and 'developing' countries. National data suggests a six-fold increase from around 1% of the population in 1980 to over 6% in 2020. There are thought to be nearly 4 million people with the disease in the UK, and close on half a billion affected worldwide. In parts of the USA and China over 10% of the population have DM2.
