    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWhen first published in 1983, Biblical Words and Their Meaning broke new ground by introducing to students of the Bible the principles of linguistics, in particular, on lexical semantics -- that branch that focuses on the meaning of individual words. Silva''s structural approach provides the interpreter with an important lexical tool for more responsible understanding of the biblical text and more effective use of standard exegetical resources. This revised edition includes a bibliographical essay by Silva, Recent Developments in Semantics, and an appendix by Karen H. Jobes, Distinguishing the Meaning of Greek Verbs in the Semantic Domain for Worship, that provides the reader with a substantive example of lexical study.

These intentional changes will attract the world and empower your church members to be salt and light in their communities.Over the last thirty years, many influential church leaders and church planters in America have adopted various models for reaching unchurched people. While many of these approaches have merit, something is still missing, something even more fundamental to the mission of the church: discipleship.Making disciples—helping people to trust and follow Jesus—is the church''s God-given mandate. Devoted disciples attract people outside the church because of the change others see in their Christ-like lives. And discipleship empowers Christians to

It gives preachers and teachers the tools, ideas, and insights they need to communicate God’s Word with the same powerful impact it had when it was first written.Trade Review“At a time when many pastors are deeply in need of inspiration and encouragement, these volumes… would be a good investment for congregations, even if it means adding a line to the annual budget.” * Christianity Today *“Here at last is a commentary which is not only academically well informed but which helps that commentary reader hear God’s Word and consider its implications; scholarship in service of the Church.” * Arthur Rowe, Spurgeon’s College *“If you want to avoid hanging applicational elephants from interpretational threads, then the NIV Application Commentary is for you! This series excels at both original meaning and contemporary significance. I support it one hundred percent.” * Howard G. Hendricks, Dallas Theological Seminary *“It is encouraging to find a commentary that is not only biblically trustworthy but also contemporary in its application. The NIV Application Commentary series will prove to be a helpful tool in the pastor’s sermon preparation. I use it and recommend it.” * Charles F. Stanley, Pastor, First Baptist Church of Atlanta *“It takes more than interpretation of God's Word to change lives, it takes application. Application is the bottom line in preaching and teaching. Without it, we’ve missed the point of the Bible. The NIV Application Commentary is an outstanding resource for pastors and anyone else who is serious about developing ‘doers of the Word.’” * Rick Warren, Pastor, Saddleback Valley Community Church *“The NIV Application Commentary builds bridges that make the Bible come alive with meaning for contemporary life--and the series do so concisely, clearly, and accurately. No wasted words or academic detours--just solid help and practical truth.” * Warren W. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisAs communicators in a culture saturated with storylines, we have the profound opportunity to invite our students into the masterful Story of God. There are a variety of ways to invite our students into this Story, but this book discusses and explores how to teach through one of Jesus'' most powerful modes of communication--fictional storytelling. Rabbinical storytelling (otherwise known as Jewish Agada) embraces the narrative of Scripture and invites its listeners into understanding and participation. Our Rabbi, Jesus, employed this mode of communication through his parables. Approaching the topic as a theologian, philosopher and artist, Jon invites and teaches how to create modern-day parables that illuminate the message of Jesus. These stories do not simply illustrate the message; they are, in fact, the message. Whether hoping to articulate deep theological concepts or relevant topics, teaching through the art of fictional storytelling has the potential to engage and invite our st

As you learn how to savor the presTable of ContentsBeginnings I tell the story of my conversion to Christ as an adolescent and subsequent transition from a shop-lifting, drug-using juvenile delinquent to a young adult struggling to follow Christ, but lacking any knowledge of spiritual practices and tools. I set the stage for the reader by discussing the events that led to my taking a pilgrimage to Ireland, which introduced me to the concept of a rule or rhythm of life. Part One: Invitation to a Pilgrimage Chapter 1 Discovering the Treasure of an Ancient Path This chapter explains how, as an urban pastor spiritually treading water in my early thirties, I trav-eled to Ireland and visited many of the important sites of Celtic Christianity and at the same time discovered the work and spiritual disciplines of Saint Benedict. Connecting this experience with the practices of my Samurai-scholar ancestors in Japan, I describe how my pilgrimage to Ireland prompted me to explore the idea of a rule of life, its importance, and its application in my own life and the lives of others. Chapter 2 Creating a Spiritual Ecosystem This chapter uses the image of a trellis to show how a rule or rhythm provides a framework for our becoming more like Jesus. Drawing on my experiences as a sailing enthusiast, I illustrate how a rhythm of life enables us to grow: raising and trimming sails, an image for our participation in God’s work of purification, works in tandem with the wind, a symbol for God’s grace. Using the careers of Michael Jordan and Yo-Yo Ma as illustrations, I show how deliberate practice, rather than sheer talent or giftedness alone, fosters a person’s spiritual development. In order to guide this deliberate practice, I explain the importance of finding a coach, a spiritual friend, and a supportive community to help us build our spiritual ecosystem. Chapter 3 A Rule that Bends but Doesn’t Break This chapter opens by flashing back to a time in my twenties in Tokyo, Japan, when, at the very time others considered me to be a rising star in the Sony Corporation, I felt like I was losing my soul. I describe how, as a result, I unconsciously began to engage in practices that restored spiritual health to my life---I began living by a rule of life. Then, in order to provide a biblical foundation for living by a rule, I explore the life of Daniel as a model in Scripture of someone who lived by a rhythm. Finally, I move to the practical. I outline the different potential categories of a rule: Sab-bath, prayer, lectio, spiritual friendship, sexuality, family, care for the body, recreation, play, mon-ey, work, and mission. I close by giving a series of practical suggestions on how to craft the rhythm: start simply, build slowly, and prune. Part Two: The Core Practices Chapter 4 Oasis for Body and Soul This chapter explores how setting aside one day of Sabbath rest in seven creates a sanctuary for us in time. I show how this day of rest not only gifts our bodies with rest but also offers peace for our soul as we are freed from our compulsive need to define ourselves by what we achieve. Citing examples from traditional monastics and illustrating this theme with the experiences of a student, an engineer, and a parent, I demonstrate how pilgrims of Christ can establish periods of rest in their lives. This chapter connects these ideas about Sabbath with creative ways readers can keep Sabbath, namely by worshiping in community, enjoying loved ones, and recreating in creation. Chapter 5 Deepening Our Friendship with God This chapter describes prayer as a way of growing a friendship with God. I show how the analogy of prayer as a friendship with God helps us form realistic expectations for the difficult seasons of our spiritual life, whether that season is parenting young children or a long season of drought. Drawing on the example of Benedictine monks, I offer ways of creating a rhythm for spending time with God in our lives---even for those unable to s

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisRadical. Crazy. Transformative and restless. Every word we read these days seems to suggest there’s a “next-best-thing,” if only we would change our comfortable, compromising lives. In fact, the greatest fear most Christians have is boredom—the sense that they are missing out on the radical life Jesus promised. One thing is certain. No one wants to be “ordinary.”Yet pastor and author Michael Horton believes that our attempts to measure our spiritual growth by our experiences, constantly seeking after the next big breakthrough, have left many Christians disillusioned and disappointed. There’s nothing wrong with an energetic faith; the danger is that we can burn ourselves out on restless anxieties and unrealistic expectations. What’s needed is not another program or a fresh approach to spiritual growth; it’s a renewed appreciation for the commonplace.Far from a call to low expectations and passivity, Horton invites reTable of ContentsChapter 1: Ordinary: The New Radical? We're so wrapped up in the excitement of the extraordinary---the radical---that we miss opportunities both to receive and to give what's really important. After the initial burst based on big promises and expectations, the result is often burn-out and disillusionment. Chapter 2: Ordinary Isn't Mediocre The focus here is on what isn't meant by "ordinary." Too often, it's seen as synonymous with "nominal," "mediocre," "passive," and "disengaged." My goal in this chapter is to challenge these assumptions. Chapter 3: The God of the Ordinary One of the areas where we see so little appreciation for the ordinary is in the marginalization of the doctrine of providence. In the face of secular naturalism, many Christians adopt a hyper-supernaturalism. Either everything is a miracle, or nothing is. But that renders miracles ordinary and the ordinary empty of God's activity. Everything goes down a notch. To appreciate the ordinary, we have to begin with God as the original worker. Here I try to distinguish God's miraculous and providential ways of working while giving both their due. Chapter 4: We Don't Need Another Hero We start early, in Sunday school, with the Bible as a collection of "Bible heroes." Then we look for celebrity athletes and entertainers, founding fathers and Mother Theresas, to boost are confidence in being on the winning team. But does the Bible itself encourage us to read it this way? This chapter draws attention to God as the real hero of the Bible, along with a supporting cast of characters who---like us---are often unfaithful. Only when we understand that Christ is first of all the Savior of people who don't follow his example can we accept ourselves as ordinary sinners with an extraordinary Redeemer. Chapter 5: Extraordinary Grace through Ordinary Means We associate the Holy Spirit with direct and immediate experiences inside of us. That makes sense, given the emphases in Scripture on the Spirit's indwelling work. Nevertheless, it also misses a lot. The Holy Spirit has always done extraordinary things through his ordinary creatures. This chapter traces the ways in which the Spirit is typically identified with visible and external matter: water, a cloud and pillar of fire, circumcision, a temple, and an otherwise ordinary bath and an ordinary meal with bread wine, in a fellowship of embodied saints who long for the resurrection to come. Chapter 6: Spontaneous Isn't All It's Cracked Up to Be From a fountain of individualism---even narcissism, our culture prizes that which is spontaneous, personally chosen, with results that are immediately visible. Sometimes this impulse affects our view of discipleship. Why do the apostles talk so much about character traits like humility, patience, gentleness, self-control, and submission to each other? And are we prone to adopt, even in the name of being counter-cultural, the contrary characteristics that our successful neighbors value? Chapter 7: "The Kingdom of God Is Like..." Jesus compared the kingdom to a mustard seed. In fact, a lot of the analogies for the growth of the kingdom---and of individual believers---are organic. Planting strawberries with their mom, children often expect immediate fruit and lose interest when it doesn't appear. You can't really watch a tree grow, but it does. We know because Christ is raised and has ascended and has sent his Spirit to graft us onto him as our Living Vine. Once we stop looking for immediate results and evidence of our own growth and the visible triumph of Christ's kingdom, we can begin to care for things again. Chapter 8: Ordinary People The church in the abstract may be fine---the invisible company of God's elect. As the saying goes, "To dwell above with the saints in love---Oh, that will be glory! But to dwell below with the saints I know, well, that's a different story." Especially those of us who have been shaped by the amb

Book SynopsisReaders of Paul today are more than ever aware of the importance of interpreting Paul’s letters in their Jewish context. In Reading Romans in Context a team of Pauline scholars go beyond a general introduction that surveys historical events and theological themes and explore Paul’s letter to the Romans in light of Second Temple Jewish literature. In this non-technical collection of short essays, beginning and intermediate students are given a chance to see firsthand what makes Paul a distinctive thinker in relation to his Jewish contemporaries. Following the narrative progression of Romans, each chapter pairs a major unit of the letter with one or more thematically related Jewish text, introduces and explores the theological nuances of the comparative text, and shows how these ideas illuminate our understanding of the book of Romans.Table of ContentsForeword Simon Gathercole Introduction; History of the Second Temple Period Editors 1 Messianism in Romans 1:1-17 Wesley Hill 2 Anthropology in Romans 1:18-2:5 Jonathan Linebaugh 3 Ethnicity in Romans 2:6-29 Love Sechrest 4 Works of the Law in Romans 3:1-20 Aaron Sherwood 5 God's Righteousness in Romans 3:21-31 Jonathan Linebaugh 6 Abraham's Faith in Romans 4:1-25 Mariam Kamell 7 Justification in Romans 5:1-11 Mark Mathews 8 Adam and/or Temporal Dualism in Romans 5:12-21 Jonathan Worthington 9 Personification in Romans 6:1-23 Joseph Dodson 10 Sin and Human Agency in Romans 7:1-25 Jason Maston 11 Spirit and Human Agency in Romans 8:1-13 Kyle Wells 12 Cosmology in Romans 8:14-39 Ben Blackwell 13 Election in Romans 9:1-29 Orrey McFarland 14 Righteousness and Law in Romans 9:30-10:21 David Lincicum or Sarah Whittle (?) 15 Israel's Salvation in Romans 11:1-36 John Goodrich 16 Community and Ethics in Romans 12:1-21 Ben Dunson 17 Politics in Romans 13:1-14 Dean Pinter 18 Anti-Semitism in Romans 14:1-15:13 Nijay Gupta 19 Almsgiving in Romans 15:14-33 David Briones 20 Women in Ministry in Romans 16:1-27 Susan Mathew Epilogue: Reading Romans in Light of Second Temple Judaism; Glossary; Appendix: Basic Research Tools Editors

But inconsistencies in practice and careful biblical study convinced him to rethink his position.Originally published as a short ebook, Bourgeois Babes, Bossy Wives, and Bobby Haircuts offers an engaging, incisive perspective on biblical gender equality and the egalitarian viewa preference for allowing women to hold teaching and leadership positions in ministry. While Bird is now egalitarian, he nevertheless strikes a respectful tone toward those in his previous camp, seeking to craft a perspective that both values women and upholds biblical differences between the sexes. Focused and purposefully limited in its conclusions, Dickson's case has the potential to change minds and merits careful consideration by complementarians and egalitarians alike. This book will be useful for pastors, Bible teachers, college and seminary students, professors, and lay leaders who wrestle with the topic of women's roles in ministry, and it will appeal to many with its fresh approach to this hot-button topic.

  • Zondervan Conversion and Discipleship

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisDiscipleship occurs when someone answers the call to learn from Jesus how to live his or her life—as though Jesus were living it. The end result is that the disciple becomes the kind of person who naturally does what Jesus did.How the church understands salvation and the gospel is the key to recovering a biblical theology of discipleship. Our doctrines of grace and salvation, in some cases, actually prevent us from creating an expectation that we are to be disciples of Jesus. A person can profess to be a Christian and yet still live under the impression that they don’t need to actually follow Jesus. Being a follower is seen as an optional add-on, not a requirement. It is a choice, not a demand. Being a Christian today has no connection with the biblical idea that we are formed into the image of Christ. In this ground-breaking new book, pastor and author Bill Hull shows why our existing models of evangelism and discipleship fail to actually produce followers Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1 - The Gospel The definition of the gospel is the source for discipleship. It defines the life of a disciple, the disciple's purpose, calling, and message. This chapter looks at several of the most common gospels preached, including: the gospel of forgiveness only, the gospel of the left, the gospel of the right, the gospel of prosperity, the gospel for consumers, the radical gospel for activists, the good for nothing gospel, and the gospel of the kingdom. Chapter 2 - The Call My life is an answer to the call of Jesus. We answer with our lives. This chapter will discuss the impotence of systems and why Jesus called us to be and make disciples rather than start churches or governments. Discipleship is the only hope for the world. Only when a person submits to a community of serious Christ-followers can they learn to do all that Christ commanded. This chapter will exegete relevant passages, define terms, and look at various definitions of discipleship from the Reformation, Wesley, Post WWII evangelicalism, the para church, etc. Chapter 3 - Salvation Saved means the possession and the experience of new life, eternal life right now. It also assumes significant and ongoing change into the image of Christ. Additionally, the grand goals of a life in Christ are attainable and are expected as one lives an obedient life. This quality of life does matter regarding the level of success and amount of time it takes the church to accomplish its mission. It also sorts out the reasons that a substandard understanding of Salvation creates a passive worldwide congregation with low expectations and "Christians" who contradict their own testimony. Chapter 4 - Ways and Means The problem in the world is not just bad people doing bad things. It is good people doing good things badly. Modifications of time hardened practices is required if what has been advertized as a new person in Christ and in the case of the church, as a new humanity is going to realized. As it always does, it comes down to the ways and means of getting there. This section will talk about spiritual exercise, spiritual disciplines, and if there are "must haves?" meaning, if you don't do them, you cannot grow because God set it up that way. Chapter 5 - The Church The New Testament shows us the church we never see. The church is as grand as one could imagine and as low and gross as the depravity of man can take it. The reality of the church is that we are people of dust daring to shoot for the stars. The majestic beauty of theological grandeur inspires our hearts and the mundane, the boring, and the vast wasteland the church can become disillusion us. The balance that calls us is to never let the vision of the church we want to have become the enemy of the church we do have. If disappointment in the church could cause Christ to quit running it, he would of left us long ago. Chapter 6 - The Pastor What is the role of the pastor in calling people to discipleship? This chapter begins with several common pastoral mistakes. It draws on some of the background from The Disciple Making Pastor and the Complete Book of Discipleship. Chapter 7 - The End "And the good news about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then the end will come." Mt. 24:14 NLT. This not about how the story ends but about the fact that it does, indeed, end. We will also deal with where we end up and why it matters. I want to show that this is all connected to our understanding and practice of discipleship. The end compels us to define what is driving our discipleship. Conclusion

Book SynopsisOur goal as Christians is never simply to build our own tribe. Instead, we seek the peace and prosperity of the city or community in which we live through a gospel movement led by the Holy Spirit, a movement united by the gospel of Jesus Christ, a common mission to reach and serve others, and a commitment to be gracious and generous to those who disagree with you.In Serving a Movement, best-selling author and pastor Timothy Keller looks at the nature of the church’s mission and its relationship to the work of individual Christians in the world. He examines what it means to be a “missional” church today and how churches can practically equip people for missional living. Churches need to intentionally cultivate an integrative ministry that connects people to God, to one another, to the needs of the city, and to the culture around us.
