Penguin Books Ltd Cheating at Canasta
Book SynopsisCheating at Canasta - an outstanding collection of stories by the master storyteller William Trevor''There is no better short story writer in the English-speaking world'' Wall Street Journal''''No matter what,'' Julia had said, aware then of what was coming, ''let''s always play cards.'' And they did; for even with her memory gone, a little more of it each day - her children taken, her house, her flowerbeds, belongings, clothes - their games in the communal drawing room were a reality her affliction allowed.''A husband sits in Harry''s Bar in Venice, thinking of his wife - lost to him now - whose plea has brought him back to one of their favourite haunts. On another table, a young couple quarrel. ''Cheating at Canasta'' is the title story of William Trevor''s collection, his first since the highly acclaimed A Bit on the Side, and its themes of missed opportunities, the inevitability of change and the powerful but fragmentary quality of oTrade ReviewWhat remains to be said about William Trevor - except the oft-repeated truth that he is not just a master but the master of the narrative form ... True to such maturity and control, the stories are suffused with radiant and effortless majesty; a comprehensive ease of speaking about spaces in the human heart and mind that remains out of reach for most writers.' The Times 7 July 2007 All the stories in this book are good, but two of them are outstanding ... The final tale, in particular, is a work of perfect control and balance ... This is the twelfth story in Trevor's twelfth collection: an almost magical number for what could be his most mesmerising and haunting story. William Trevor is the greatest living exponent of the form. Cressida Connolly, The Literary Review July 2007 These stories are formally perfect ... As with Chekov - and the comparison is almost inevitable - they leave space for the reader to ruminate and in that way achieve their aim, which is to underline the solitary nature, almost the impermeability, of individual experience. Anita Brookner, the Spectator 21 July 2007 Some of the stories here can stand with his best... even more than most collections it should be taken slowly, measured out at a story or two at a day. Read in that way, some of these little epiphanies can still slice off the top of your head. TLS 20 July 2007 Slyly humorous, thoughtful, rich in pathos, wonderfully harmonic in spirit and mood, and above all, hugely enjoyable, these tales confirm what we already knew: that Trevor is an absolute master of the genre. Daily Mail 13 July 2007 The short story as Trevor writes it, as Chekhov and Hemingway wrote it, is a novel in miniature, with everything omitted except the significant moment. Trevor is a writer who finds words for the silences between people. Allan Massie, Scotsman 14 July 2007 Like Rembrandt, Trevor looks long but charitably upon his creations ... [his] understanding of human nature is acute ... wise, calmly written stories. The Sunday Times 22 July 2007

Cambridge University Press The Poetics of Melancholy in Early Modern England
Book SynopsisThe Poetics of Melancholy in Early Modern England explores how attitudes toward, and explanations of, human emotions change in England during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century. Typically categorized as 'literary' writers Edmund Spenser, John Donne, Robert Burton and John Milton were all active in the period's reappraisal of the single emotion that, due to their efforts, would become the passion most associated with the writing life: melancholy. By emphasising the shared concerns of the 'non-literary' and 'literary' texts produced by these figures, Douglas Trevor asserts that quintessentially 'scholarly' practices such as glossing texts and appending sidenotes shape the methods by which these same writers come to analyse their own moods. He also examines early modern medical texts, dramaturgical representations of learned depressives such as Shakespeare's Hamlet, and the opposition to materialistic accounts of the passions voiced by Neoplatonists such as Edmund Spenser.Trade Review"A highly significant history of the passions...." -SEL: Studies in English Literature, 1500-1900"...the visual parameters are set forth with laudable clarity and comprehensiveness. Kiefer's work, which concludes with an exemplary thirty-five page select bibliography, is a welcome addition to Shakespeare studies." -Clifford Davidson, Modern Philology"Douglas Trevor's Poetics of Melancholy is an illuminating and thought-provoking analysis of the representation of sadness in early modern English writing." -Ian Frederick Moultan, Arizona State University Polytechnic"[T]his is a fascinating, probing book." -David W. Swain, Southern New Hampshire University, American and English Studies"This book constitutes a major contribution to Renaissance studies: lucidly written, ambitious in its choice of topic and of texts, and opulently intelligent in the details of its literary analysis." --Katherine Elsaman Maus, University of Virginia.Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisSmuggling was rife in Britain between the seventeenth and mid-nineteenth centuries, and since then smugglers have come often to be romanticised as cheeky rogues as highwaymen of the coasts and Robin Hood figures. The reality could be very different. Cut-throat businessmen determined to make a profit, many smugglers were prepared to use excessive force as often as they used cunning, and the officers whose job it was to apprehend them were regularly brutally intimidated into inaction. Trevor May explains who the smugglers were, what motivated them, where they operated, and how items ranging from barrels of brandy to boxes of tea would surreptitiously be moved inland under the noses of, and sometimes even in collusion with, the authorities.Table of ContentsHeroes and Villains / The Nature of Smuggling / Enforcing the Law / A Practical Guide to Smuggling / The Smuggler at Sea / Smugglers of Note and Notoriety / From the Old Smuggler to the New / Further Reading / Places to Visit / Index

Michigan State University Press Psychopolitics: Conversations with Trevor Cribben
Book SynopsisFor thousands of years, political leaders have unified communities by aligning them against common enemies. However, today more than ever, the search for "common" enemies results in anything but unanimity. Scapegoats like Saddam Hussein, for example, led to a stark polarisation in the United States. Renowned neuropsychiatrist and psychologist Jean-Michel Oughourlian proposes that the only authentic enemy is the one responsible for both everyday frustrations and global dangers, such as climate change - ourselves. Oughourlian, who pioneered an "interdividual" psychology with Rene Girard, reveals how all people are bound together in a dynamic, contingent process of imitation, and shows that the same patterns of irrational mimetic desire that bring individuals together and push them apart also explain the behaviour of nations.

Michigan State University Press The Mimetic Brain
Book SynopsisThe discovery of mirror neurons in the 1990s led to an explosion of research and debate about the imitative capacities of the human brain. Some herald a paradigm shift on the order of DNA in biology, while others remain skeptical. In this revolutionary volume, Jean- Michel Oughourlian shows how the hypotheses of René Girard can be combined with the insights of neuroscientists to shed new light on the “mimetic brain”.Offering up clinical studies and a complete reevaluation of classical psychiatry, Oughourlian explores the interaction among reason, emotions, and imitation and reveals that rivalry - the blind spot in contemporary neuroscientific understandings of imitation - is a misunderstood driving force behind mental illness. Oughourlian’s analyses shake the very foundations of psychiatry as we know it and open up new avenues for both theoretical research and clinical practice.
