Book SynopsisToday, we live in changing times and how we respond to these changes creates some uneasiness in our daily lives. Some of these changes reflect demographic shifts in power and paradigm in the United States, while others reflect the reckless assumption that our problems are insurmountable. Multiculturalism Still Matters in Education and Society: Responding to Changing Times urges us to collaborate, consult, and cooperate for our common good. It rightly emphasizes that multiculturalism will always matter in whatever we do in our complex world. In addition, it challenges us to continue to see differences as strengths that must be valued in dealing with our students, educational professionals, leaders, and communities. Finally, this book inspires us to expand our discourses, create avenues for "hearty" conversations, look for ways to make invisible voices visible, and help culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) and vulnerable populations to maximize their fullest potential.

Book SynopsisReducing Hate through Multicultural Education and Transformation is a book that reminds us that we live in a complex world; and at micro and macro levels, the demography is changing and people are worried about the current state of affairs, their future, and the future of their children. At local, national, and global levels, there appears to be unsteadiness, crises, and struggles in our economies, politics, and societies. Disruptions, disasters, and deaths are visible at all spectra of our lives; and our leaders seem unready, unwilling, underprepared, and unprepared to bring us together to solve our problems for the common good. Even when we make efforts to respond to human differences and multicultural valuing, they seem to be half-baked cakes that are unready for consumption; and there continues to be visible hateful actions that devastate our sacred existence. While these hateful actions have filtered into our families, schools, communities, nation, and world, we pretend to solve them by engaging in phony community relations, fraudulent multiculturalism, and unreasonable "wokeness" to masquerade our inefficiency, inflexibility, prejudice, and jaundiced views.Reducing Hate through Multicultural Education and Transformation provides cutting edge solutions for innovative educators and leaders. Yes, hate is a controversial construct that is rarely researched, studied, and discussed in education. The reason is that teachers and related professionals are supposedly very liberal people who cannot hate their culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students, parents, and colleagues. And, the lingering question is, can a teacher who is always liberal be also hateful? This question seems legitimate; and, to answer it, we must look deeper into traditional presumptions. The reality is that White educators and professionals who dominate the educational profession are human-beings who live in their respective White dominated communities. As a result, they teach or lead people who they do not know very well. If not, why should CLD individuals continue to experience hateful misidentifications, misassessments, miscategorizations, misplacements, and misinstructions in school programs? And, why should disproportionate placements of CLD learners with special education needs, gifts and talents, and emotional/behavioral problems continue to be burning issues in education? This book provides outside-the-box solutions!

Information Age Publishing Voices of Asian Americans in Higher Education:
Book SynopsisVoices of Asian Americans in Higher Education: Unheard Voices is a unique and historical book. Asian Americans are often portrayed as “model minority”, yet their personal and educational experiences are often unheard. In this book, 10 Asian American educators and scholars present realistic pictures of America’s higher education using personal narratives. The contributors in this book come from different regions and teach in different colleges and universities; and coincidentally, they all endure the “outsider” category formerly as students and now as professors and leaders. This “outsider” status can be emotionally overwhelming and psychologically unnerving. This status hampers opportunities for Asian Americans to grow and maximize their fullest potential. Though they develop different strategies to address their “outsider” label, it does not make it comfortable. But, time and time again, they have proven that they can succeed! In this technological age, we must value unending truths as we educate ourselves and others. We hope that this book will be an educational and informational resource for students, administrators, and faculty in higher education and also educational policy makers and stakeholders.Table of Contents Preface. Information Age Publishing Educating Young Children With and Without
Book SynopsisEarly childhood education (ECE) has always been intertwined with the use of developmentally appropriate practice (DAP). To support excellence in ECE, it is critical how the knowledge about individual children and child development principles combined with the knowledge of effective early learning practices. Effective early childhood education involves an interdisciplinary collaborative process that is influenced by many factors. We present these aforementioned realities in Educating Young Children With and Without Exceptionalities: New Perspectives. In addition, we argue that general and special educators need to focus on applying new knowledge to better address critical issues that advance the field of educator preparation and improve educational outcomes for young children.Early childhood research confirms the need for intensive intervention and remedial education—we need to avoid approaches that are “too little” or “too late.” Also proven to yield positive results for children are practices familiar to early childhood educators. These practices include relationship-based teaching and learning; partnering with families; adapting teaching for children from different backgrounds and for individual children; active, meaningful, and connected learning; and smaller class sizes. Evidence of the benefits of these practices suggests that they should be extended more widely into the elementary grades.

Book SynopsisThis is the first of two themed volumes addressing the current issues and trends in Special Education. Volume 19 covers identification, assessment and instruction whilst volume 20 covers research, technology, and teacher preparation. The field of special education constantly changes as a result of legislation, new instructional formats and current research investigations. It can be difficult for general and special educators, school counselors and psychologists, administrators and practicing clinicians to keep up with these changes and be current in all areas relating to special education. The special education literature knowledge base should reflect these changes; however, there is no current resource that effectively and comprehensively does this. The purpose of "Current Issues and Trends in Special Education" is to fill this void, providing chapters written by active researchers and practitioners in their respective areas.Table of ContentsList of Contributors. Nova Science Publishers Inc Voices of Foreign-Born African American Teacher
Book SynopsisThis is a book that exposes silenced and invisible voices in Colleges/Schools of Education. These voices of African immigrants are seldom heard in serious educational quarters since most foreign-born teacher educators try their very best to play by the rules as immigrant minorities. However, they find themselves between cultural continuity and cultural discontinuity. They are pressured to do well by their families in their native countries; but these pressures force them to forget home and think about survival strategies in their new found home. Very often, they do well and at tremendous costs! Additionally, they are expected to be happy and endure all kinds of mistreatments with a smile because they seem to have fewer survival options. On the one hand, they are generally treated as Blacks; and as Blacks, they encounter racist behaviours. On the other hand, they are treated as invisible, primitive, and inferior Blacks who have nothing to share and who are supposed to be seen and not heard. As a consequence, they endure discrimination from both native born African Americans and Whites in America. Interestingly, when they are confident, they are labelled as arrogant, troublemaker, foreigner, chauvinistic, and so on. When they are quiet, they are labelled as incompetent, timid, naïve, unprepared, and so on. The tendency is to forget that they are human-beings with aspirations to do well and contribute to their "new" society, that is, America. The critical question then is, how can they do well or contribute to the advancement of their new society if they are not given opportunities to learn, teach, serve, or grow?

Nova Science Publishers Inc Special Education Practices: Personal Narratives
Book SynopsisSpecial education is a vibrant, complex, and controversial field that continues to garner widespread attention from policy makers, researchers, practitioners, and educators. It is a field whose primary goal is to provide an appropriate education for students with special needs, a disproportionate number of whom are from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds. In this book the authors bring together critical perspectives and historical viewpoints on special education by a group of distinguished and well-recognised African American scholars, educators, and related professionals. These authors raise important questions, challenge assumptions about traditions and conventions in special education, and provide insights into how to reach and teach under-served African American children and youth in special education.

Nova Science Publishers Inc White Voices in Multicultural Psychology,
Book SynopsisThis is a collection of personal narratives from scholars, educators, and leaders in higher education focusing on how they developed and used multicultural perspectives. Each story is unique and personal and the collection illustrates the many ways these individuals were influenced by and influenced broad and inclusive views of culture. People tend to make judgments based on their experiences in life. In the chapters, the authors discuss their experiences and how they developed a passion for multiculturalism. They discuss how they challenged themselves and traditional assumptions of our society to develop their own multicultural skill sets. It may have been one situation or a combination of situations; but for each author, there was a significant event that impacted him/her forever. In most cases, there were a number of factors and experiences that led the author down this very important path. White voices do matter and this book is a powerful collection of such voices in print. Individuals can be different and these chapters provide real stories and real situations where the authors made a conscious decision to not go with the "norm" and redirect their thoughts and actions to develop into proponents of multiculturalism. Through their actions, they have shown others that this behavior is acceptable, and in fact, is what everyone should be doing regardless of how they look, where they were born, or what neighborhood they currently live in. These stories open our eyes to what can really happen if we work at it.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Latin@ Voices in Multicultural Education: From
Book SynopsisIn this unique, innovative, and visionary book, Latin@ Voices in Multicultural Education: From Invisibility to Visibility in Higher Education, Obiakor and Martinez highlight the visible voices of Latin@ teacher-scholars, professionals, and leaders. The authors agree with many Chican@ / Latin@ scholars (Cantú & Fránquiz, 2010) by using the term "Latin@" for the book as an all-inclusive label instead of "Latina/o" to de-emphasise the cisgendered "o/a" and uneven "Hispanic" terminology regarding individuals of Latin American heritage. These voices come from personal narratives of Latin@s in the United States (US) higher education. While their narratives expose different viewpoints and come from different personalities, institutions, and geographical locations, the complexities of their journeys have similar elements of true survival in unfamiliar Eurocentric terrains. In their respective chapters, they share their stories with veracity, acknowledge their remarkable contributions to their profession, and demonstrate that it is possible to be seen and heard in academic environments that have historically tried to silence their voices. Because of their pride, dedication, energy, resiliency, and courage, they are worthy of emulation; and all individuals, in spite of their culture, race, and national origin, can learn from them. Clearly, Latin@ Voices in Multicultural Education is a book for this day and age. It is intended for use by both undergraduate and graduate students, multicultural education scholars, faculty and staff in teacher preparation programs, higher education administrators, policy makers, and internal and external stakeholders in higher education. Hopefully, this book will motivate its readers to think and act differently, and to a large measure, shift their paradigms on how they treat and interact with individuals who appear different and atypical. Finally, this book will help everyone to value human differences; nurture multicultural dispositions and contexts; and navigate successfully through the mazes of bilingualism, multilingualism, multiculturalism, nationalism, and globalism.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Foreign-Born African Americans: Silenced Voices
Book SynopsisIn this book immigrant minorities from Africa and the Caribbean tell their unique stories. These ''new'' Americans recount their travels in the American maze, and thus, allow their voices to be heard. Who really cares for these voices? They do care and Americans should care! Foreign born African Americans frequently find themselves in precarious situations. They confront three intriguing questions: How Black are they? How much racism do they endure? How do they survive in spite of the odds? In reality, they are Blacks who are Black enough to encounter problems that other Blacks in America experience. However, they also understand that they must succeed in a competitive complex society like America. On the one hand, they are grateful to be in America; but on the other hand, they wonder why they must cross so many rubicons to achieve their goals. This book is unique! Never before have voices of Africans (from Africa and the Caribbean) been heard in this manner!! These voices provide multidimensional cases for scholars, educators, program planners, community leaders, and politicians. This book could be a required text for courses in international/global education, intercultural education, and multicultural education. It could also be a supplementary text for courses in general education and African/African American Studies. In fact, it should be on the reading list of every American interested in making our world a better place to live.

Volume 20 covers research, technology, and teacher preparation whilst volume 19 covered identification, assessment and instruction. The field of special education constantly changes as a result of legislation, new instructional formats and current research investigations. It can be difficult for general and special educators, school counselors and psychologists, administrators and practicing clinicians to keep up with these changes and be current in all areas relating to special education. The purpose of "Current Issues and Trends in Special Education" is to fill this void, providing chapters written by active researchers and practitioners in their respective areas.Table of ContentsList of Contributors.
