JCB Mohr (Paul Siebeck) Bodies and Affects in Market Societies
Book SynopsisHow are bodies and affects formed in liberal market societies? And, conversely, what roles do affects and bodies play in the genesis and stabilization of and changes to market societies? These are the questions examined by the authors in several insightful and theoretically ambitious case studies. The collection aims to present new approaches from the History of Emotions, Affect Studies, Actor-Network-Theory and other fields, putting them to the test in the analysis of capitalist societies. These investigations - by sociologists, ethnologists and historians - will tackle developments in the USA, Europe and Australia from the 19th through to the 21st Century. They will also - via their analyses of issues such as speculation, industrial production, advertising and ethics - examine historical and contemporary phenomena, shedding light on emerging viewpoints on work, consumption, class and gender.

Boydell & Brewer Ltd The Authorship of The Equatorie of the Planetis
Book SynopsisDetailed examination of the evidence linking the authorship of the Equatorie of the Planetis with Chaucer. The Equatorie of the Planetis, a Middle English text on the construction and use of a planetary equatorium, was composed in 1393. The unique manuscript, which appears to be the author's original, belongs to Peterhouse, Cambridge. In 1952 it was brought to general attention by Derek Price who argued that the text was written by Geoffrey Chaucer. Whether the Equatorie is indeed Chaucer's has remained controversial ever since. Dr Rand Schmidt's book offers a detailed examination of the literary, linguistic and codicological evidence linking the authorship of the Equatorie with Chaucer. She analyses and compares the manuscript with other specimens proposed asChaucer's hand, and evaluates the available methods of testing. The volume includes a new transcription of the Equatorie, accompanied by a facsimile of the MS, and a KWIC-concordance to the text. Diplomatic transcriptions of three Middle English astronomical texts have also been included and are printed here for the first time. Dr KARI ANNE RAND SCHMIDT is a language specialist, teaching in the Department of English at the University of Oslo.Trade ReviewAn invaluable survey of the problem of the Equatorie, which no serious Chaucerian should ignore. * MODERN LANGUAGE REVIEW *The general views matter and the details matter in this formidable book... excellent. * NOTES AND QUERIES *Table of ContentsPart I: The authorship debate; a holograph in Chaucer's hand?; is the "Equatorie" in Chaucer's dialect and ideolect; Chaucer's syntax?. PIE - Peter Lang La ligue d'Action française (1905-1936):

Amsterdam University Press Pope Eugenius III (1145-1153): The First
Book SynopsisElected pope in the wake of a rebellion, Eugenius III came to power as a relative unknown during a time of crisis. This book examines the controversial developments in papal justice and theological debate during his pontificate, his treatment of Cistercian monasteries, his relationships with France, Spain, and Rome, his work in the papal states, and the crusades. It offers a new view of an under-appreciated pope and the place of the church in a rapidly changing European society.Trade Review"This volume provides an important corrective on a pivotal pope, who despite the press of business and the failure of the Second Crusade, made a significant contribution to the extension of papal authority and the centralisation of the Church."- Kathleen G. Cushing, Journal of Ecclesiastical History, 70 (2019) "This collection of thirteen essays, prefaced with an introduction by Andrew Jotischky, shines a valuable spotlight on Eugenius’s activities, and reassesses his contributions to some of the major developments and events of the 1140s and 1150s."- Katharine Sykes, University of Birmingham, Journal of Church and State, Volume 61, Issue 3 (2019) "The other recipient of thanks (ignoring the contributors and editors) must be Amsterdam University Press. The series in which this book is published - Church, Faith and Culture in the Medieval West - has been peregrinating for the last few years. Fortunately, CFCMW seems now to have reached its own port of salvation with AUP [...] This is another excellent contribution to CFCMW’s series on 12th-/13th-century popes. Collectively, these volumes now stand as a vital resource for the history of the High Medieval papacy."- Benedict Wiedemann, Reviews in History (2019)Table of ContentsPreface Contributors Abbreviations Figures and Maps Introduction Andrew Jotischky 1. ‘Justinian’s Laws, Not the Lord’s’: Eugenius III and the learned laws.
