Taylor & Francis Ltd Working with Complexity in PTSD
Book SynopsisThis accessible, evidence-based book provides readers with a practical framework to understand, formulate, and treat PTSD using the cognitive model while creatively adapting for complexity.Cognitive therapy for PTSD is a highly effective treatment, but aspects of clinical complexity can complicate treatment and limit its effectiveness. Trauma memories themselves can be complex, the associated meanings can resist change and people may struggle to engage with them without feeling overwhelmed. Problems that commonly arise alongside PTSD add to clinical complexity, such as comorbid psychological or physical disorders, social problems, and ongoing risks. Bringing together the science and art of therapy, this book demonstrates how to approach these issues by holding firm to the principles of CBT, whilst flexing and creatively adapting techniques for each unique circumstance. Rich case studies, top tips, and frequently asked questions are used throughout to demonstrate the approach.Trade ReviewThis book is a fine example of ‘clinical flexibility within the framework of empirical fidelity’ in the treatment of patients with PTSD and co-occurring disorders. It is filled with a very useful collection of clinical interventions that you can use immediately. A combination of clinical wisdom and scholarship, KUDOS!Donald Meichenbaum, Ph.D. Research Director of the Melissa Institute of Violence Prevention Miami FloridaEvery therapist working with PTSD encounters complexities not addressed in training programs and treatment manuals. This is that rare book that addresses the broad range of challenging circumstances and complications that can so easily derail trauma treatment. With utter clarity, the authors detail multiple creative clinical strategies for managing nearly every potential stuckpoint likely to be encountered during trauma work. Practical and empirically grounded, this engaging text will empower and enlighten every therapist who reads it.-Christine A. Padesky, Author of The Clinician's Guide to CBT Using Mind Over Mood"Here is the book you’ve been waiting for, focusing on what you’re most likely to see when you’re working with clients with PTSD - complexities ranging from avoidance to multiple traumas to risky behaviours. Hannah Murray and Sharif El-Leithy provide a no-nonsense guide to treating the many complexities linked to PTSD without losing sight of the science behind the treatment. Jessica Kingsley Publishers A Guide to Psychological Debriefing: Managing
Book SynopsisIn its essence, this is a practical book that focuses on aiding recovery from trauma over a carefully structured timeframe. Amongst other things, it provides an introduction to the concept of psychological debriefing and some of the effects of trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This book will appeal to a broad audience because it is easily accessible, not only to those professionals working with clients suffering from PTSD, but also to health practitioners, psychologists, social workers and counsellors, as well as students.'- Well-Being'David Kinchin pays special attention to setting up optimal conditions to facilitate emotional decompression. He takes into account that trauma reactions, primarily concerned with survival, are whole-system reactions, affecting both the body and mind. He also reminds us that the initial impact of the trauma is on physical structures in the brain, disrupting memory-processing capacity, which is designed to create space and time to heal. We should all pay a great deal of attention to what he says.'- Professor Gordon Turnbull, Consultant Psychiatrist, University of Chester, Capio Nightingale Hospital, London and Ridgeway Hospital, Swindon, UKTraumatic events strike unexpectedly and turn everyday experiences upside down. Frequently, people suffering such trauma cannot shake the experience and develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Psychological debriefing (PD) is a widely practised process used as an intervention for treating people who have been exposed to trauma. It allows people who have been exposed to trauma to re-examine the traumatic event in a safe and controlled environment, and reduces the risks of developing PTSD.This book is a practical introduction to PTSD and psychological debriefing, and offers an enhanced model of PD which the author terms `Emotional Decompression'. Structured like a deep-sea dive, which has to include carefully planned safety stops on the way back to the surface to avoid getting `the bends', this model provides time frames for how long to spend at various stages of the PD process, and when to stop for discussions and explanations. The focus is on aiding recovery from this `invisible injury' over carefully structured time. The book presents a range of recovery models, from the `simple' models developed by Williams and Horowitz to the more complex `Snakes and Ladders' model developed by the author. Appendices include an essay by one of the world's leading exponents of psychological debriefing, Atle Dyregrov, as well as case studies of debriefs completed by the author, including that of a survivor of the July 7th bombings in London.A Guide to Psychological Debriefing is an essential book for health practitioners, counsellors, psychologists and professionals working with clients suffering from PTSD, as well as students.Trade ReviewWhat is most interesting about this work is an engagement with the recent debates and controversy about debriefing effectiveness, and whether it harms more than it helps those who participate in it... He clearly is talking from a knowledge base of personal and professional experience, and there is much to learn from this perspective. -- Therapy Today, Vee Howard-Jones, University of SalfordIf I were to receive an urgent email from my line manager, "What psychological support should we be providing in the aftermath of a critical incident? I need an answer for meeting on Tuesday", this is the first book to which I would turn. Not a word, not a bullet point is wasted in this brief guide. -- Healthcare Counselling and Psychotherapy JournalUnencumbered by over-theorising and based on personal experience, this practical "manual" will be a useful and easily accessible resource for professionals involved in providing psychological debriefing to trauma victims. -- Educational Psychology in PracticeI found this book informative and insightful. The author speaks with with authority, understanding and clarity. I recommend this book for any who counsel people who have suffered trauma. -- Accord (Association of Christian Counsellors)PTSD occurs when traumatic events strike unexpectedly and turn everyday experiences upside down. The need to try and make sense of what has happened especially when survival has been threatened is very important for a good recovery. The book examines in well defined chapters the basis of PTSD and looks beyond - at the treatment processes particulary Psychological Debriefing, what Emotional Decompression actually is, and the process of Defusing. The last two chapters cover recovery from PTSD and Training for Debriefers. -- Accord (Assoc. of Christian Counselleors)Table of ContentsForeword 1. Introduction to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. 2. Each disorder is discussed under the headings of Diagnosis (including Assessment Issues, Comorbidity, Course, and Differential Diagnosis, giving diagnostic decision trees where relevant) and Treatment (listing all therapeutic options, giving practical advice fTrade Review"In my opinion, this book would be worth borrowing from the library in order to read specific chapters of interest; perhaps, the common mental health conditions or a rarity recently encountered in clinic." Oxford University Press Concurrent Treatment of PTSD and Substance Use Disorders Using Prolonged Exposure COPE
Book SynopsisConcurrent Treatment of PTSD and Substance Use Disorders Using Prolonged Exposure (COPE) is a cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy program designed for patients who have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and a co-occurring alcohol or drug use disorder. COPE represents an integration of two evidence-based treatments: Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy for PTSD and Relapse Prevention for substance use disorders. COPE is an integrated treatment, meaning that both the PTSD and substance use disorder are addressed concurrently in therapy by the same clinician, and patients can experience substantial reductions in both PTSD symptoms and substance use severity. Patients use the COPE Patient Workbook while their clinician uses the Therapist Guide to deliver treatment. The program is comprised of 12 individual, 60 to 90 minute therapy sessions. The program includes several components: information about how PTSD symptoms and substance use interact with one another; information about the most common reactions to trauma; techniques to help the patient manage cravings and thoughts about using alcohol or drugs; coping skills to help the patient prevent relapse to substances; a breathing retraining relaxation exercise; and in vivo (real life) and imaginal exposures to target the patient''s PTSD symptoms.Trade ReviewCo-morbidity of PTSD and substance use disorders is as challenging as it is common in clinical practice. COPE offers the first integrated approach to treatment of these patients that has a solid foundation in evidence-based techniques and applies insights from basic neuroscience. Our experience with COPE for PTSD patients with alcohol addiction has been truly amazing. * Markus Heilig, MD PhD, Chief, Lab of Clinical and Translational Studies, NIAAA *COPE is a much-needed integrated treatment for substance use and posttraumatic stress disorders. This excellent therapist manual, and its accompanying patient workbook, will provide important guidance for clinicians in delivering COPE, thereby expanding the possibility of providing high-quality integrated care for individuals suffering from both of these illnesses. * Shelly F. Greenfield, MD, MPH, Chief Academic Officer, Chief, Division of Women's Mental Health, and Director of Clinical and Health Services Research and Education, Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse, McLean Hospital, and Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School *COPE is a long awaited and much needed treatment manual, developed by an outstanding group of clinicians and researchers. COPE will allow exposure therapy, a highly effective treatment for PTSD, to be more readily available to patients who also have a substance use disorder. I recommend this book to anyone who treats patients who have both PTSD and a substance use disorder. * Sonya B. Norman, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of California, San Diego *This pair of books brings science-based treatment techniques and skills to a population of clients and therapists in urgent need. Based on years of careful and systematic development, these books provide critical training in how to deliver prolonged exposure therapy techniques in those with substance addictions. They are a groundbreaking addition to any trauma and addiction therapist's treatment collection. * Denise Hien, PhD, ABPP, Professor of Clinical Psychology, City College, Graduate Center of the City University of New York *Clients will appreciate the user-friendly forms and worksheets to supplement their treatment with a qualified mental health professional. The workbook is also designed for clients who are motivated to work on their own. * Doody's Notes *Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction ; Chapter 2: Is This Program Right for You? ; Chapter 3: Session 1 ; Chapter 4: Session 2 ; Chapter 5: Session 3 ; Chapter 6: Session 4 ; Chapter 7: Session 5 ; Chapter 8: Session 6 ; Chapter 9: Session 7 ; Chapter 10: Session 8 ; Chapter 11: Session 9 ; Chapter 12: Session 10 ; Chapter 13: Session 11 ; Chapter 14: Session 12 ; Appendices

Baywood Publishing Company Inc A Cop Docs Guide to Public Safety Complex Trauma
Book SynopsisCop Doc''s Guide to Public Safety Complex Trauma Syndrome is written in response to the need for an advanced, specialized guide for clinicians to operationally define, understand, and responsibly treat complex post-traumatic stress and grief syndromes in the context of the unique varieties of police personality styles. The book continues where Rudofossi''s first book, Working with Traumatized Police Officer Patients, left off. Theory is wed to practice and practice to effective interventions with police officer-patients. The ''how'' and ''why'' of a clinician''s approach is made highly effective by understanding the distinct personality styles of officer-patients. Rudofossi''s theoretical approach segues into difficult examples that highlight each officer-patient''s eco-ethological field experience of loss in trauma, with a focus on enhancing resilience and motivation to - otherwise left disenfranchised. Thus, this original work expands the ecological-ethological existential analysis oTrade Review"One need not hold a Ph.D. or M.D. to appreciate the clinical sensitivity and useful insights that Dr. Rudofossi brings to this study of personality types of troubled police officers. He not only presents a classification model that is comprehensive in scope and rich in detail, but formulates a series of thoughtful treatment steps for use by experienced clinicians and novices alike." - Professor Theodore Millon, Ph.D., D.Sc., Dean and Scientific Director Institute for Advanced Studies in Personology and Psychopathology "Following his acclaimed Working with Traumatized Police Officer-Patients, in which 'Doc' Daniel Rudofossi spelled out what we are most often treating in officer-patients, this new book takes the next step: it searches out, for perhaps the first time, the commonalities in whom we are treating. We are offered the most effective words for psychotherapy: "By understanding..." The author's dictum: By understanding the common features of each police officer personality, we can effectively treat that individual. Dr. Rudofossi is police officer-patient centered. While not eschewing complexities, he presents an expert guide to treating complex post-traumatic stress and grief syndromes in police officers with an evidenced-based approach. This is both health-enhancing and better policing." - Antoon A. Leenaars, Ph.D. Author, Psychotherapy with Suicidal People: A Person-Centered Approach "Once again, in this sequel to his earlier book on traumatized police officers, Dr. Rudofossi has blended theoretical and practical applications of psychology and law enforcement. His approach of identifying the five varieties of public safety personality styles provides critical information for both mental health practitioners working with law enforcement personnel and law enforcement managers. This is an excellent book that should be read by all who work with, or are interested in, law enforcement officers!" - Thomas Creelman, M.A., CEAP, Employee Assistance Program Coordinator, New York State Office of the Attorney General "With his brilliant mind, amazing writing skills, experiential background, and psychological insight, Dr. Rudofossi offers the gift of his expertise in his profoundly interesting new book, A Cop Doc's Guide to Public Safety Complex Trauma Syndrome. A broad spectrum of readers will find complicated clinical theories coming alive with Dr. Rudofossi's use of case studies born in actual field experiences. This book promises to be stunningly useful in facilitating the healing process even when facing the most disenfranchising trauma." - Robert C Barnes, Ph.D., President, International Board of Directors Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy"Table of ContentsForeword by Dr. Allan W. WyattTrade Review'The Handbook of Research Methods in Complexity Science is an innovative addition to the literature on complexity theory in social science and policy studies. Many of us appreciate the benefits of a new way of thinking about, for example, complex policy making systems. This book takes the discussion forward by showing how we can research those systems, and use new empirical data to help us improve the way they work. This is an exciting prospects for researchers and practitioners.' --Paul Cairney, University of Stirling, UKTable of ContentsContents: Editors’ introduction by Eve Mitleton-Kelly, Alexandros Paraskevas and Christopher Day PART I COMPLEXITY SCIENCE RESEARCH PHILOSOPHY Introduction to Part I by Henrik Jeldtoft Jensen 1.
