C & T Publishing Sew Illustrated: 35 Charming Fabric & Thread
Book SynopsisFill your home with small works of art that embody the simple life. Start with 16 useful handmade gifts in the popular Zakka design style, then add adorable motifs pulled from everyday life. 35 charming designs are printed on iron-on transfer paper–have fun sketching them with bits of fabric and free-motion stitching. Customize a variety of bags, a fabric basket, a makeup roll, coasters, and more. You can even use images pulled from a photograph, a rubberstamp, or a child’s drawing.Trade ReviewAdorn fabric projects with machine or hand embroidered drawings and add a personal touch to all kinds of items with this book. There are sixteen projects and thirty-five different zakka style sketches on transfer paper plus plenty of ideas for producing your own. This is a great way of using up scraps of fabric too as many are incorporated into designs and best of all you don’t need much to get started. You don’t need to draw either when you have exhausted the transfers; rubber stamps, tracings, doodles and more can be utilised in this fun, modern style of embroidery. The book begins with the basic techniques, which are quite varied depending on how you want to approach your work. There are several methods of transferring designs, how to set up a sewing machine or what to use if you want to do it by hand and how to use fabric scraps. This book is the work of two friends and each has their own tips and methods which enhance the whole, showing that this is a style of embroidery that is very open to your own interpretation. The projects follow, each with a list of what you need, cutting guide, instructions with some photographs and a larger picture of the finished item. This is not a book for total sewing beginners but any improver level stitcher can join in the fun. Practice makes perfect when stitching small pictures with a sewing machine but there is not a lot of sewing knowledge required and there are also instructions on how to do it by hand if you prefer. Projects are grouped in themes and there are mats and coasters for the table, various bags, items for the sewing box, art to hang on the wall and “everyday” items such as a pencil case and a place to store brushes. Motifs include tea and coffee pots, sewing and crafting items, words, houses, hot air balloon and a family group traced from a photo. This is a fun book that encourages the reader to have a go and is an ideal way of making individual and personal gifts. * myshelf.com *I love this book! The projects use a variety of techniques, from quilting and appliqué to embroidery, and make the most perfect gifts. * Sew *Zakka is a Japanese term which encompasses the type of handmade items that enhance the home and make one feel good. It borrows from the idea of kitsch and 50s-70s décor but adds in an Asian style that is very contemporary. There are 16 lovely projects in this book that are sure to enhance your home or that of anybody you gift them to. I love the simple, practical, and modern appearance of these items. You don’t need to rush out and purchase any fancy kit; just your basic sewing tools and materials are all you require. Most of the items are not very large, either so using up leftovers from other projects makes them a very green way of having fun and making something new. This is also a great book for beginner sewists as each project is explained in step-by-step photographs, and there are many useful skills in here that will stand you in good stead throughout your sewing life. Some basic embroidery stitches, how to work with felt, basic quilting, putting in a zipper, appliqué, and more. In keeping with the zakka concept, this is a spaciously laid out book with a fresh, bright appearance. Each project has at least one large photograph of the item in situ, sometimes showing other options and different views, such as what it looks like inside. There is a list of tools and materials (all measurements in imperial), a handy cutting list, and the staged photographs with the instructions. Things to make include coasters with cute houses, macaroon shaped pincushions, scooter pillow, roll cake pencil case, patchwork basket and many bags and purses. Make one for your library books, evening clutch purse, travel organizer, zipper pouch, and shopping tote. These are the type of projects that make ideal gifts and don’t take too long to make or cost too much. There are also many ways of customizing them to make them truly yours, and scope for using up even the tiniest scraps of fabric. This is one of those books destined for my keeper shelf, and ideal for just about any level of sewist apart from total beginners. -- Rachel A Hyde * MyShelf.com *From purses to pouches and quilting to wool appliqué and embroidery, this book has something for everyone to sew. We learn to add zips , bag handles and hardware and the handmade items are ideal for gifting and perfect for keeping! * Machine Knitting Monthly *There's no better way to put off completing your many unfinished projects than by starting some new ones-16 to be exact! Book SynopsisEmbrace a simpler approach to stitching with bold one- and two-color embroidery motifs Zakka Embroidery presents designs that are an elegant blend of Japanese and Scandinavian style. The motifs and patterns are spare and graphic, yet softened with organic shapes and imagery drawn from nature. The result is embroidery that evokes a personal feel and conjures a sense of nostalgia. But when you take away that challenge, a whole world of texture and style becomes available. Here Japanese designer Yumiko Higuchi presents embroidery motifs to be stitched using just one or two colors?creating patterns and designs that are more evocative for their form than for a play of colors. Book SynopsisThis fun, quirky book is packed with 25 gorgeous, colourful skirts for adults up to size UK 20/US 16 and children from 2 years old. Using the clear explanation, useful sketches and beautiful pictures to guide you, choose from A-line, bell, circle, straight, gathered, wraparound and elasticated styles, and also learn how to add underskirts and create maternity wear. With tips on stitching, advice on choosing fabric and a comprehensive guide to cutting and using the patterns, Madame Zsazsa will show you exactly how to create your own fun and flattering designs!Trade ReviewI thoroughly enjoyed reading this book before attempting a pattern. Although I have dabbled in skirt making before, I thought to give this book the best review I would follow the instructions as they were. At times this left me in a bit of a middle where things didn't line up as much as I expected, although later found this was my fault not the book! So please ensure you read the instructions properly unlike me! Haha I have now made several skirts for my children using patterns from this book and they have all come out lovely. -- April Whittington * Customer Review *Dutch blogger Zsazsa presents numerous variations on a favorite beginner project—skirts—in this circus-themed collection of patterns for women and girls. Beginning with a basic elastic-waist skirt, She introduces additional details, such as zippers, knit-fabric waistbands, piping, and trims, to give each skirt a unique look. Patterns are provided for sizes ranging from children’s two through adult 16, with further customization possible based on Zsazsa’s suggestions. Options include pencil, A-line, wraparound, pleated, and bell skirts, as well as a maternity skirt with a stretchy panel and a girls’ skirt with a side tie. VERDICT Beginning sewists interested in exploring the basics of garment sewing will find numerous options in this fun collection * Library Journal USA *I think even if you are just starting or you are a confident sewer you will find something in this book. It includes patterns for both adult and children skirts but although the patterns provided are for specific age I think if you have a little bit of experience you can adjust them to the size you want so you can make matching skirts for example. The skirts all look very summery and relaxed. With the right choice of fabric you can make a very fun wardrobe ready for summer! Overall a great book! If you are getting into sewing or you know someone starting now it think it's worth getting it! -- Sophia Komnino * Customer Review *Wow, this truly is an emporium of wonders! The Book, which comes with full patterns ranging from child to adult, has a range of wonderful different types of skirts. The making of each skirt is described in detail and the range goes from simple to slightly more complicated making an ideal "course" in how to create your own wardrobe of skirts. Madame Zsazsa has created a book full of skirt patterns which si sure to keep your coming back for more and I can see some of these patterns becoming firm favourites to go to time and time again. -- Sian Lawton * Customer Review * An easy and enjoyable read from the start even for someone who knows about sewing. Love the part about you need a tape measure to put round your neck to make you look like a real professional. Good tips and sewing essentials for beginners. I am going to start on the pleated shirt with an angled yoke on page 134 with some lovely denim with pink design for my grandaughter. Each skirt is made to look so easy with good instructions and ideas to customise. Patterns do not have for seam allowance. -- Julie Snook * Customer Review *This book gives detailed instructions and full sized patterns to make 25 skirts. These are for adults and children - so something for everyone. The book is very informative and easy to understand. It would be ideal for people starting out making their own skirts and also for people looking to have many patterns in one place. I will definitely be making a couple of the skirts from this and also using it as a reference book to remind me of how to use patterns and complete wonderful garments. -- Lynne Harvey * Customer Review * I am really pleased with this book. The photos are bright and full of colour, showing all the skirts off. I like the idea that I can make any of the skirtsskirts for my daughters or myself. The instructions are clear and I am pleased to see that Madame Zsazsa explains how to lengthen any of the skirts. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to make a number of different skirts, even a beginner. -- Alison Stevens * Customer Review *I love this book. The patterns are clear & easy to follow. Great idea to include patterns for both children & adults, although I'm quite sure my daughter would have been horrified to be wearing the same skirt as her mother! -- Lesley Ann Evans * Customer Review *Table of ContentsThe very very beginning 5 How should I use this book? 6 What do I need to know already? 6 A highly in-depth sewing course lasting around a quarter of an hour 8 The skirt-making sequence 11 1.
