Cranthorpe Millner Publishers Wicked Women Of Yore: Were They Really Wicked?
Book SynopsisA spellbinding literary journey of murder, mayhem, blackmail and infamy. A Hungarian Countess allegedly bathes in the blood of her victims; a pair of female pirates outfight the rest of the crew; a Roman Empress has several senators and members of her family killed so that she can fulfil her sexual desires. These are just four of the thirty-six Wicked Women of Yore who ‘star’ in these pages. This book explores how women such as Ilsa Koch, the bestial Nazi concentration camp commander, Bonnie (of Bonnie and Clyde), ‘Princess Caraboo’ and Queen Isabella, the ‘She-Wolf of France,’ murdered, conned and blackmailed their way into history and infamy. The author also imagines the conversations they might have had, as he describes the scenes of their crimes. D. Lawrence-Young has written over twenty historical novels. In this companion volume to his Villains of Yore, this book will open your eyes to the fact that the fairer sex was not always so fair in the past. From now on you will look at women, young and old, beautiful and ugly, in a completely new and different light.

Circa Press Alejandra Guerrero - Wicked Women
Book Synopsis"I like depicting sexy, strong women - the spirit of a dominatrix. Through my work I explore the part of my personality that enjoys teasing and provocation. In doing this, I've seen the change and growth of myself as a person, a woman, a lover, a critical open-minded thinker and, most important, as an artist." - Alejandra Guerrero. In the second decade of the twenty-first century we are witnessing an unprecedented exploration of female sexual power, while on the other hand reactionary cultural forces contrive to keep women as defenceless as possible. In this context, the work of photographer Alejandra Guerrero can be understood as a clarion call. Hers is a rarefied visual art that marks a turning point for female sexuality in erotica, her eloquent tableaux revealing the intricate ways in which women exert their erotic power. Here we see a future in which women dictate raw, yet refined desires. Each moment comes from the erotic fever dreams of the participants and the desires of the woman behind the camera. Sometimes, when Guerrero turns the lens upon herself, those moments are one and the same. Kent State University Press The Fifth Star: Ohio's Fight for Women's Right to
Book SynopsisHow Ohio's women were essential to the national women's suffrage movement Conversations and legal battles surrounding voting rights, once again a topic looming large in the United States, reflect a long history of such debates and suffrage campaigns. The struggle for women's voting rights, in particular, required persistence in the face of defeat, and unbeknownst to most people, Ohio—the fifth state to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment—played a key role in the national women's suffrage movement.Covering 70 years of the movement, from 1850 through 1920, Jamie Capuzza demonstrates that the tendency to overlook the contributions of Ohio suffragists dates back to the earliest years of the movement. Ohioans were the first to petition a government for women's enfranchisement, and Ohioans helped build the infrastructure for the movement by forming the nation's first state women's rights organization and by hosting two of the earliest national women's rights conventions. Many of the movement's early leaders were Ohioans, including Frances Barker Gage, a movement leader since the 1850s who was among the first to emphasize the inherent connections between gender and race by linking women's suffrage to African American suffrage; Victoria Claflin Woodhull, a stockbroker, newspaper publisher, and radical activist who was the first woman ever to address the US Congress or to run for the US presidency; and Harriet Taylor Upton, president of the Ohio Women's Suffrage Association longer than any other woman and executive in the National American Woman's Suffrage Association, who hobnobbed with presidents and congressmen. Also among the leadership were African Americans with Ohio connections such as Mary Church Terrell, Frances Harper, Julia Cooper, Hallie Brown, Jane Hunter, Carrie Clifford, and Jewelia Higgins. The Fifth Star describes these determined leaders, their agenda, organizational capacity, and political engagement. Drawing on extensive historical records and primary sources, including suffrage convention proceedings, state senate and house reports, local mainstream and feminist media, and the personal letters and diaries of Ohio reformers, Capuzza details this fight in the context of the national women's rights movement and parallel reform movements like abolitionism and temperance. The Fifth Star is a story of remarkable perseverance and determination in pursuit of the most fundamental right in a democracy, the right to vote.Trade Review"In The Fifth Star, Jamie Capuzza deftly situates Ohio women's long fight for social reform and women's rights within the larger arc of US women's history. Capuzza brings to life a colorful cast of Ohio women, long overshadowed by their sisters to the east, who fought side by side with the likes of Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Carrie Chapman Catt. And offering a timely reminder to readers today, Capuzza also shows how women working at the local and state levels can drive national movements for change. The Fifth Star will likely stand as the definitive history of Ohio women's struggle to secure their rights for decades to come." —Gina M. Martino, author of Women at War in the Borderlands of the Early American Northeast

University of Pennsylvania Press Wicked Flesh: Black Women, Intimacy, and Freedom
Book SynopsisThe story of freedom pivots on the choices black women made to retain control over their bodies and selves, their loved ones, and their futures. The story of freedom and all of its ambiguities begins with intimate acts steeped in power. It is shaped by the peculiar oppressions faced by African women and women of African descent. And it pivots on the self-conscious choices black women made to retain control over their bodies and selves, their loved ones, and their futures. Slavery's rise in the Americas was institutional, carnal, and reproductive. The intimacy of bondage whet the appetites of slaveowners, traders, and colonial officials with fantasies of domination that trickled into every social relationship—husband and wife, sovereign and subject, master and laborer. Intimacy—corporeal, carnal, quotidian—tied slaves to slaveowners, women of African descent and their children to European and African men. In Wicked Flesh, Jessica Marie Johnson explores the nature of these complicated intimate and kinship ties and how they were used by black women to construct freedom in the Atlantic world. Johnson draws on archival documents scattered in institutions across three continents, written in multiple languages and largely from the perspective of colonial officials and slave-owning men, to recreate black women's experiences from coastal Senegal to French Saint-Domingue to Spanish Cuba to the swampy outposts of the Gulf Coast. Centering New Orleans as the quintessential site for investigating black women's practices of freedom in the Atlantic world, Wicked Flesh argues that African women and women of African descent endowed free status with meaning through active, aggressive, and sometimes unsuccessful intimate and kinship practices. Their stories, in both their successes and their failures, outline a practice of freedom that laid the groundwork for the emancipation struggles of the nineteenth century and reshaped the New World.Trade Review"Wicked Flesh is a long overdue, marvelous account of the complexities of Black women’s lives in the Atlantic World. This compelling history shows the importance of Black femmes in the making and unmaking of the Atlantic World, creating changes that last until this day." * Connections *"Wicked Flesh focuses on a practice that has defined Black womanhood for centuries: the way that Black women have created alternative forms of kinship and structured intimacy as a practice of freedom, in opposition to white-supremacist narratives about our inherent wickedness . . . Johnson's work is an archival tour de force. The book incorporates the French and Spanish colonial paper trail of Louisiana's tumultuous 18th century (first under French rule, then Spanish, then French again). The book ends with the dawn of US rule." * Public Books *"Johnson pushes readers to expand their thinking surrounding the lived experiences of free women of African descent in the French Atlantic during the long eighteenth century...[A]n impressive work. Wicked Flesh is a welcome and much-needed addition to numerous fields of scholarship, including the French Atlantic, the African diaspora, Black women’s history, and comparative history. The study is as revelatory as it is impressive in its scope, analysis, and historical detective work. Both her argument and her theoretical approach are important and timely." * Emily Clark, author of The Strange History of the American Quadroon: Free Women of Color in the Revolutionary Atlantic World *"With its deep archival research and compelling analysis, Wicked Flesh paints fascinating portraits of individual women and their efforts to practice freedom and firmly situates New Orleans within the larger French Atlantic world." * Jennifer Spear, author of Race, Sex, and Social Order in Early New Orleans *

Book SynopsisUsing firsthand interviews, archival documents, and visual analysis, Superfluous Women explores the intersections between art, protest, and feminism in today's Ukraine.Trade Review"Superfluous Women is clearly a labor of empathy and solidarity with Ukrainians, and the inter-revolutionary generation in particular. As a path-blazing study on the topic, it should be valued as the result of a decade’s worth of intellectual production, which included numerous research trips and prolonged periods of work in the region, amassing an archive, as well as the work of cultural diplomacy, translating and representing Ukrainian artists and activists in the West." -- Sasha Razor * H-SHERA *"[Zychowicz] introduces several important art projects and movements that are indicative of a unique time in Ukraine’s post-independence history. Anyone with an interest in mammals beyond Homo sapiens should enjoy this book. It’s a great way to learn the rest of the story about mammals such as chipmunks, opossums and squirrels that share your yard. It will also open eyes to species that most people probably don’t know about, such as least weasel, star-nosed mole and 13-lined ground squirrel.” -- Jim McCormac * Columbus Dispatch, April 17, 2022 *“Clear, well written, and comprehensive … this book is a major contribution to the education of students and the public and an outstanding resource for educators and researchers. The strong conservation focus and extensive literature review … are critically important contributions to the environmental issues affecting the state’s mammals.” -- Robert M. Timm, Natural History Museum, University of Kansas, and past president, American Society of Mammalogists“Mammals of Ohio provides an updated and very readable overview of this fauna. Harder and Cameron provide keys to identify otherwise difficult species and summarize the distribution and natural history of all species, with information on distribution, habitat preferences, diet, reproduction, behavior, causes of mortality, and conservation status, with ample citation to relevant literature. This impressive effort will be obligatory reading for mammalogists and wildlife biologists, but is accessible to laypersons and natural historians as well.” -- Douglas A. Kelt, coauthor of A Manual of the Mammalia: An Homage to Lawlor’s “Handbook to the Orders and Families of Living Mammals”“Drs. Harder and Cameron are well suited to provide concise, informative accounts of the morphology and dental characteristics, current distribution, aspects of ecology, physiology and life history, and conservation issues of the fifty-five extant mammalian species currently known to occur in Ohio. Like other superb Mammals of books for various states, this indispensable, authoritative volume belongs on the bookshelves or in the backpacks of wildlife professionals, mammalogists, students, academics, and amateur naturalists alike.” -- George A. University of Massachusetts Press The Virtuous and Violent Women of
Book SynopsisDismantling the image of the peaceful and serene colonial goodwife and countering the assumption that New England was inherently less violent than other regions of colonial America, Emily C. K. Romeo offers a revealing look at acts of violence by Anglo-American women in colonial Massachusetts, from the everyday to the extraordinary. Using Essex County as a case study, Romeo deftly utilizes seventeenth- and eighteenth-century sources to demonstrate that Puritan women, both ""virtuous"" and otherwise, learned to negotiate the shifting boundaries between acceptable and unacceptable violence in their daily lives and communities. The Virtuous and Violent Women of Seventeenth-Century Massachusetts shows that more dramatic violence by women -- including infanticide, the scalping of captors during the Indian Wars, and even witchcraft accusations -- was not necessarily intended to challenge the structures of authority but often sprung from women's desire to protect property, safety, and standing for themselves and their families. The situations in which women chose to flout powerful social conventions and resort to overt violence expose the underlying, often unspoken, priorities and gendered expectations that shaped this society.Trade ReviewRomeo's centering of women's violence has the potential to change how readers understand colonial New England. Her clear style will appeal both to university instructors and general readers beyond academia." —Erika Gasser, author of Vexed with Devils: Manhood and Witchcraft in Old and New EnglandTable of Contents Introduction Chapter 1 -- The Limits of Household Violence: Order and Disorder Chapter 2 - From ""That wicked house"": Women and Infanticide Chapter 3 -- Almost Inconceivable Foes: Anglo-American Women and Indian War Chapter 4 -- 'The Devil will Bless himself, to find suChapter a convenient Lodging': Women and the Witchcraft Threat Chapter 5 -- Female Violence: Potential Threat to Cultural Weapon
