Oxford University Press Inc Wounds Not Healed by Time
Book SynopsisHow should we respond to injuries done to us and to the hurts that we inflict on others? In this thoughtful book, Wounds Not Healed By Time, Solomon Schimmel guides us through the meanings of justice, forgiveness, repentance, and reconciliation. In doing so, he probes to the core of the human encounter with evil, drawing on religious traditions, psychology, philosophy, and the personal experiences of both perpetrators and of victims. Christianity, Judaism and Islam call for forgiveness and repentance in our relations with others. Yet, as Schimmel points out, there are significant differences between them as to when and whom to forgive. Is forgiving always more moral than refusing to forgive? Is it ever immoral to forgive? When is repentance a pre-condition for forgiveness, and what does repentance entail? Schimmel explores these questions in diverse contexts, ranging from conflicts in a marriage and personal slights we experience every day to enormous crimes such as the Holocaust. He aTrade Review"A thorough and thoughtful book on a subject that could not be more important in the years ahead."--Jerusalem Post"The author maintains that 'therapists, clergy, and pastoral counselors need to familiarize themselves with the philosophical, theological, and psychological literature on forgiveness if they intend to incorporate it into their practices constructively.' For professional and layman alike, this thoughtful and accessible volume is a good place to start."--First Things"A tough, intellectually cogent analysis of repentance and forgiveness--issues that are generally relegated to sermonizing. This is not a sermon. It is a powerful and readable work of scholarship, imbued with the passion of a scholar who understands both evil and forgiveness and the difficult relationship between them."--Alan Dershowitz, author of Shouting Fire: Civil Liberties in a Turbulent Age"A nuanced and intellectually rich treatment of repentance and forgiveness.... Wounds Not Healed by Time is a remarkable exposition of the ways we deal--or might deal--with wrongs we commit against each other."--Avodah Newsletter"Schimmel brings a high level of scholarship, a deeply personal tone and an accessible writing style to complex questions of repentance and forgiveness.... Most admirably, Schimmel adds his own voice in a way that seems to come less from books than from the heart."--Publishers Weekly"Deftly elucidates topics of revenge, justice, why and when to forgive, how to forgive, repentance, and reconciliation. He deals sensitively with these issues at the personal level and also includes institutional or national perspectives through an examination of America's race relations, the Vatican's recent apologies, Israeli-Palestinian conflicts, and the South African experience with its Truth and Reconciliation Commission.... He criticizes the pressure in our culture to forgive too quickly and provides a respectful questioning of that pressure's Christian roots. This can serve as a self-help book for sophisticated readers or as a starting point for philosophical consideration of the topic."--Library Journal"In this honest, eloquent book, Solomon Schimmel invites us to view the relation of forgiveness and repentance through multiple religious, secular, personal and social lenses. Christian readers, in particular, should ponder carefully his strong argument that forgiveness without repentance is morally unsupportable."--Donald W. Shriver, President Emeritus, Union Theological Seminary, and author of An Ethic for Enemies: Forgiveness in Politics"From Jerusalem to the Vatican to Capetown, Schimmel takes us on a scholarly journey through humanity's struggle to understand and cope with evil. He argues, with both passion and insight, that our only hope for a sane future lies in overcoming our natural tendencies toward vengeance and replacing them with a balance of justice, forgiveness, and repentance. Fortunately for the human race, we can, Schimmel insists, learn to forgive. Let's hope he's right."--Robert Epstein, Ph.D., Editor-in-Chief, Psychology Today, and University Research Professor, California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University"Drawing on a rich array of sources and writing with one eye on theology and one on more contemporary psychological attitudes, Schimmel's work will go far towards deepening our understanding of the contradictory, ambivalent, difficult, yet ultimately redeeming processes of forgiveness. This remains a knowledge that we, unfortunately, will have to draw on for many years to come."--Adam B. Seligman, author of Modernity's Wager"Solomon Schimmel brings the Jewish and the Christian teachings about forgiveness and repentance together with the findings of modern psychology in a way that illuminates all three sources of insight. By refusing to sever forgiveness from justice and repentance, Schimmel provides a much-needed corrective to the soft-headed, sentimental thinking that usually pervades the discussion."--Jon D. Levenson, Albert A. List Professor of Jewish Studies, Harvard University, and author of The Death and Resurrection of the Beloved Son

University of Notre Dame Press Touch the Wounds
Book SynopsisTrade Review“Touch the Wounds will be a source of great insight and inspiration for seekers, drawn potentially to Christian faith, and will liberate many others from stultifying forms of false certainty. It will open others again to ecumenical exchanges that will enrich their faith. The world needs more Tomáš Halík.” —Charles Taylor, co-author of Reconstructing Democracy“We’re part of a world full of wounds. For many people, the dark cloud of pain conceals the certainty of faith; the face of a benevolent God is hidden in the darkness that we are passing through together. But the Easter scene that inspired this book can speak to us with enormous urgency precisely at such a time. It is through Jesus’s wounds that the apostle Thomas sees God.” —from the preface"One of the most profound meditations on suffering, from a Christian perspective, that I have ever read." —James Martin, SJ, author of Learning to Pray"Tomáš Halík's Touch the Wounds is an elegant and profound set of meditations on the place and purpose and meaning of suffering. Halík shows that, and how, attention to suffering is attention to Jesus, and, therefore, a means of entry for Christians into the world's healing. It is a lovely book, and an inspiring one." —Paul J. Griffiths, author of Regret: A Theology"Tomáš Halík is one of the most insightful voices in contemporary Catholicism, and his book on the wounded church and sin in the church is a turning point in the effort to make sense of the ecclesial crisis that has taken shape in the last few years: from the new phase in the abuse crisis to the pandemic." —Massimo Faggioli, author of Catholicism and Citizenship"In this deeply personal narrative, Tomáš Halík invokes the figure of Thomas, less to affirm the importance of doubt in religious life than to remind us that Christian faith passes through our wounds and through the reality of pain and suffering. As ever, Halík manages to offer a fresh and hopeful Christian message without condemning the secular world." —Catherine Cornille, co-author of Christian Identity between Secularity and Plurality"What we need now is the voice of a prophet in the tradition of Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Isaiah, who were unafraid to confront hypocrisy in high places and fearless in identifying the self-inflicted wounds of a society in desperate need of a particular and urgent healing touch. That prophetic voice for our time and our world belongs to Tomáš Halík, an impressive scholar who writes with flawless grace and instinct so that truth is disclosed page after page in his latest, powerful book." —Doris Donnelly, editor of Sacraments and Justice"Tomáš Halík's Touch the Wounds is a masterfully written, personal, and at the same time critical book that brings into dialogue contemporary life experience, biblical message, mystical tradition, and modern criticism of religion, all showing how in the wounds of our world as Christians we touch the wounds of God not by turning away from suffering but by confronting it. A fascinating, challenging, and encouraging vision." —Cardinal Walter Kasper, president emeritus of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity"Offers profound reflections on faith and its roots in suffering. . . . Halík’s erudition is dizzying . . . with a theological depth that makes for slow, rewarding reading. . . . those seeking deeper Christian insight will find much to gain." —Publishers Weekly"Consistent with his numerous other writings on faith in a post-religious and post-secular age, Halik, a Czech Roman Catholic priest, offers a series of meditative reflections on finding faith amidst our personal, interpersonal, and social wounds. . . . [T]he overall effect is a beautiful and challenging account of a Gospel-inspired faith that highlights the extreme paradox of God becoming flesh, and thus a God who indwells our creaturely vulnerability without reserve." —Theological Studies"A fine resource for Lenten and Eastertide reading—or, for that matter, in any season when wisdom is sought." —Commonweal“Masterfully translated—conveying both the insights and personality of Halík—by the distinguished Gerald Turner.... A balm to the soul for those who are battered by this world and find their own faith wounded.” —Scottish Theological Journal“A rich tapestry capable of nourishing and sustaining Christian faith and theology in a shifting cultural context. . . . Halík offers hope in rebuilding faith through facing up to the challenges of a future for which our recent past has not fully prepared us.” —Modern Theology"A profound yet accessible meditation on faith in our secular age. ...Halík offers not simply a corrective on how to approach seekers, but also a rich spiritual reflection intended to help us lead with our wounds....Halík’s book is a provocation in the best sense of the term, one that pushes his reader to leave behind a pristine faith that prefers to rest in certainty in exchange for one that asks the 'agonized question' and, like St. Thomas, does not shy from the wounded world." — AmericaTable of ContentsPreface to the English-language Edition The Gate of the Wounded Without Distance Arcanum Cordis A Torn Veil A Dancing God Worshiping the Lamb Stigmata and Forgiveness Knocking on the Wall Bodies A Little Place for Truth Veronica and the Imprint of the Face Wounds Transformed The Last Beatitude

Book SynopsisA breathtaking novel of grief, love, creativity and a young woman's queer and artistic awakening. In the days after her mother's death from breast cancer, Oksana, a young queer poet, decides to return her mother's ashes to their working-class hometown in Siberia. It is a journey home that will take her through the raw, almost dreamlike emotions of early grief through to an acceptance of the wound that death leaves behind. As she navigates the rituals of parting, Oksana feels her way through memory and heartache with a wry humour, reflecting on her complex relationship with her mother and on her own experiences of love, loss, sexuality and the search for home.Powerful, lyrical and precise, this extraordinary debut is a novel which blurs the line between reality and creation. Wound is both an exploration of grief and a journey towards love, happiness and creative fulfilment.Translated from the Russian by Elina Alter"This is not just an amazing novel, extremely frank, extremely accurate and extremely addictive, but, perhaps, a book about finding happiness" The Blueprint"Wound is a poet's novel . . . a primer on feminist thought for readers with Pushkin in their veins" European Review of BooksTrade ReviewIt is heartening to see public recognition of Vasyakina, a feminist activist and a lesbian, whose work does not hide but rather publicises her orientation and her politics...Elina Alter does justice to Vasyakina's style, whose clarity and unpretentiousness results in a work of great inner power -- EUGENE OSTASHEVSKY * author of The Pirate Who Does Not Know the Value of Pi *Wound is a poet's novel, structured like "a pebble dropped into water" . . . a primer on feminist thought for readers with Pushkin in their veins * European Review of Books *From very personal experiences, Vasyakina has written a frank text about memory, her own sexuality, the relationship between mother and daughter * Forbes Russia *Wound is a story about how wounds can heal. To do this, they need to grope, understand and speak. This is not just an amazing novel, extremely frank, extremely accurate and extremely addictive, but, perhaps, a book about finding happiness * The Blueprint *This book is impossible to swallow or read in one gulp. I, who always read very quickly, only needed twenty pages. Then I had to step back, catch my breath, look at the surrounding objects, return to the familiar world - which, it seemed, would never be the same again. There is such density, concentration of thoughts and feelings in the text, that one wants to live and realize each fragment separately * Snob *It is the rare and therefore especially valuable ability to see the forest, while distinguishing individual trees in it, and to generalize without falling into the sin of superficial simplification, which makes Oksana Vasyakina's Wound one of the most important texts published in Russian in 2021 * Meduza *In this moving, poetic autobiographical novel, family trauma is inseparable from national history. Returning to Siberia with her mother's ashes, a daughter revisits the primal scenes of four generations. In the process, she invents a new way of existing as a queer woman from the Russian provinces -- SOPHIE PINKHAM * author of Black Square: Adventures in Post-Soviet Ukraine *Deeply moving, Wound flows from a faith in the emancipatory power of literature that has become all too rare. One of the most refreshing young voices I've encountered in contemporary literature -- JESSI JEZEWSKA STEVENS * author of The Exhibition of Persephone Q and The Visitors *Acutely necessary. Wound is a bold, human, powerful meditation on how a language of love and death takes shape -- POLINA BARSKOVA * author of Living Pictures *In Vasyakina's magnificent Wound, a woman goes on a pilgrimage to bury her mother's ashes in the small Siberian town of her birth, a place where lesbians 'didn't exist.' Urn under arm, the prodigal daughter returns: a queer in Putin's Russia, a poet who first glimpses herself whole-'soft and agape'-in the gaze of her girlfriend. The narration pivots through time in Elina Alter's resonant translation. 'Poetry is my method of forgetting in such a way that what I forget becomes known to others.' I remain awed by the expansive emotional geography of this book, which reads like a novel yet tastes like a poem. -- ALINA STEFANESCU * author of Dor *Oksana Vasyakina's Wound is a rare work of towering honesty and lyricism. Few writers can hold such poise amidst the wilderness of human emotion and render language both brutal and magnanimous -- Yelena MoskovichLyrical and profound, this one is a truly special book by one of Russia's boldest voices * Glamour *raw and hypnotic * New York Times *A seriousness of purpose is explored through prose, poetry and an essay on the links between weaving and writing with some comparative thoughts on the difficulties of mother/daughter relationships... Only an author of great skill could hold such disparate material together while also questioning her own method throughout the process. But Vasyakina successfully folds the untidy past into the unsettled present, demonstrating how inseparable they are to the person she is... -- Declan O'Driscoll * Irish Times *This is a study of grief and an accounting of a coming-to-consciousness as a queer subject in a repressive state. It also left me feeling joyful, grateful, enlightened - and lighter.... [Wound] is a novel to savour and to recommend to queer and straight friends alike, precisely for how it explores the possibilities of discontinuity * Times Literary Supplement *

Book SynopsisAre we healed through our wounds or do our wounds themselves get healed by some other source? In this 2025 Lent Book, Erik Varden starts by examining the New Testament where it spells out why Christ's wounds were efficacious for the healing of humankind. Indeed, why they were necessary for the purpose. This austere way of thinking is indispensable but they have never really satisfied the effective needs of believers or the intuitions of the heart.Bob Dylan once said, tongue in cheek, Pain sure does bring out the best in people.' The philosopher Donald MacKinnon said, Suffering never ennobled anyone.' These are questions people wrestle with today in many fields of life with counsellors, therapists, philosophers, and spiritual directors. But the conundrum remains and in this book Varden sets out to resolve it.

Arc Publications The Wound
Book SynopsisThe Wound is the latest collection from esteemed Australian poet John Kinsella, whose previous accolades include the Grace Leven Poetry Prize, the John Bray Award for Poetry, the Age Poetry Book of the Year Award, and three-times winner of the Western Australian Premier's Book Award for Poetry. Kinsella describes himself as a 'vegan anarchist pacifist', and The Wound was inspired by his anger towards the destruction being wrought on the West Australian coastal bushland by the controversial proposed construction of the Roe 8 Highway Extension, which environmentalists protested would endanger the area's wildlife, the biodiversity of which is equal to that of the whole of England. In this collection Kinsella mixes mythology with modernity, as this collection includes two books of poems, the first inspired by the character of Mad King Sweeney from Irish epic Buile Shuibhne, and the second comprised of works 'interacting' with poems written by German Romantic Friedrich Hölderlin.

Book SynopsisA family story of blood and memory and the haunting power of the past.2018 WINNER OF THE CHRISTOPHER EWART-BIGGS MEMORIAL PRIZE2017 WINNER OF THE NON-FICTION IRISH BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARDA SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLERAfter nearly three decades reporting conflict from all over the world for the BBC, Fergal Keane has gone home to Ireland to tell a story that lies at the root of his fascination with war. It is a family story of war and love, and how the ghosts of the past return to shape the present.Wounds is a powerful memoir about Irish people who found themselves caught up in the revolution that followed the 1916 Rising, and in the pitiless violence of civil war in north Kerry after the British left in 1922.It is the story of Keane's grandmother Hannah Purtill, her brother Mick and his friend Con Brosnan, and how they and their neighbours took up guns to fight the British Empire and create an independent Ireland. And it is the story of another Irishman, Tobias O'Sullivan, who fought against them as a policeman because he believed it was his duty to uphold the law of his country. Many thousands of people took part in the War of Independence and the Civil War that followed. Whatever side they chose, all were changed in some way by the costs of violence. Keane uses the experiences of his ancestral homeland in north Kerry to examine why people will kill for a cause and how the act of killing reverberates through the generations.Trade Review‘Few books this year have been as moving Keane’s account of his family’s experience during the conflicts that tore Ireland apart… Keane writes with an impeccable eye for details and a profound sensitivity to human suffering’ Books of the Year, Sunday Times, Dominic Sandrook ‘While Keane is acutely aware of the allure and the danger of myth, he also has an objective reporter’s eye for the human tragedies of those caught up in the heightening viciousness … Ireland has not always borne in mind all its dead. You don’t need interest in Irish history to be swept away by characters who leap off page, facing impossible choices in the struggle for dignity and independence’ Samantha Power, author of A Problem from Hell ‘A fine and troubling book … Keane is a gifted writer whose scarifying experiences in war zones have not coarsened his humanity. Nor does his emotional reaction to terrible cruelty lessen his determination to tell the truth. He admits here to just one bias: “a loathing of war and of all who celebrate the killing of their fellow men and women”. Inner Traditions Bear and Company Healing the Wounds of the Heart: 15 Obstacles to
Book SynopsisCan everything be forgiven? Forgiving the small and average sufferings experienced throughout life is one thing. But what about bigger transgressions, like infidelity, abuse, or even large-scale offenses such as genocide? Showing that forgiveness is the healing of the heart’s wounds as well as the revival of love, Olivier Clerc looks at what prerequisites might be needed to enter into a process of forgiving and what the effects of doing so might be, for oneself as much as, if not more than, for the perpetrator. He identifies 15 obstacles to forgiveness--prejudices, confusions, false ideas, misunderstandings--and discusses where these perceptions and obstacles originate from, which keep many of us from taking the path to healing. Exploring how to overcome the obstacles to forgiveness and how to let go and change our thinking, the author details four practical methods for forgiveness, each with a unique approach: the Hawaiian practice of Ho’oponopono, Colin Tipping’s Radical Forgiveness, Fred Luskin’s Nine Steps to Forgiveness, and the author’s own Gift of Forgiveness, inspired by his work with don Miguel Ruiz. Drawing from his years of forgiveness work as well as from the Forgiveness Project, he shares inspiring testimonies and examples from both victims and perpetrators who have rebuilt their lives after trauma by walking the path of conscious forgiveness. Clerc reveals how choosing to engage in a conscious process of forgiving our perpetrators--while not without struggle--helps stop a spiral of destruction, cleanses the heart, and leads to relief, freedom, and inner peace. Even when faced with the unspeakable, forgiveness is a path we can all take and in doing so we recover our full capacity to love and find happiness.Trade Review“In an ever more closely intertwined world, forgiveness could be called the number one survival skill. Olivier Clerc has an amazing record of spreading the word, and I cannot recommend his book too highly for any conscious human being.” * Pierre Pradervand, author of The Gentle Art of Blessing *“Healing the Wounds of the Heart is a superb book that allows us to understand both the why and how to forgive. The author’s study and practice shows his deep understanding of forgiveness. He offers compelling insights and moving stories. It is rare to find a book that is both simple and deep. I recommend this book without hesitation.” * Frederic Luskin, Ph.D., author of Forgive for Good and director of the Stanford University Forgivene *“Beyond answering the important question framed in the title, this book does a superb job of teasing out the nuances of forgiveness from beginning to end, reflecting the author’s deep experience, wisdom, and heart. For the person who wants to understand forgiveness, this book is an excellent choice. For the one ready to forgive, several practical approaches are provided. For those struggling with forgiveness, the book provides an invaluable discussion of the obstacles to forgiveness and the spiritual development that is possible to those who apply themselves to this path.” * Eileen Barker, author of the Forgiveness Workbook and founder of the Path of Forgiveness *“This might be one of the most important books you will ever read. Everyone, without exception, has some forgiveness issues. Unknowingly, these issues drain our life of true vitality and joy. We’ve all heard that it’s good to forgive. The uniqueness of Olivier’s book lies in its clear explanation of why we probably won’t do just that. As a teacher of personnel development, I have seen people transformed and released upon realizing specifically why they hold on to pain and judgment. You can see in their eyes the immense gift it is to finally free the heart so it can love and dance once more. Read this book, free yourself.” * Bernard Groom, A Course in Miracles teacher *Table of ContentsForeword byLewis Mehl-Madrona, M.D.Preface PART 1 Forgiveness Defined Forgiveness -- What Is It Really?Forgiveness or Healing the Wounds of the Heart PART 2 The Main Obstacles to Forgiveness and How to Overcome Them 1 Forgiveness Would Exclusively Be a ReligiousPractice Practical Method #1--Forgive for Good: Dr Fred Luskin’s 9 Steps2 Forgiveness as Outmoded and Outdated 3 Forgiveness Would Mainly Be a Gift to the Other 4 Forgiving Would Amount to Condoning, Accepting, and Excusing 5 Forgiving Would Be Impossible without the Other Offering Their Apologies or Asking for Forgiveness Practical Method #2--Colin Tipping’s Radical Forgiveness 6 If We Have Forgiven, We Should Forget 7 Forgiving Would Be Reconciling 8 Mistaking the Person and the Action 9 Seeing Only the Personal Dimension of the Action Practical Method #3--Ho‘oponopono: The Hawaiian Approach to Forgiveness 10 Wanting to Understand Immediately What You Are Experiencing 11 Forgiveness and Arrogance 12 Asking for Forgiveness Would Induce Feeling Guilty 13 Asking for Forgiveness Would Be Humiliating Practical Method #4--The Gift of Forgiveness: Four Progressive Requests for Forgiveness 14 Forgiveness Would Be a Sign of Weakness 15 Wanting to Do Things Too QuicklyConclusion Can Everything Be Forgiven? Book SynopsisU.S. military conflicts abroad have left nine million Americans dependent on the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) for medical care. Their wounds of war are treated by the largest hospital system in the countryone that has come under fire from critics in the White House, on Capitol Hill, and in the nation''s media. In Wounds of War, Suzanne Gordon draws on five years of observational research to describe how the VHA does a better job than private sector institutions offering primary and geriatric care, mental health and home care services, and support for patients nearing the end of life. In the unusual culture of solidarity between patients and providers that the VHA has fostered, Gordon finds a working model for higher-quality health care and a much-needed alternative to the practice of for-profit medicine.Trade ReviewImportant and timely. * BeyondChron *A terrific book, and I would recommend that every veteran depending upon the VA for his or her healthcare buy it. * The Veteran *Important and timely. * CounterPunch *This book offers a unique approach to an important topic and is an essential addition for institutions with programs in medicine and other health-affiliated fields (health administration, social work, etc.), public policy and administration, political science, or for any public library serving veteran and/or military populations. * Choice *For better or worse, the course of VA health care now depends on a citizenry and health policy community that possesses little firsthand experience with its services or achievements. Wounds of War is a tremendous starting point for those interested in understanding the importance of getting these decisions right. * Washington Monthly *A compelling account of the many strengths of the Veterans Healthcare System.... Gordon documents these strengths with informative statistics as well as compelling narratives of innovative programs, commendable teamwork and exemplary clinical providers.... A valued view of a system which, even with its flaws, still has remarkable strengths to offer soldiers when their service to our nation is completed. * The Pharos *Wounds of War is a valuable resource for veterans' rights advocates as well as everyone concerned with the struggle for Medicare for all. * Against the Current *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments List of Abbreviations Introduction: What Kind of Care for Veterans? 1.

Austin Macauley Publishers FZE No Wounds Left to Sing
Book SynopsisFriends constantly asked the author for advice as though she is a relationship expert. Although she is far from it, she decided to portray the emotions numerous females experience and the discoveries that shone at the end of their tunnels through poetry and prose. The author hopes her words would offer burning wounds a soothing balm, until no wounds are left to sing. This book is a reminder for all women in search of a remedy after heartbreak to stay strong. It is a sequence of musings that could find its events unfolding in any woman's life. It is an overview from the chapters of romantic relationships and an acknowledgment of all its seasons, starting from love all the way to healing, and offering little tidbits of knowledge and insight.

How cangood leaders minimize the impact of these crises and remain open tolearn and grow from these difficult experiences? These are thequestions at the heart of the stories contained in The WoundedLeader. Through compelling stories that illustrate many of the commondilemmas faced by school leaders, the authors highlight the manypaths to healing, and show how sometimes the most painfulexperience can be an opportunity for growth. The Wounded Leader enables us tounderstand our wounds, learn from them....and begin to heal. -Roland Barth, Founder of Harvard Principals'' Center <Trade Review"...brings to the foreground several very important ideas for thepractice of school leadership..." (TCRecord.org, September 11,2002) "...A very thoughtful and consideredbook..."(The Occupational Psychologist, December2002)"Not only is the book full of fresh ideas and new insights but itis fun to read. It is not the usual leadership book that reads muchlike the other leadership books but stands out as an originalcontribution...easily presented and scholarly without beingpretentious." --Thomas J. Sergiovanni, Center for EducationalLeadership at Trinity College, San Antonio, Texas "All leaders incur wounds. The Wounded Leader enables usto understand our wounds, learn from them....and begin to heal."--Roland S. Barth, Founder of Harvard Principals' Center "An honest and much needed account of how many of us in schoolleadership roles have weathered--for good and for ill --the woundsthat go with the job. Shoving this stuff under the rug has not beenhealthy for the work of schools, and it was a great relief -- anduseful--to have this discussed so thoughtfully in this book."--Deborah Meier, Principal, Mission Hill Elementary School, Boston, and Founder of Central Park East High School, NYC "The wounds we suffer because we are human should not be sourcesof shame: they are openings to deeper self-knowledge, strongerrelationships, and gratitude for our gifts. The WoundedLeader lifts up this hard-earned insight and applies it to thedilemmas of educational leadership with creative and life-givingresults. Here is a rarity among books on education, a book withsoul, a book that will help us bring our own souls to the work wedo." --Parker J. Cornell University Press Wounds of War
1. Sounds True Inc A Healing Space: Befriending Ourselves in
Book SynopsisIs healing a matter of solving a problem, curing a sickness, or making our wounds disappear? “In my experience,” writes depth psychotherapist and mindfulness teacher Matt Licata, “true healing is not a state where we become liberated from uncomfortable feelings, but one in which we are free and flexible to welcome our complete experience - whether happy or difficult - more fully.” With A Healing Space, Dr. Licata invites us to explore a more vital sense of wellness - one that does not put us in opposition to life’s hardship, but instead welcomes all experience as part of the soul’s majestic vastness. “While there is a part of us that very genuinely wishes to heal, awaken, and transform,” writes Dr. Licata, “there is a lesser known, hidden part invested in maintaining things the way they are.” Through metaphors and teachings from diverse traditions such as alchemy, neuroscience, mindfulness, contemplative spirituality, Buddhism, and depth psychology, he illuminates the spiritual journey with profound subtlety and deep insight. If you’ve found yourself wondering why years or even decades of self-improvement, meditation, prayer, or therapy hasn’t resulted in a feeling of wholeness or completeness, you may be ready to enter A Healing Space.
